LED curtain lights for Christmas can add decorative illumination to windows, doors, walls or balconies. In practice, however, not every model is suitable for every location. Unclear dimensions, an unsuitable power supply or misunderstood protection ratings often lead to disappointing purchases.
This buying guide explains what private customers in Germany should look out for before buying, and which design best suits each type of use.
For curtain lights, dimensions such as 200 × 200 cm usually refer to the curtain itself. The connection cable and lead are added separately. A 200 cm-wide model may be suitable for a 180 cm-wide window, while a 100 cm-wide curtain is more suitable for small windows, furniture or partial areas.
The arrangement of the light strands is also important. A dense curtain with lots of LEDs creates more even Christmas window lighting than a few light points spaced far apart.
For waterproof LED string lights or an LED light net, you should check the specific IP protection rating. IP44 means protection against solid foreign objects measuring 1 mm or more, as well as splashing water from various directions. This is relevant for sheltered balconies, patios or façade areas, but it does not replace protection from the weather.
The power supply, USB plug and connection points must still be protected from direct rain unless the manufacturer states otherwise. An outdoor model is not required for indoor spaces, dry conservatories or living areas.
Curtain lights with a timer can make operation easier. The function often runs on a fixed cycle, such as six hours on and 18 hours off. This is not the same as a freely programmable timer.
With remote-controlled curtain lights, you should also make sure that the receiver is accessible. Walls, furniture or an unsuitable position can reduce the range. For USB models, check whether a mains adaptor is included or needs to be purchased separately.
Compact dimensions are sufficient for small windows or decorative accents. Large windows, doors or walls generally look more balanced with wider coverage. The number of LEDs provides a better basis for comparison than cable length alone.
Warm white curtain lights with around 2,500 to 3,000 Kelvin have a more yellowish tone and are well suited to traditional Christmas decorations. RGB models offer colour changes, static colours and dynamic modes. They are a good fit for party rooms, children’s bedrooms or year-round interior styling, but may look less traditional.
A USB curtain light operating at 5 volts can, for example, be connected to a USB mains adaptor, power bank or suitable port. Before use, make sure the power source matches the stated voltage. Battery operation offers greater flexibility when mounting the lights, but requires the batteries to be replaced regularly.
Actual electricity costs depend on the power rating, daily operating time and electricity tariff. Lower LED power consumption reduces usage, but you should still consider the timer and your usage habits.
Before installation, make sure the surface, product weight and fixing materials are suitable for one another. Clear hooks or adhesive pads are suitable for smooth, clean surfaces. For outdoor installation, wind, moisture and safe cable routing must be taken into account.
String lights should not be stretched over sharp edges, and power supplies should not be covered. Disconnect the power before cleaning or storing the lights for a longer period. For outdoor products, the connection must not be left permanently in a puddle or exposed to direct rain.
Why this product suits this profile: The 100 cm version is suitable for smaller windows, shelves, mantelpieces or individual decorative areas indoors. It is designed for installation across a manageable area.
The clearly defined width reduces the risk of buying lighting that is too large for a small area. The model is described for decorative indoor use, not as outdoor lighting.

Transparent adhesive hooks, suction cups or the supplied hooks are suitable for smooth, dry surfaces. The weight should be distributed evenly. In rented properties, use fixings that can be removed without leaving any residue. Cables must not become trapped between the window frame and sash.
Service life depends on LED quality, operating time, heat generation, moisture and proper storage. Using a timer can reduce the daily operating time. Before storing the curtain lights, make sure they are dry, loosely coiled and stored without putting tension on the cables.
You can estimate the cost using this calculation: power in kilowatts × operating hours × electricity price. For a model rated at 4 watts and used for six hours a day, this corresponds to 0.024 kWh per day. The actual amount depends on your personal electricity tariff. A timer prevents the lights from being left on unnecessarily.
