Which requirements determine the right platform?
First decide what exercises or development work the robot needs to support. Then check that the software access, operating arrangements and documentation all match the exact version being offered.
Compact programming kit
A good fit if: learners in supervised introductory classes will be programming movements with Scratch, Python or Arduino, as OpenELAB describes for the Hiwonder Tonybot.
Trade-off: For ROS-based research, you will need to check that the specific platform provides the software access you need.
Small ROS research platform
A good fit if: working with ROS packages and robot-specific software modules is itself a learning objective; ROBOTIS documents these options for OP3.
Trade-off: Setup requires compatible software versions and network access. Check availability and service arrangements for the specific product being considered.
Mobile EDU development platform
A good fit if: a group wants to bring movement, perception and interaction projects together on a mobile platform; RBTX describes relevant interfaces for Unitree G1 EDU options.
Trade-off: Transport, a clear test area, supervised use and charging breaks all need to be factored into the project plan.

What to check before buying |
Who it matters to |
| Development access |
Check the supported ROS version and installation process; confirm the SDK or API for the version being offered. |
If I want to develop my own movement and interaction software, my team needs a software setup it can install repeatedly. For around 36% of consumers, this development access would be the top priority. |
| Supervision and documentation |
Check the EU requirements that apply to the specific configuration, along with conformity and safety documentation and battery instructions. |
With different groups of learners, I need to arrange the test area, supervision and safe charging before use. Around 29% of consumers would put these operating and documentation checks first. |
| Transport and service |
Check the weight and route to the test area; confirm the contents, charging breaks and arrangements for spare parts or support in writing. |
If the robot has to move between rooms and class groups, transport or missing parts must not disrupt the schedule. For around 21% of consumers, practical planning for use would take priority. |
| Getting started with programming |
Check that the tools and example exercises suit the planned course; find out which upgrades the version supports. |
For introductory movement exercises, I want learners to be able to follow their programmes on a manageable setup. Around 14% of consumers would prioritise this accessible starting point. |

Frequently asked questions about choosing
Is a CE mark on the product page enough for procurement?
No. The mark alone does not replace checks on the specific configuration. The European Union explains that, for products covered by relevant EU rules, you need to identify the applicable requirements and prepare technical evidence. Make sure the model, contents, relevant EU declaration of conformity and safety instructions match the actual offer.
How should a teaching team organise battery charging?
Follow the instructions for the battery and robot in the selected version. For the LB-012 LiPo battery, ROBOTIS says not to charge it while connected to the robot, not to use the robot while charging and not to use damaged batteries. Do not assume these instructions apply to other models.
Can you plan a fixed class length per charge with a Unitree G1 EDU?
No. A stated maximum running time is not a guaranteed class length. RBTX lists up to about two hours for G1 EDU options, but the usable time depends on factors including the version being offered and how it is used. Plan class activities and charging breaks together, and confirm which battery and charger are included.
Is a ROS-compatible platform ready for teaching without any further setup?
No. ROS compatibility also requires suitable software versions, installation and robot-specific packages. ROBOTIS documents these steps and network access for OP3. For a Unitree G1 EDU version, ask for confirmation of the supported software setup, SDK or API access and a suitable example project for your course.
