Choosing an INTEX air bed: sizes, pumps and models to suit your needs

An INTEX air bed can be used as a guest bed, travel mattress or portable sleeping solution. However, your choice should not be based solely on price, height or the product photo. The key factors are the actual dimensions, the pump’s power supply, the maximum load capacity and where you plan to use it.

Common pitfalls when buying an INTEX air bed

1. The stated size does not fit the available space

A double air bed measuring 152 × 203 cm requires considerably more floor space than a single air bed measuring 99 × 191 cm. You should also leave some room to move around the bed. For small guest rooms, tents or festival accommodation, a more compact format may be more practical.

Height also affects how the bed can be used. A high air bed measuring 42 or 46 cm makes getting in and out easier, but requires more storage space and can be problematic in low tents.

2. ‘Integrated pump’ does not always mean the same power supply

An air bed with an integrated pump can either run from a standard household mains supply of 220–240 V or via USB. An electric air bed for indoor use can be conveniently inflated from a mains socket. For camping or festivals, however, a model with a USB pump is more flexible, as a power bank can be used as the power source.

Before buying, you should therefore check:

  • Is a 220–240-V socket available where you plan to use it?
  • Does the pump require a separate power bank or USB power adapter?
  • Is there an alternative connection for a hand or foot pump?
  • How is the air bed deflated and transported?

3. Load capacity and sleeping area are often overlooked

The maximum load capacity applies to the combined weight of the users. With a double air bed rated for up to 272 kg, there is theoretically sufficient capacity for two people. Nevertheless, you should not exceed the manufacturer’s stated limit. With a single model rated for 136 kg, the available margin should be assessed accordingly.

A soft flocked surface can make the bed more comfortable to lie on. However, it cannot replace the right size or a sturdy construction. For regular use, a robust underside, careful storage and a repair patch are also important.

Which technical parameters matter?

Dimensions, height and number of people

For one person, a width of around 76 to 99 cm is often sufficient. The compact model measuring 76 × 191 × 25 cm is suitable for portable use, while 99 × 191 cm provides more room at the sides. Couples generally need a width of at least 137 cm; 152 × 203 cm offers a more generous double sleeping area.

Height can be broadly classified as follows:

  • 25 cm: more compact, easier to store and suitable for camping
  • 30 to 33 cm: a balanced compromise between comfort and portability
  • 42 to 46 cm: raised guest bed with easier access, particularly suitable for indoor spaces

Construction and material

The Fiber-Tech technology featured in several models is described in the product specifications as being based on numerous polyester fibres within the air bed’s construction. Combined with a Wave-Beam structure, this is intended to create a more dimensionally stable sleeping surface. When making your choice, the name itself matters less than the combination of material, maximum load capacity, height and construction.

Most of the models mentioned use PVC or vinyl. The upper surface is partly softly flocked, while the sides and underside are made from hard-wearing vinyl. Even so, sharp objects, rough floors and pets’ claws can cause damage.

Pump type and inflation time

An integrated electric pump saves you from having to buy a separate inflator. Depending on the model, an inflation time of approximately three to four minutes is stated. This is a guideline and depends, among other things, on the firmness you want and the available power supply.

A model with a 2-in-1 valve and hand pump can be useful for portable use when there is no mains socket or power bank available. Before using the air bed for the first time, inflate it only to a comfortable firmness. Excessive pressure can put strain on the seams and material.

Setting up, caring for and storing your air bed

An inflatable guest bed should be placed on a level, clean surface. Before inflating it, remove stones, twigs, edges and other sharp objects. In a tent, a suitable groundsheet can provide additional protection. The air bed should not be used near open flames, heat sources or cigarettes.

After use, we recommend following these steps:

  1. Release all the air and remove any remaining moisture.
  2. Clean the surface with a slightly damp cloth.
  3. Allow the material to dry completely.
  4. Check the valve and surface for damage.
  5. Fold the air bed loosely and store it somewhere dry and cool, protected from direct sunlight.

It is not possible to specify a general service life. Frequent inflation and deflation, heavy loads, heat and incorrect storage can place greater strain on the material. A repair patch is useful for minor damage, but it cannot replace proper use.

INTEX air bed FAQ

How long does it take to inflate an INTEX air bed?

Depending on the model and pump type, the product specifications state that inflation takes approximately three to six minutes. An integrated electric pump must be connected to a suitable power source. The actual time may depend on the firmness you want and the available power supply.

Is an INTEX air bed suitable for camping?

Compact models measuring 25 or 30 cm in height can be suitable for camping and festivals. However, an electric air bed with a 220–240-V pump requires a mains socket. A model with a USB pump can be operated using a compatible power bank. The tent floor must be free from sharp objects.

Does an air bed lose air overnight?

A certain loss of pressure can occur due to temperature changes and the material stretching. Some models may need to be topped up after their first use. If the sleeping surface sinks noticeably, check the valve, seams and surface for possible damage.
