Buying hoodies: how to compare fit, material and features properly

A hoodie should feel comfortable for everyday wear, be easy to style and keep its shape even after several washes. However, product images and terms such as “extra soft”, “heavy” or “oversized” often suggest more than they actually deliver. If you buy hoodies online, it is therefore worth checking certain details more closely.

Common hoodie-buying misconceptions

1. “Oversized” is confused with simply choosing a larger standard size

An oversized hoodie usually has deliberately dropped shoulders, more room through the body and sometimes longer or more voluminous sleeves. Simply ordering one size larger, on the other hand, does not always create the desired silhouette. The shoulders may become too wide, while the length remains impractical. The key factors are the size chart, chest measurement and stated cut.

2. A high cotton content alone says little about comfort

Cotton can feel pleasant against the skin, but weight, weave and the inside surface also affect how a garment feels and wears. A cotton hoodie made from 460 g/m² heavyweight terry fabric will drape differently from a lightweight sweatshirt fabric. Polyester content can help with shape retention and ease of care. The material composition should therefore always be considered alongside the fabric weight.

3. “Warm” does not automatically mean suitable for every situation

A fleece hoodie with a brushed inside can be suitable for cooler days, but may feel too bulky under a close-fitting jacket. A lighter sweatshirt with a hood is easier to wear as part of a layered outfit. A heavyweight hoodie is not automatically the right choice for sport or longer journeys in heated indoor spaces.

The most important buying criteria

Fabric weight and material

Fabric weight is often given in g/m². A value of 300 g/m² typically indicates a medium-weight sweatshirt fabric, while 460 g/m² is considerably heavier. This provides an objective indication of the amount of material and how the garment will drape, but it is not in itself proof of quality.

Also pay attention to the composition:

  • 100% cotton: natural fibre, often soft and breathable; check the care instructions to help maintain its shape.
  • Cotton-polyester blend: can combine durability with easy care.
  • Polyester: usually dries easily and is often used for sportier-cut styles.
  • Fleece inside: brushed surface for a soft feel, often found in transitional-season and winter styles.

Cut and measurements

For a women’s hoodie, options include cropped, regular and oversized cuts. A cropped hoodie finishes higher on the body and can be styled with high-waisted trousers or skirts. A classic men’s hoodie is often a regular length with a straight or relaxed cut.

Before buying, check:

  1. Chest measurement and, where applicable, waist and hip measurements.
  2. Sleeve length and overall length.
  3. Shoulder shape, such as dropped shoulders or raglan sleeves.
  4. Whether the size chart uses EU, brand-specific or international sizing.

For children, height is generally more informative than age. A children’s hoodie should not feel tight around the neck or sleeves, nor be so large that it restricts freedom of movement.

Features and care

A hood with a drawstring allows for a personalised fit. Kangaroo pockets provide space for smaller items and keep your hands warm, while a zip hoodie can be opened or closed more flexibly. Ribbed cuffs can help keep the sleeves and hem securely in place.

Care instructions vary considerably. Several of the models listed below are suitable for washing at 30°C. Depending on the material, tumble drying, bleach and high ironing temperatures may not be recommended. The manufacturer’s instructions on the care label always take precedence.

Frequently asked questions about hoodies

How should a hoodie fit?

That depends on the style you want. A regular-fit hoodie usually finishes around hip height and works well under a jacket. An oversized cut is designed with dropped shoulders and more room through the body. Always compare the measurement chart for the specific model with a well-fitting garment from your own wardrobe.

How long does a hoodie last?

There is no single answer that applies to every hoodie. Its lifespan depends on the fabric weight, construction, how often it is washed, friction and drying. Gentle wash cycles, low temperatures and following the care label can help protect the fabric structure. High heat and frequent tumble drying put many sweatshirt fabrics under greater strain.

How much does a good hoodie cost?

The price depends on factors including the material, fabric weight, brand, cut and features. An adidas hoodie may differ through its brand and design details, while an Urban Classics hoodie is available in various fabric weights and fits. For comparison, specific details such as material content, g/m², hood construction and care instructions are more meaningful than general marketing claims.
