Buy an Intex air bed: choose a model by size, pump and intended use

An Intex air bed can be used as a guest bed, a place to sleep in a holiday home or a temporary solution at home. A suitable Intex air mattress is also practical for festivals and camping. However, product names such as “Deluxe”, “Prestige” or “Comfort” do not automatically guarantee the right choice. The key factors are the technical specifications, power supply and intended use.

Common pitfalls when buying an Intex air bed

1. The pump is not suitable for the intended location

An air bed with an integrated pump is quick to set up, but depending on the model it requires a power source:

  • 220–240-volt pump: suitable for living spaces, holiday flats or campsites with an electrical hook-up.
  • USB pump: can be used flexibly with a USB adapter, laptop or power bank. The power source should provide the output required by the manufacturer.
  • Foot or hand pump: independent of mains sockets and power banks, but requires physical effort.

An air bed with a USB pump is therefore not automatically suitable for every campsite. Before buying, make sure you have a power bank with a suitable USB output.

2. The sleeping area is underestimated

The term “two-person air bed” says little about the actual amount of space available. A model measuring 203 × 152 cm offers different freedom of movement from a bed measuring 191 × 137 cm. For two adults, both the layout of the space and the available floor area are important.

For a single-person air bed, 99 × 191 cm are typical dimensions. A two-person air bed, on the other hand, requires sufficient space in the room, tent or motorhome. You should also leave a few centimetres of clearance around the bed so that the valve and cable remain accessible.

3. Height and weight capacity are overlooked

An elevated air bed measuring 42 or 46 cm makes getting in and out easier. However, it requires more storage space and is heavier than a lower model. The maximum weight capacity must match how you intend to use it. For the double models mentioned here, it is up to 272 kg, depending on the product, while single models support up to 136 kg.

The weight limit is not a guideline for permanent overloading. Jumping, bouncing or standing on the bed can put additional strain on the seams and construction.

Important technical criteria when buying

Size, number of people and space planning

Before ordering, compare the length, width and height with the intended space. For guests at home, 152 × 203 cm is a comfortable size for a double model. For one person, a twin format measuring 99 × 191 cm may be easier to transport and store.

For an air mattress for camping, packed size, weight and the ground surface are also important. PVC surfaces should not be placed directly on stones, branches or rough ground. A groundsheet or suitable underlay reduces the risk of damage, but does not replace checking for sharp objects.

Construction and surface

Many models in the Dura-Beam range use Fiber-Tech technology. According to the product description, the construction consists of numerous polyester fibres designed to support shape retention. This is a technical construction detail, not a guarantee of unlimited service life.

A flocked top feels less smooth and can help reduce bedding slipping. The sides and underside of the models mentioned are made from PVC or vinyl. The material must be completely dry before storage.

Pump type and inflation time

The stated inflation time depends on the power source, surroundings and desired firmness. It should therefore not be treated as an exact real-world figure.

  • Integrated 220-volt pumps inflate several models in approximately three to four minutes.
  • USB pumps offer a flexible power supply, but can take approximately seven minutes with some double models.
  • An integrated foot pump does not require a socket and is suitable for mobile use.

Do not over-inflate the bed. The recommended firmness is achieved by inflating it carefully, not by applying maximum pressure.

Intex air bed FAQ

How long does it take to inflate an Intex air bed?

Depending on the model and pump type, approximately three to seven minutes. An integrated 220-volt pump is specified as taking around three to four minutes on several double models. USB models may take longer. The actual time also depends on the power source and the desired firmness.

How long does an Intex air bed last?

It is not possible to give a reliable general service life. It depends on frequency of use, the ground surface, load, storage and care. Using a suitable underlay, observing the maximum weight capacity and storing the bed in a dry place can help reduce unnecessary material wear. Before every use, check the surface, valves, cable and seams.

Does an integrated pump use a lot of electricity?

Running costs depend on the pump’s power consumption, operating time and electricity tariff. As the pump usually runs for only a few minutes to inflate or deflate the bed, consumption per use is limited. With USB models, it depends on the power bank or power source used. For occasional use, electricity costs are generally less important than choosing the right pump and a suitable ground surface.
