Whether you’re lighting a living room, bedroom, gaming room, dining area, balcony or garden, LED lighting and decorative lamps offer plenty of ways to make your space both practical and inviting. Choose from LED strip lights and RGB LED strips to table lamps, pendant lights, fairy lights, smart lighting and decorative Christmas lights.
However, product specifications aren’t always directly comparable. For example, a high number of LEDs doesn’t automatically mean even light coverage. And if a product is described as ‘suitable for outdoor use’, check its IP rating and the exact power supply requirements.
A light with an IP20 rating is generally intended for dry indoor spaces. For a balcony, patio or garden, look for ratings such as IP44. This rating protects against solid objects and splashing water, but not against full immersion.
For battery-powered lights, remember to check the battery box too. Even if the light is splash-proof, the battery box mustn’t be left in water or exposed to heavy moisture for long periods.
An RGB LED strip needs a suitable socket and a clean, dry surface to stick to. For pendant lights, the connection, ceiling height and installation method are all important. Battery-powered models offer greater flexibility, but you’ll need to replace the batteries regularly.
Before you buy, check:
A dimmable LED bulb may be controlled by a switch, remote control, app or sensor. These systems aren’t automatically compatible with one another. If you’re buying smart lighting, check which apps and voice assistants it supports.
For example, a product with music synchronisation may use a built-in microphone or a smartphone app. How it works will depend on the controls and the permissions required by the app.
Colour temperature is measured in Kelvin (K):
Wattage tells you how much energy a light uses, not how bright it is. Brightness is measured in lumens. For LED strip lights, you should also check the LED density. For example, a 5-metre strip with 150 LEDs has 30 LEDs per metre.
IP20 lights are suitable for indoor spaces, provided they’re installed in a dry area. Products with an IP44 rating may be suitable for sheltered outdoor areas. Even so, keep plugs, power supplies and battery boxes protected from prolonged exposure to moisture.
For mains-powered lighting in Germany, you’ll also need to check that the voltage and plug are suitable. For example, an LED strip may use an adapter to convert 100–240 V AC to 24 V DC. Install pendant lights only in accordance with the installation instructions, and disconnect the power supply before working on the light.
Measure the space before you buy. A pendant light with a 120 cm cable needs enough ceiling height, while a compact table lamp may be better suited to a bedside table, sideboard or desk.
Check the material details carefully. Glass, fabric, acrylic, metal, plastic and wood all affect the weight, cleaning requirements and appearance. Many decorative lamps can be cleaned with a soft, dry cloth. Don’t use water to clean LED strip lights or electronic components.
Why it’s a good fit: This 5-metre RGB strip is ideal for the back of a TV, shelves, desks or a gaming room. The remote control and self-adhesive backing make it easy to install indoors.
The product details specify a length of 5 m, 150 LEDs, 24 V operation and an IP20 rating. This makes it clear that the strip is intended for dry indoor spaces only.
RGB colour selection, adjustable brightness, a 24 V adapter and adhesive backing for smooth, clean surfaces.
Why it’s a good fit: This table lamp combines a white jade glass shade with a metal base. It’s suitable for indoor use on a bedside table, sideboard or desk.
The lamp is specifically intended for indoor use and takes an E14 bulb rated at up to 25 W. This makes it easier to choose a suitable bulb.
Glass shade, metal base, 1.6 m mains cable and an integrated in-line switch.
Why it’s a good fit: This battery-powered pendant light can be hung up without a fixed mains connection. It’s suitable for indoor spaces, sheltered decorative displays or events.
The power source is clearly specified as four AA batteries, which aren’t included. The timer runs for six hours, followed by an 18-hour break.
No wall socket needed, 100 cm power lead, hook and built-in timer.
Why it’s a good fit: With 15 hanging tubes and 720 warm white LEDs, these meteor shower lights are designed for larger decorative displays on trees, façades or indoors.
The IP44 rating is clearly stated and indicates protection against splashing water. However, the lights must not be immersed and need to be installed securely.
720 LEDs at 3000 K, 10 × 0.5 m coverage, 5 m extension cable and memory function.
We’ve put together a complete, regularly updated list of products that meet these strict selection criteria and fully comply with the safety regulations in force in the EU.
Energy use depends on the wattage, how long the light is on and how many lights you have. A 10 W LED light uses 0.01 kWh for every hour it’s switched on. For LED strip lights and fairy lights, you should also consider the length or number of LEDs. Timer functions can limit how long the lights are on each day.
Actual lifespan depends on the model, heat dissipation, how long the light is used and its surroundings. With lights that have built-in LEDs, you often can’t replace the bulb. For lamps with an E14 or E27 fitting, you can choose and replace the bulb separately, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
Only if the product is specifically suitable for outdoor use and has an appropriate IP rating. IP44 protects against splashing water, but not immersion. Keep power supplies, plugs and battery boxes dry and protected from direct exposure to the weather. Before each use, also check the cables, casing and connections for any visible damage.
