Buying LED fairy lights: a guide to choosing the right option for interiors, balconies, gardens and events

LED fairy lights are ideal for Christmas decorations, living spaces, balconies, patios, gardens and seasonal events. The choice ranges from warm white fairy lights to app-controlled RGB LED fairy lights. However, differences in length, power supply, IP rating and light colour determine whether the lighting is practical for everyday use.

Common pitfalls when buying LED fairy lights

1. Confusing the total length with the illuminated length

A specification such as “10 metres” may include the connecting cable. When planning your installation, you should therefore check:

  • How long is the total length of the fairy lights?
  • How long is the illuminated section?
  • How much space is there between the LEDs?
  • Is the connecting cable long enough to reach the socket or power supply?

A denser arrangement, with more LEDs per metre, creates a more continuous pattern of light. For a large Christmas tree, however, a longer set with greater spacing between the LEDs may be more suitable.

2. “Suitable for outdoor use” does not automatically mean completely waterproof

The level of protection is described by the IP rating. IP44 generally protects against solid foreign objects of a certain size and against splashing water from various directions. However, IP44 fairy lights must not be immersed in water and should not be left in standing water.

Connectors, power supplies and battery compartments are also important for outdoor areas. These components must likewise be protected from rain. Fairy lights designed for indoor and outdoor use should only be used in accordance with the product specifications.

3. Choosing the wrong light colour and features for the intended use

Warm white fairy lights at around 3000 K create a subtle effect in living spaces, around furniture or on a decorated Christmas tree. Cool white light at around 6500 K looks much more like daylight and may be suitable for highlighting contours, shop windows or certain types of event decoration.

Eight lighting modes are not necessary for every household either. If you want a steady, consistent light, a simple controller may be more practical. For parties or seasonal decorations, dimmable fairy lights, fairy lights with 8 modes or smart fairy lights can offer additional options.

Technical specifications to check before buying

Length, number of LEDs and arrangement

The number of LEDs alone does not indicate brightness. The spacing and arrangement of the light points are also important. A 8.3-metre string with 100 LEDs and 8 cm spacing creates a different lighting effect from a 10.3-metre string with 100 LEDs and 10 cm spacing.

You can use these guidelines when choosing:

  • Small decorations: short strings or LED light balls for shelves, beds and tables
  • Christmas trees and balconies: medium length with evenly spaced LEDs
  • Facades, railings and larger areas: longer strings or meteor shower lights
  • Accent lighting: LED rope lights or RGB LED fairy lights with targeted positioning

Power supply and ongoing costs

Battery-powered fairy lights can be installed flexibly in places without a socket. Check whether batteries are included and how many are required. If several AA batteries are needed, replacing them regularly can become more time-consuming with daily use.

Mains-powered models are generally better suited to longer periods of use. Check the power consumption in watts, the voltage and the supplied power adapter. Smart models also require an app, Wi-Fi or a compatible smart home system. According to the product information, the Nanoleaf version in this selection supports Matter via Wi-Fi as well as voice control with Alexa, Google and Apple.

IP rating, installation and safety

For indoor spaces, a light with IP20 is often sufficient, provided it is installed in a dry location. For example, the Atmosphera LED garlands with 20 balls are designed for indoor use and have an IP20 rating according to the product data. Models with IP44 may be suitable for sheltered outdoor areas, but must be protected from prolonged exposure to moisture and flooding.

Before installation, you should:

  1. Check the cable, plug, power adapter and battery compartment for damage.
  2. Protect outdoor connections from direct rain and standing water.
  3. Do not run the cable over sharp edges or across highly tensioned surfaces.
  4. Disconnect the lights from the power supply if you will be away for an extended period.
  5. Follow the age-rating and installation instructions.

Frequently asked questions about LED fairy lights

How do you attach LED fairy lights outdoors?

Use suitable cable clips or attachment points, and avoid sharp edges. With waterproof fairy lights rated IP44, the power adapter and connectors must also be protected from direct rain. The lights must not be left in water or immersed.

How long do LED fairy lights last?

Their actual service life depends on the LED technology, power adapter, batteries, installation and storage. Indoor models should be stored in a dry place and protected from mechanical strain. After the season, outdoor models should be checked for damaged cables, cracks and signs of moisture.

Do LED fairy lights use a lot of electricity?

Compared with many older types of lighting, LEDs generally use very little electrical power. The specified wattage is the key factor when calculating running costs. For mains-powered lights, you can estimate the cost by multiplying the power in kilowatts by the daily operating time and the electricity price. Battery-powered fairy lights, on the other hand, incur ongoing costs when the batteries need replacing.
