Buying hoodies: choosing cuts, materials and styles to suit your everyday life

A hoodie should feel comfortable, be easy to combine and provide the right level of warmth for how you plan to wear it. In practice, unclear sizing, misleading material claims or an unsuitable cut can quickly lead to a disappointing purchase. This applies equally to a women’s hoodie, a men’s hoodie and a children’s hoodie.

Common hoodie buying traps

1. Material details without considering the weight

“Cotton” alone does not tell you how warm or shape-retaining a hoodie will be. The material blend, fabric construction and weight in grams per square metre are also important. A cotton hoodie weighing 300 g/m² should be assessed differently from a model weighing 460 g/m². The inside makes a difference too: fleece can feel warmer, while unlined sweatshirt fabric is often lighter to wear.

2. Oversized does not always mean the same thing

An oversized hoodie typically has a looser fit and often dropped shoulders. With thicker fabrics, this can create additional volume. If you fall between two sizes, you should therefore not automatically choose the larger size. Measurement charts showing chest, waist, hip and sleeve lengths are more useful than general descriptions such as “loose” or “relaxed”.

A cropped hoodie also has a shorter length. For example, the Urban Classics Ladies Oversized Cropped Hoody has a short cut, an open hem and is made from 80% cotton and 20% polyester at 300 g/m². It is therefore better suited to short layering combinations than to maximum coverage.

3. Care instructions are often underestimated

High washing temperatures, bleaching or tumble-drying at high heat can affect the material and fit. Some hoodies are designed to be air-dried, while others can be tumble-dried at a low temperature. Before buying, it is worth checking the care label and product description. This helps prevent a sophisticated cut or soft fleece lining from losing its shape more quickly due to unsuitable care.

Parameters to compare before buying

Fabric, weight and warmth

For warm hoodies, fabric weight and inner construction are particularly important. Depending on the version, the Urban Classics Ultra Heavy Hoody is made from 100% cotton and 460 g/m² terry fabric. This weight indicates a dense, heavy fabric, but it may also feel warmer and less lightweight.

The Urban Classics Basic Essential Hoody uses a cotton-polyester blend of 60% cotton and 40% polyester at 300 g/m². Its soft fleece lining is designed for cooler days. A fleece hoodie is therefore better suited as an additional warm layer, while a lightweight sweatshirt hoodie can be worn more comfortably under a jacket.

Fit and freedom of movement

Pay attention to the combination of cut and intended use:

  • Regular fit: a balanced silhouette for everyday wear, offices with a relaxed dress code and layering.
  • Oversized fit: more room, often with dropped shoulders; ideal for streetwear and relaxed outfits.
  • Cropped fit: shorter length; useful when worn with high-waisted trousers or skirts.
  • Zip hoodie: a full-length zip for wearing open and for easier dressing and undressing.
  • Raglan sleeves: diagonally attached sleeves can support freedom of movement.

A hoodie for sporting activities should not be chosen based on the logo alone. The material, ease of movement, pocket design and care requirements are at least as important for everyday use.

Features and size comparison

A hood with a drawstring allows you to adjust the fit individually. Kangaroo pockets provide space for small items and can keep your hands warm. Ribbed cuffs on the sleeves and hem help the hoodie retain its shape on the body.

Compare your own measurements with the brand’s size chart. For children’s clothing, height is particularly helpful. For example, the LEGO Kidswear Hoodie Dark Navy is broken down into sizes from 50/56 to 158/164, with details of height and chest circumference. This makes choosing a children’s hoodie easier, but it does not replace checking the actual measurements.

Hoodie FAQs

How should a hoodie fit?

That depends on the style you want. A regular fit sits relatively close to the body and is suitable for layering under jackets. An oversized hoodie has more room through the chest and shoulders. Before buying, check the measurement chart for the model and compare it with a garment you already own.

How warm is a fleece hoodie?

Warmth depends not only on the term “fleece”, but also on the fabric weight, material thickness, inner construction and fit. A brushed lining can feel warmer. For a realistic assessment, you should check the material and fabric-weight details.

What is the correct way to wash hoodies?

Always follow the care label. In many cases, washing at 30 °C with a mild detergent and similar colours is recommended. For delicate or heavy models, air-drying is advisable, while some items can be tumble-dried at a low temperature. Bleaching and hot ironing should only be used if the label expressly permits them.
