Buying a Grill Plate: Which Type Suits Your Hob, Kitchen and Food?

A grill plate can be used to prepare steaks, vegetables, sandwiches and more in the kitchen all year round. However, grill pans, cast-iron grill plates, electric grill plates and contact grills differ considerably in terms of heat source, cleaning and storage requirements. Anyone who focuses only on grill marks or a high wattage may overlook important details.

Common Pitfalls When Buying a Grill Plate

1. Grill surface and overall dimensions are confused

A specification such as 30 cm grill plate often refers only to the usable surface. Handles, housing or controls increase the actual footprint. With a plate featuring two handles, the overall width may be considerably greater than the diameter of the grill surface. Before buying, measure your worktop, cupboard space and hob size.

2. “Suitable for all hob types” does not automatically mean oven-safe

An induction grill plate must have a suitable magnetic base. Gas, ceramic and electric hobs have different requirements for the contact surface. You should also check the maximum oven temperature. A model may be suitable for induction but only suitable for limited use in the oven. Plastic handles or coatings can also restrict oven use.

3. Coating and cleaning are considered too briefly

A non-stick grill plate is generally easier to clean, but may be more sensitive to metal turners, high temperatures and abrasive sponges. Cast iron retains heat for longer, but is heavy and requires suitable care. For electric grills, removable plates, a drip tray and safe cleaning of electrical components are important.

The Most Important Buying Criteria at a Glance

Heat source: hob or mains connection

A classic grill pan or grill plate is heated directly on the hob. This saves space and is ideal for households that already have a gas, ceramic, electric or induction hob. Check the following:

  • Is the grill plate approved for your existing hob?
  • Does the base adequately cover the cooking zone being used?
  • Can the plate also be used in the oven?
  • Are the handles and coating heat-resistant?

An electric grill plate, electric grill, tabletop grill or contact grill, on the other hand, requires a mains socket. In return, these appliances often offer integrated temperature control. Models with separately adjustable heating surfaces allow more precise adjustment for different foods.

Material: aluminium, steel or cast iron

Aluminium is comparatively lightweight and heats up quickly. A coating can make it easier to remove food from the grill. With a coated grill pan, use heat-resistant plastic, wooden or silicone utensils.

A cast-iron grill plate is heavier and retains heat for a long time. This can be useful when searing larger cuts of meat, but requires careful heating and cooling. Hot cast-iron plates must not be placed directly in cold water, as sudden temperature changes can damage the material or enamel.

Size, ridges and temperature control

Ridges create visible grill marks and allow some fat to run off from the direct contact area. A smooth surface, on the other hand, is better suited to smaller ingredients, fried eggs or sandwiches. Rather than choosing the largest possible surface, focus on the right combination of portion size, storage space and heating power.

With electric appliances, the temperature control should be easy to understand. The Adler AD 3059, for example, offers a setting from 60 to 230 °C, a timer from 1 to 99 minutes and independently adjustable upper and lower plates. The Ariete 732 provides 2000 W, an integrated thermometer and adjustable temperature control. These figures describe the technical features, not automatically the result of every grilling session.

Practical Tips for Use and Care

  • Preheat a grill plate slowly, especially cast-iron models. With coated models, only use high temperatures within the limits specified by the manufacturer.
  • Place meat and vegetables on the plate as dry as possible so that the grill surface does not cool down unnecessarily.
  • Do not overload a contact grill with oversized or very moist ingredients.
  • Allow hot plates to cool completely before cleaning them.
  • Disconnect electrical appliances from the mains before cleaning. The housing, cable and plug must not come into contact with water.
  • Do not use wire wool, abrasive cleaners or metal utensils on enamel.
  • Observe the maximum connected load and use a suitable earthed socket. Extension leads or unsuitable multi-socket adaptors can increase the electrical load.

Frequently Asked Questions About Grill Plates

Which grill plate is suitable for induction?

For induction, you need a grill pan or grill plate explicitly designed for this purpose, with a magnetic base. A pure aluminium plate will not necessarily work on an induction hob. The base should also be as even as possible and suit the size of the cooking zone.

What is the correct way to clean a grill plate?

That depends on the material. Clean coated plates with warm water, mild washing-up liquid and a soft sponge. Enamelled cast iron should also be washed by hand without abrasive cleaning products. With an electric grill, removable plates and drip trays are practical; keep the main appliance dry.

Which is more economical: a grill pan or an electric grill?

There is no universally applicable answer, as heating power, preheating time, duration of use and your electricity tariff all play a role. A grill pan uses the existing hob, while an electric grill draws its power directly from the mains. When choosing, also consider portion size, temperature control, cleaning effort and the kitchen equipment you already have.
