LED candles combine decorative LED candlelight with an alternative to an open flame. Depending on the design, they are suitable for living rooms, bedrooms, dining areas, chandeliers, wall lamps, celebrations or sheltered outdoor spaces. The key question, however, is whether you are looking for an LED candle bulb for an existing fitting or a battery-powered decorative candle.
If you focus solely on appearance, it is easy to overlook important details. The following tips will help you assess marketing claims and choose flameless candles that suit your home.
An LED candle bulb with an E14 base will not fit an E27 socket. The designations C35, C37, G45 and P45 also describe the shape and size of the bulb. Before buying, check your light’s fitting and compare the maximum permitted dimensions.
Length can be particularly important for chandeliers and wall lamps. A C35 bulb with a height of 119 mm will not be suitable for every narrow fitting, even if the base is compatible.
With smart LED candles, brightness is often adjusted via an app, remote control or voice commands. A conventional leading-edge or trailing-edge wall dimmer, on the other hand, can cause flickering, connection problems or malfunctions.
Therefore, check the manufacturer’s specific details: dimmable via app is not the same as suitable for a conventional dimmer switch.
A light with an IP20 rating is intended for dry indoor spaces. For balconies, patios or gardens, you need a model with a suitable protection rating, such as IP44 for splash-proof areas. IP44 does not mean that the candle can be submerged in water or exposed to continuous, unprotected rain.
Electric candles do not have an open flame or dripping wax, making them a safer choice around children and pets. However, small components, batteries and cables should still be kept out of reach.
For bulbs used in existing lamps, the following details are particularly important:
A filament LED candle with clear glass is especially suitable for lamps where the bulb remains visible. Frosted glass distributes the light more diffusely and can help reduce glare.
Brightness is measured in lumens, not watts. Watts primarily indicate energy consumption. For comparison, some smart models in the selection provide between 420 and 555 lumens at 4.9 or 6.5 watts respectively. A Philips LED candle bulb is listed with 250 lumens and 2.2 watts.
For a classic candlelight effect, warm white LED light between around 2,500 and 2,700 Kelvin is ideal. Smart models with a range of 2700 to 6500 Kelvin can also produce more neutral or cooler shades of white. For coloured scenes, an RGB+CCT LED bulb offers both RGB colours and adjustable white tones.
The colour rendering index, CRI or Ra, indicates how naturally colours appear under the light. A value of Ra ≥ 80 is specified for several of the models mentioned and is suitable for general home lighting.
Before buying a smart LED candle, check the following:
Battery-powered LED candles with timers and remote controls can be placed wherever you like. Rechargeable LED tealights reduce the need for disposable batteries, but require a suitable charging option. For mains-powered bulbs, manufacturers often state a lifespan of 15,000 or 25,000 hours. This figure is a guideline based on the product data, not a guarantee for every usage scenario.
Why this product suits this profile: The E27 LED candle is suitable for many standard lamps and provides warm white light at 2700 Kelvin.
The product details explicitly state E27, 250 lumens and “not dimmable”. This makes it easier to assess compatibility before buying.
2.2 W power consumption, stated lifespan of 15,000 hours, frosted P45 glass and energy efficiency class E.
Why this product suits this profile: For exposed chandeliers or wall lamps, the clear C35 glass design combines decorative filament styling with app and voice control.
Dimming is controlled via the AigoSmart app rather than a conventional wall dimmer. Indoor use and IP20 are clearly specified.
470 lumens, 2700–6500 Kelvin, Wi-Fi plus Bluetooth, 360-degree beam angle and 4.5 W power consumption.
Why this product suits this profile: The four small rechargeable LED tealights can be placed on tables, windowsills or in decorative holders without needing a power socket.
The set is listed as an expansion pack without a charger. If you already have a suitable charging option, you can take this limitation into account before buying.
Four lights, integrated rechargeable batteries, LED flickering effect and simple operation via an on/off switch.
Why this product suits this profile: The three decorative candles in different heights are ideal for cable-free arrangements and can be controlled via remote control and timer.
The IP44 rating is specified for sheltered, covered areas protected from splashing water. This prevents the assumption that the candles are suitable for unprotected outdoor use.
Three sizes, batteries included, remote control, timer and cordless use at 3 V DC.
We have put together a complete, regularly updated list of products that fully meet these strict selection criteria and the safety regulations applicable in the EU.
Before installing an LED candle bulb, switch off the light and disconnect it from the power supply. Check that the voltage, base and shape are compatible. Smart bulbs are generally set up in the app first; Wi-Fi models may require a 2.4 GHz network.
Battery-powered models should be placed somewhere dry and stable. IP44 products should only be used in sheltered outdoor areas. Dispose of batteries and rechargeable batteries in accordance with local regulations. Bulbs with glass covers can be cleaned with a dry, soft cloth when switched off.
Consumption depends on the wattage and how long the candle is used. An LED candle bulb rated at 2.2 watts uses 2.2 kWh over 1,000 operating hours in theory. A smart model rated at 4.5 watts uses 4.5 kWh under the same conditions. Battery-powered candles do not require a mains connection, but they do incur the cost of batteries or recharging.
The stated lifespan for the bulbs listed is, for example, 15,000 or 25,000 hours. For decorative candles, operating time also depends on battery capacity, charging cycles, temperature and storage. The manufacturer’s figure should be treated as a guideline.
Flameless electric candles eliminate open flames, smoke and dripping wax. They are not toys, however. Battery compartments, button cells and small parts must be kept out of reach. Lights connected to the mains are also subject to the usual rules for protection against electric shocks and overheating.
