LED ambient lighting can highlight a particular area, complement your TV setup or provide a subtle night light. However, there are clear differences between RGB lighting, smart LED lighting, LED strips and portable mood lights. If you focus only on the number of colours or a particularly low price, you could overlook important details about power, installation and controls.
This buying guide explains what to look for before you buy and which types of product suit different needs.
App control, voice control and music synchronisation are often heavily promoted. What matters, though, is whether the light works with your smartphone or smart home system. Some models only work via Bluetooth, while others need Wi-Fi or a specific app. It’s also worth checking compatibility with Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home or Matter before you buy.
RGB lighting creates colourful accents, but it doesn’t automatically replace practical room lighting. If you’re buying an LED strip for your TV or desk, it’s also important to check whether the light is directly visible or shines indirectly against a wall. Warm white, neutral white or cool white modes may also be useful in a bedroom or home office.
Adhesive strips won’t stick to every wall, the cable may not reach the socket, and some light strips can’t be cut to size. If you’re choosing a battery-powered product, factor in battery life and the availability of replacements. For your car, you’ll need to make sure the operating voltage, installation location and cable routing are suitable for the vehicle’s electrical system.
For portable mood lights, USB-C, USB or a built-in rechargeable battery can be convenient. A USB light, for example, can be powered by a computer, power bank or USB mains adapter. Check whether a mains adapter is included. According to the product description, the Aigostar LED table and floor lamp comes with a USB cable; the adapter isn’t included.
In your car, check the stated operating voltage. Products rated at 12 V or within a range of 10 to 16 V aren’t automatically suitable for every type of installation. Install the product according to the instructions, taking care not to interfere with airbags, pedals or your field of vision.
Colour temperature is measured in kelvins. 2700 K gives a warm light, while 6500 K is a cooler white. According to the manufacturer, the Aigostar lamp has a colour temperature range of 2700 to 6500 K and a luminous flux of 105 lm at 1 W. It’s designed for accent lighting and bedside use, rather than as the sole source of light in a large room.
RGBIC products can display several colours at once. This can be useful for gaming lighting or a TV setup. For focused work, though, you should also plan for a separate task light with sufficient brightness.
An IP rating such as IP44 means protection against solid objects 1 mm or larger and splashes of water from different directions. It doesn’t mean the product is fully waterproof. According to its product description, the M.TK Hanging LED Starburst Light has an IP44 rating and can be used for decorative indoor and outdoor settings. However, it must not be submerged in water.
Indoor products are suitable for bedrooms, living rooms and home offices. For a balcony, patio or garden, check the stated IP rating and make sure the product is approved for outdoor use.

Power consumption depends on the wattage, how long the light is on and its brightness. A 1 W light uses around 0.01 kWh over ten hours. LED strips with a higher total wattage use more accordingly. The wattage shown on the product page can help you estimate consumption.
It’s generally intended for decorative lighting, accents or use as a night light. For working, cooking or other activities that need brighter lighting, you’ll need a separate, suitable room light or task light.
Its lifespan depends on factors including how long it’s used, heat build-up, the power supply and physical wear. Avoid sharp bends, moisture and power sources that aren’t designed for the product. Also check whether the LED light source can be replaced or whether the entire light needs replacing if it develops a fault.
