LED lighting can help you structure a room, illuminate a workspace, or create a decorative atmosphere in your living room. The options range from classic lamps to smart LED bulbs and RGBIC light strips for gaming, TV and vehicles. What really matters isn’t the longest list of features, but the right combination of light output, control, installation and safety.
“16 million colours” describes the range of hues available, but it doesn’t automatically mean high brightness. For decorative ambient lighting, that can be perfectly adequate. As a main light source in your living room or at your desk, however, lumens, beam angle and positioning are far more important. An RGB light strip won’t necessarily replace a functional LED ceiling light.
App control doesn’t automatically mean a lamp will work with every smart home system. Check whether the product supports Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or a standard like Matter. With Alexa-compatible lighting and Google Home lighting, you may need additional accounts, a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network or a compatible hub.
Adhesive LED light strips only stick properly to clean, dry and smooth surfaces. Sharp bends can damage the circuit tracks. A strip without the right IP rating isn’t suitable for damp rooms or outdoor use. For car interior lighting, you also need to make sure the voltage, cable routing and mounting position are right for your vehicle.
Brightness is measured in lumens. A dimmable LED floor lamp with 1,000 lumens can work well as supplementary room lighting, but its actual suitability depends on room size, lamp height and light distribution. Colour temperature is measured in Kelvin:
For decorative LED lighting, colour gradients, scenes and even illumination are also important. RGBIC LED strips can display several colour zones at once, whereas basic RGB strips usually show a single colour across their entire length.
Pay attention to mains voltage, connection type and power consumption. A product running at 24 W needs a different power supply than a battery-operated LED night light. For a rough idea of running costs, use this formula:
Power in kilowatts × hours of use × electricity price = running costs
For battery-operated lamps, factor in the battery type and how often you’ll need to replace them. The Aigostar LED night light plugs directly into a 220–240 V socket, runs at 1 W and has a dusk sensor. It’s rated for indoor use with an IP20 classification.
Before buying smart lighting, check the following points:
For TV backlighting, the right screen size is also important. The Govee Envisual TV Backlight T2 is designed for televisions between 55 and 65 inches, according to the product specifications. The LED strip should not be cut, as this could damage the circuitry.

The lifespan depends on the design, heat dissipation, hours of use and power supply. It’s not sensible to give a one-size-fits-all figure for all LED products. When choosing, check the manufacturer’s stated lifespan, switching cycles and warranty conditions. An LED strip should not be run while still rolled up, as heat can build up.
First, install the light and connect it to the intended power supply. Then download the manufacturer’s app and pair it via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. For Matter-compatible lamps, integration usually happens through a compatible smart home hub. Check the Wi-Fi band, app requirements and your voice assistant’s support beforehand.
LEDs typically use less electrical power than older bulbs for the same light output, but the actual consumption depends on the product and how long you use it. For a realistic estimate, look at the wattage, daily running time and your electricity tariff. With RGB lighting, power consumption can vary depending on brightness and the effect you choose.
