Buying an Intex air bed: choose the right size, pump type and model

An Intex air bed can serve as a space-saving guest bed, an inflatable mattress for camping or a flexible sleeping surface when travelling. At first, choosing one seems simple: compare the size, colour and price, then order the model. In practice, however, several common assumptions when buying can lead to disappointment.

Common pitfalls when buying an inflatable mattress

1. Confusing the overall dimensions with the sleeping surface

An air bed measuring 191 × 99 cm also needs space for the valve, edges and room to move around. In small guest rooms or tents, you should therefore check not only the product dimensions but also the available floor space. Models around 137 to 152 cm wide are designed for two people. An air bed for one person, on the other hand, is usually narrower and easier to transport.

2. An integrated pump is not always automatically suitable

An air bed with pump can make preparation easier, but it needs a suitable power source. An electric air bed with 220–240 V is designed for indoor use with a mains socket. An air bed with USB pump, on the other hand, can be operated using a suitable power bank, laptop or USB power adapter. When camping without access to electricity, an air bed with foot pump or manual pump offers greater flexibility.

3. Load capacity and set-up requirements are underestimated

The stated maximum load is a technical limit, not a guideline for jumping, vigorous rocking or use by more people than intended. The surface underneath is equally important: stones, twigs, sharp edges or animal claws can damage PVC. A protective blanket under the bed will not eliminate every risk, but it does create an additional layer between the surface and the ground.

The most important buying criteria for an Intex air bed

Size and sleeping capacity

Single-person dimensions range from 76 × 191 cm to 99 × 191 cm. The narrower cot-size version saves space, while a Twin model provides more room to move. Depending on the design, an air bed for two people may measure 137 × 191 cm or 152 × 203 cm, for example. Also consider the length: for taller people, a length of 203 cm may be more suitable than 191 cm.

The height affects how easy the bed is to get into and its packed size. Models measuring 25 cm high remain relatively compact. A height of 30 cm offers a medium-height option. A 42 or 46 cm high inflatable guest bed is easier to get into, but requires more storage space and may be heavier to transport.

Construction and surface

Many Intex models use a Fiber-Tech construction. Polyester fibres stabilise the internal structure. The Dura-Beam series combines this structure with a wave-shaped sleeping surface. These details describe the construction; they do not replace checking the maximum load or product dimensions.

A flocked top feels similar to fabric and can help prevent a sheet from slipping. The sides and underside are often made from vinyl or PVC. Before storing the bed, make sure the surface is completely dry, as moisture can affect both the material and the storage environment.

Pump type and deflation

  • USB pump: Practical when travelling, provided a compatible 5-volt power source is available. For the Queen model, a USB-A source with at least 2 A is specified.
  • 220–240 V electric pump: Suitable for homes or campsites with access to mains electricity. Water and electrical connections must be kept apart.
  • Integrated foot pump: Works without a socket and without a separate pump. It requires physical effort, but is an interesting option for festivals or simple camping set-ups.
  • 2-in-1 valve: Some models require a separate hand or foot pump. The extra-wide valve can make inflation and deflation easier.

Do not overinflate the bed. The ideal firmness depends on personal preference and intended use; the information in the relevant product instructions remains the key reference.

Set-up, care and storage

Place the air bed on a flat, clean surface and remove any sharp objects. Inflate it only to the desired firmness. After use, allow all the air to escape before rolling the bed up. Wipe the surface with a damp cloth and mild soap. The material must be dry before storage. Avoid direct sunlight, high temperatures, naked flames and moisture.

The material may settle slightly during initial use. This is possible with inflatable products and does not automatically indicate a defect. First check the valve, surface and folded areas for visible damage. Repairs should only be carried out in accordance with the enclosed instructions.

FAQ about Intex air beds

How long does inflation take?

This depends on the model, size and pump. The products featured take approximately three to seven minutes. A USB pump requires a suitable power source, while a foot pump works independently of the mains.

How long does an Intex air bed last?

There is no universally applicable lifespan. It depends on the load, ground conditions, storage and handling. Storing the bed clean and dry, observing the maximum load and protecting it from sharp objects can help extend its service life.

Does an electric air bed use a lot of electricity?

The actual cost depends on the power rating, operating time and electricity tariff. As the pump usually runs for only a few minutes when inflating and deflating, consumption for this process is limited. For USB models, the performance data of the power bank or power adapter used also applies.
