Indoor Toys for Active Children: A Guide to Choosing Safe Movement Toys at Home

When children have lots of energy indoors, suitable indoor toys for active children can be a practical addition to family life. However, products such as climbing equipment, foam building blocks, baby play gyms and electronic activity toys vary considerably in terms of recommended age, space requirements, cleaning and safety requirements.

Parents should therefore not be guided solely by large product images or terms such as “XXL”, “Montessori” or “multifunctional”. What matters is whether the toy is suitable for the child’s age, the available living space and the intended use.

Three common pitfalls when buying movement toys

1. “Multifunctional” does not automatically mean suitable

A product with lots of play options may be appealing, but it often requires more space, batteries or assembly time. An electronic football goal with basketball and target-throw functions, for example, is intended for a different age group than a baby play gym or a soft climbing set.

Before buying, check the following:

  • Which play functions will actually be used?
  • Is the product designed for indoor use, outdoor use or both?
  • Are batteries, additional balls or accessories required separately?

2. Age recommendations are interpreted too generously

The recommendation “from 24 months” should not automatically be treated as suitable for every situation. With climbing toys for children, it is particularly important to check whether direct supervision, a soft surface or use by only one child at a time is required.

Safety warnings may specify a stricter limit than the product description. For example, use of the roba indoor climbing frame by children under 36 months is excluded. The manufacturer’s instructions and the specific user manual are decisive.

3. Care and stability are underestimated

Foam climbing blocks and XXL soft building blocks may appear easy to care for if their covers are removable and machine washable. If this information is not provided, stains and daily use can quickly become a practical problem.

For wooden products, parents should check the following:

  • Is the climbing triangle positioned on a level, stable surface?
  • Can screws, ropes and connections be checked regularly?
  • Is a gym mat or additional wall fastening recommended?
  • Is the maximum load suitable for the intended use?

Important parameters to check before buying

Age, supervision and maximum load

With toys from 2 years, warnings about small parts, falls and tipping hazards are particularly important. A Pikler triangle or wooden climbing triangle should only be used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. According to the product information, the roba models are described as suitable from 24 months, but they also include a warning stating that they should be used from 36 months.

The maximum load is not, on its own, proof of safety. The roba indoor play gym is specified for loads of up to 70 kg, while the roba climbing triangle supports up to 50 kg. Nevertheless, the product should only be used on a suitable surface and under direct supervision. Dynamic movements, rocking and climbing place different demands on a structure than sitting quietly.

Materials and safety information

For soft building blocks, high-density foam, a durable cover, non-slip undersides and concealed zips are useful features to check. The BanaSuper sets are described as having covers made from skin-friendly fabric, hook-and-loop fasteners and removable, machine-washable covers.

Several BanaSuper products specify the standards EN71-1, EN71-2 and EN71-3, as well as Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC. EN 71-1 covers mechanical and physical properties, among other things; EN 71-2 covers flammability; and EN 71-3 covers the migration of certain elements. Stating a standard does not replace checking the product before every use or following the instructions.

Dimensions, surface and cleaning

Measure the intended area, including the movement zone. An indoor climbing frame with a height of 127.5 cm needs to be positioned away from windows, radiators, stairs and furniture. For wooden climbing equipment, a soft mat or carpet is advisable, provided this is compatible with the instructions.

Electronic toys require different care from wooden or foam motor-skills toys. With the Chicco Multisport League, electronic components must not be immersed in water; a soft, slightly damp cloth is recommended. With RC off-road cars, you also need to consider the battery, charger, remote-control batteries and whether the vehicle is being used on wet surfaces.

Frequently asked questions about indoor toys for active children

Which indoor toys are suitable for small flats?

Soft building blocks and a compact Pikler triangle can usually be set up more flexibly than a fixed indoor climbing frame. Nevertheless, check the overall dimensions and clear the necessary fall and movement area. After playtime, smaller sets should be stored somewhere dry and out of the way to prevent trips.

How long does foam climbing equipment last?

Its lifespan depends on the foam density, cover, level of use and care. Removable, machine-washable covers make regular cleaning easier. Check the seams, hook-and-loop fasteners, zips and the foam’s shape retention. Damaged parts should no longer be used.

Does electronic movement play equipment involve ongoing costs?

Products such as an electronic football goal may require batteries or replacement batteries. An RC off-road car also needs its battery to be charged, while the remote control may require AA batteries. Before buying, parents should therefore compare the contents, charging time, availability of spare parts and suitable surfaces for use.
