Who are the different options suitable for?

Organisers of a one-off appearance

If you’re planning a supervised humanoid demonstration for a specific date, but don’t want to build your own robotics team, make sure the hire agreement clearly sets out the operator, technical support and installation arrangements.

Teams planning repeat performances

Buying or leasing may work well if you have several appearances planned and your own team can take care of operation, transport, content and safe use. Check, too, whether the model variant you choose allows the modifications you need.

Organisers of information stands

If visitors mainly need information or touchscreen interaction, it’s worth comparing a display or kiosk. Humanoid movement isn’t necessarily required for this.

What should you consider when choosing?

First decide whether this is a one-off or recurring appearance, and whether humanoid movement is genuinely part of the visitor experience. Then make sure the service, interaction and venue arrangements suit your planned set-up.

Hire with an operator

Suitable if: you’re planning a one-off trade show or performance and don’t want to build your own operations team.

Consider: The date, model, set-up, travel, branding and support must all be clearly specified in the quote.

Buy or lease

Suitable if: you have several appearances planned and your own team can organise ongoing operation.

Consider: You’ll need to plan for operation, transport and servicing yourself. Unitree Robotics states that the standard G1 does not support secondary development.

Display or interactive kiosk

Suitable if: visitors mainly need to access content or use a touchscreen.

Consider: A display won’t create the same physical presence or movement-led spectacle as a humanoid robot.

Consideration What to check before buying Who should consider this?
Support and safety For a supervised hire, agree on a trained operator and technical support for the entire event, and check the movement area and organiser requirements. If I need to know who is responsible for operating the robot and how visitors will be kept safe, this is my main priority. Around 33% of consumers put support and safe operation first. For LimX Luna, the manufacturer’s manual prohibits operation in crowds and requires a distance of at least 1 m; Messe Frankfurt highlights visitor safety and may require a risk assessment.
Interaction and content Confirm that the demonstration, controls and scope for changes are suitable for the specific model and variant. If a particular conversation, gesture or performance sequence is central to the appearance, I need to know whether the model can deliver it. Around 27% of consumers prioritise their preferred interaction and demonstration content. Unitree Robotics notes that the standard G1 does not support secondary development.
Total costs Compare quotes for the same period and scope of service, including the operator, logistics, set-up, programming, branding and servicing. If I have several events coming up, I want to compare hiring with owning the robot over the same period and on a like-for-like basis. Around 20% of consumers prioritise this total-cost comparison.
Venue and visitor data Check transport routes, power and charging arrangements, and visitor flow. If recordings will actually be made, clarify their purpose and the legal basis for making them. If my stand has to meet technical requirements or is expected to process image, audio or interaction data, I need to address this early in the planning. Around 20% of consumers prioritise venue requirements and the handling of visitor data. LimX Dynamics’ stated Luna runtime of around 4 hours is based on laboratory measurements and is not a guarantee for event use.

Common mistakes when choosing

  • Comparing the device price directly with supervised hire

A hire quote and a purchase price may include different services. Unless the scope is the same, the comparison won’t be meaningful.

Ask for quotes covering the same event dates, with the operator, support, travel, set-up, branding and any bespoke programming itemised separately.

If you buy or lease, you’ll need to plan for operation, transport, maintenance and content yourself. With hire, additional services can be agreed separately.

  • Assuming the robot’s dimensions are the space visitors will need

The robot’s external dimensions don’t tell you how it can operate safely among visitors, stand staff and walkways. The LimX Luna manual sets out specific restrictions on operating in crowds and minimum distances.

Check the movement sequence, visitor flow and venue requirements for the model that will actually be used. Messe Frankfurt lists visitor safety as a requirement for exhibits and machinery.

A designated movement area may mean adapting your stand layout.

  • Choosing a humanoid when information is all you need

If visitors mainly need to access content, humanoid movement isn’t necessarily required. Samsung Business Deutschland describes displays and interactive kiosks for information and touchscreen applications.

Start by defining what you want visitors to do at your stand. Then compare a display or kiosk with a humanoid if its physical presence is part of your goal.

A guide to relevant brands

LimX Dynamics

The manufacturer positions Luna for commercial demonstrations, including trade show appearances. This makes it a potential starting point for a clearly defined performance concept, not a blanket approval for every venue.

  • LimX Dynamics’ data sheet gives the dimensions as 160 cm and the weight as 56 kg with the battery, microphone and speaker. The stated runtime of around 4 hours was measured in the manufacturer’s laboratory.
  • The manufacturer’s manual prohibits operation in crowds and requires a distance of at least 1 m between people and the device. Plan your event accordingly.

Unitree

The G1 is offered as a humanoid demonstration platform, while EF Robotics describes event hire featuring Unitree robots. This does not mean one will be available for a specific date.

  • For repeat demonstrations, you can choose a model variant to suit the intended use and any modifications you need.
  • Unitree Robotics states that the standard G1 does not support secondary development. If you need modifications, ask about the EDU variant.

MagicLab

MagicLab also presents the MagicBot Z1 for exhibitions and cultural tourism. It could be relevant to a technically prepared performance concept.

  • The manufacturer’s website distinguishes between the standard and development versions.
  • The manufacturer’s stated weight of around 40 kg with the battery applies to the Z1. On its own, this doesn’t tell you whether it’s suitable for a particular stand, or whether German event support or supervision is available.

Samsung

Samsung Business Deutschland describes displays and interactive kiosks for information and touchscreen applications. This product range is an alternative to consider when content or usability matters more than humanoid movement.

  • A display or kiosk can be considered for information access and touchscreen interaction.
  • The product range description doesn’t establish whether a particular display will suit your specific stand or create the same impact as a humanoid robot.

Frequently asked questions

Can a moving robot be used freely at any trade show stand in Germany?

No, you can’t assume that approval applies at every venue. Messe Frankfurt, for example, requires visitor safety to be considered for exhibits and machinery, and may require a risk assessment or prohibit operation. Check the rules at the venue you’ve actually booked and review your planned set-up.

How should I plan for breaks and emergencies when using a humanoid robot?

Ask about the specific model’s runtime, charging or battery replacement, responsibilities and how to pause the demonstration. LimX Dynamics states that Luna runs for around 4 hours under laboratory conditions and describes a hardware emergency stop; this doesn’t guarantee the same runtime at an event. The Luna manual also prohibits operation in crowds.

Are the operator, transport and branding included in the daily hire price?

That depends on the agreed hire package. Compare suppliers’ quotes using an itemised list of services in writing. For a supervised hire, the trained operator and technical support during the event must be explicitly included in the agreement.

Can the robot film visitors or record conversations?

Not simply because the device has a camera or microphone. If personal image, audio or interaction data will be processed during your event, you need to check the purpose, appropriate legal basis and information obligations. If consent is used as the legal basis, the Data Protection Conference says it must be freely given, informed and unambiguous; this does not amount to blanket permission or a general prohibition.
