LED lighting can transform a desk, TV unit, garden or car. However, attractive product images and terms like "Smart", "RGBIC" or "waterproof" don't automatically lead to the right solution. What really matters is where you plan to use it, the power supply, the ingress protection rating and how the lighting is actually controlled.
An IP44 rating protects a product against solid objects larger than 1 mm and against splashing water from any direction. This can be sufficient for garden lighting, balconies and party decorations, provided the product is installed in a sheltered position. However, IP44 does not mean the string lights can be submerged in water or left permanently exposed to heavy rain without protection. The battery compartment in particular must be kept dry.
A standard RGB LED light strip typically shows one colour across the entire strip. With an RGBIC LED strip, different sections can display different colours at the same time, depending on the model. This enables chasing effects and colour gradients. If you expect this feature, look specifically for "RGBIC", "segmented control" or similar wording.
The stated length doesn't always match the space you have in mind. The power supply, connecting cable and any extensions may need extra room. What's more, adhesive strips only stick well to clean, dry, smooth surfaces. On rough plaster, dusty wood or greasy surfaces, an LED light strip can come loose. Gentle curves are usually better than sharp bends when going around corners.
App control isn't automatically compatible with every smart-home platform. So if you're buying a smart LED light strip, check whether Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Matter, Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or Samsung SmartThings are actually supported.
Mains-powered LED light strips are ideal for TV walls, gaming setups and desks where a socket is nearby. Battery-operated string lights are more flexible to position, but require regular battery changes. With products that take three AA batteries, these aren't always included in the box.
A solar-powered string light needs a spot that gets plenty of sunlight. In the shade or during short winter days, the available lighting time may be shorter. For permanent indoor installations, solar power is therefore usually not the obvious choice.
For indoor use, a model without any stated outdoor protection is often sufficient. For the garden, patio or balcony, the product description should mention a suitable IP rating. With IP44: the product is protected against splashing water, but is not fully waterproof. Power supplies, plugs and battery compartments must be installed according to the instructions and protected from direct moisture.
Why this product fits the profile: This battery-operated string light is designed for decorative use without a nearby socket, offering warm white light for living spaces, parties, weddings or seasonal decoration.
The specifications state 8.3 m total length, three AA batteries and IP44. This lets you assess the reach, power supply and limited splash-water protection before buying.
100 warm white LEDs, 8 light functions, memory mode and IP44 protection for decorative indoor and sheltered outdoor areas.
Why this product fits the profile: This model is aimed at smart-home users and anyone who wants to control gaming or TV lighting via app, voice assistant or compatible platforms.
The product details clearly distinguish between indoor and outdoor use. Matter, Wi-Fi at 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth are also listed as connection options.
5 m length, RGBIC segment control, protective coating, 24 W input power and support for multiple smart-home systems.
Why this product fits the profile: For car interior lighting and custom vehicle decoration, this set offers a 12 V design, app control and cuttable light guides for various installation positions.
The specifications state the voltage range of 10–16 V, installation instructions and the 6 m optical fibre length. This allows you to check compatibility with your vehicle before fitting.
App control, 16 million colours according to the product description, 29 preset modes and a sound sensor for changing light effects.
Why this product fits the profile: This solar-powered string light is ideal for paths, patios and garden areas where there's no socket and enough sunlight reaches during the day.
The product description mentions the solar cell, built-in battery, 8 m length and IP44. This makes the charging conditions and splash-water protection clear before installation.

Before installation, clean, degrease and dry the surface. With LED light strips, also pay attention to the bend radius specified by the manufacturer. Power supplies must not be covered, and a coiled strip should not be left switched on for long periods, as heat can build up.
With battery-operated products, it's best not to mix old and new batteries. If string lights won't be used for a while, remove the batteries. Outdoor products with IP44 should not be placed in standing water; even with a waterproof LED string light, the battery compartment remains an important thing to check.
The consumption depends on the power rating, operating time and number of lights. A light strip with 24 W uses 0.024 kWh when running for one hour. For an accurate estimate, check the wattage of the specific product and your local electricity price.
The actual lifespan depends on factors including operating time, heat build-up, moisture, the power supply and mechanical stress. A strip that's permanently coiled or incorrectly installed may be under greater strain. Manufacturer claims about LED lifespan should therefore be considered alongside the installation and safety instructions.
Only if the manufacturer explicitly states it's suitable for outdoor use and the IP rating matches the installation location. IP44 protects against splashing water, not against submersion or all weather conditions. Mains connections, controllers and battery compartments must be kept dry and positioned according to the instructions.
