LED fairy lights create decorative lighting in the living room, on the balcony, in the garden or at celebrations. But product photos and labels such as “outdoor”, “waterproof” or “smart” on their own don’t tell you much about how suitable they really are. If you only look at the number of LEDs or the lowest price, you might end up with a string that’s too short, without a suitable power supply where you want to use it, or not protected well enough for outdoor use.
The protection rating IP44 means protection from splashing water from various directions. It does not allow you to submerge the fairy lights or the battery compartment in water. For balconies, terraces and sheltered garden areas, IP44 can be suitable as long as you follow the manufacturer’s instructions. An IP20 light string is designed strictly for dry indoor spaces.
With a fairy light set, you should distinguish between the lead cable, lit length and spacing between the LEDs. A 10-metre string, for example, may include an additional power lead, while the actual illuminated section is shorter. For railings, trees or façades, it’s worth sketching out roughly the distances you need.
Eight lighting modes, memory function, dimming or music control can be useful, but only if they fit how you’ll use them. For a subtle warm white string in the bedroom, a simple continuous-on mode is often enough. For party lighting or a smart fairy-light set, colour changes, app control and voice commands can add real value.
A battery-powered fairy light set can be placed flexibly wherever there’s no socket. Check the battery type required, how many are needed and whether they’re included. For longer installations or continuous use, a mains adapter can be more practical. A product with a 220–240-volt adapter should only be connected exactly as per the instructions.
A warm white fairy light at around 3000 Kelvin produces a warm, yellowish effect and is often suitable for living rooms, weddings, Christmas decorations and cosy outdoor areas. Cool white light at about 6500 Kelvin looks much crisper and more like daylight. A multicolour string with red, green, blue and yellow LEDs is more geared towards party lighting, children’s rooms or festive decor.
The lumen value describes the light output. With decorative products, the focus is usually on atmosphere rather than lighting a room. A single LED fairy-light set therefore won’t automatically replace a functional lamp.
Outdoors, the stated protection rating should match the environment. Also check whether only the light string is protected or the power supply and battery compartment as well. Don’t wedge cables under doors and don’t leave them lying in puddles. Before storing, it’s best to remove the batteries and store the lights dry without sharp bends.
An LED rope light usually spreads light more evenly along a line. A classic string with individual light points is better for railings, branches and decorative wrapping. A meteor light chain with hanging tubes creates a falling-light effect and needs sufficient height.
Why this product suits the profile: This battery-powered indoor light needs two AA batteries and can be placed on furniture or mounted on walls without a socket.
The product details clearly state IP20 and “indoor”, helping you avoid using it outside.

Why this product suits the profile: This meteor light chain is designed for larger decorative installations on trees, façades or event spaces.
With IP44, the protection rating is stated; at the same time, the set should only be protected against splashes and must not be submerged.

We’ve compiled a comprehensive, continually updated list of products that fully meet these strict selection criteria and the safety regulations in force in the EU.
That depends on the power supply, model and the manufacturer’s guidance. With battery-powered variants, long continuous use shortens battery life. A timer, for example with a six-hour on time, can limit daily use. Mains-powered products shouldn’t be left unattended if the instructions don’t permit it.
Only if the protection rating and installation conditions are suitable. IP44 protects against splashing water, not submersion. Power supply, plug and battery compartment must be particularly well protected. In frost, heavy rain or when not in use for a longer time, taking the set down and storing it dry is the cautious approach.
For decorative lighting, LEDs generally run with comparatively low power consumption. Actual use depends on the number of LEDs, wattage, operating time and power source. With battery models, you should also factor in the cost and disposal of used batteries.
