An LED string light can add a decorative touch to your balcony, patio, garden or living space. But when you're buying one, it's not just about the light colour and design. Often, unclear details about the protection rating, power supply or cable length mean the string light ends up being impractical for your intended spot.
An IP44 string light is protected against solid objects larger than 1 mm and against splashing water from any direction. However, this does not mean it can be submerged in water or left permanently exposed to heavy rain without protection. The battery compartment is especially important: on many models, the protection rating only applies to certain components.
For garden lighting and balcony lighting, you should therefore mount the string light so that water cannot collect at the connectors or the battery box.
With a solar string light, the stated length often consists of an illuminated section plus an additional cable to the solar panel. So for planning purposes, three details matter:
A string with few LEDs and a large gap between them is better suited to a loose, decorative look. For railings, small trees or even garden lighting, a shorter LED spacing is usually more practical.
A battery-operated string light can be placed flexibly in spots without a power socket. However, you'll need to check the batteries regularly and remove them if the light is stored for a long time. A solar string light, on the other hand, needs a spot where the panel gets as much sun as possible. In the shade or during short daylight hours, the available lighting time may be reduced.
A timer, for example with a fixed 6-hour cycle, can cut down on daily effort. But it doesn't replace the need to check that the battery box and connections are protected from moisture.
A warm white string light at around 3,000 Kelvin gives off a yellowish, warm glow and often suits patios, living rooms, weddings or garden parties. Multi-coloured LEDs are better for eye-catching decorations and seasonal Christmas lighting.
The shape of the bulb also affects the look:
Check before you buy whether batteries are included. With several products, they are not supplied. Also, the battery type matters – for example, AA batteries or a built-in Ni-MH rechargeable battery.
With solar models, buyers should consider where the panel will go. The panel needs enough daylight and should be cleaned of dust regularly. A solar string light is therefore not equally suitable for every covered balcony.
For outdoor use, ratings like IP44 are an important guide. The light must only be used according to the manufacturer's instructions. Battery boxes and connections should not be placed in water. String lights must also not be covered or placed near naked flames or strong heat sources.
For an LED string light for indoors and outdoors, you should also check that outdoor use is explicitly stated. Don't automatically assume a decorative design means it's suitable for both indoors and outdoors.
Why this product fits the profile: This solar-powered string light doesn't need a fixed mains connection and offers 50 warm white LEDs over 8 metres. It's a good match for small gardens, pathways and patios.
The details clearly state the number of LEDs, spacing, panel type and IP44 protection. This makes planning easier and prevents you from misjudging the illuminated length.
50 LEDs, 8 metres total length, three light modes and a polycrystalline solar panel; the built-in 300 mAh Ni-MH battery is rechargeable.
Why this product fits the profile: This warm white party string light combines visible globe bulbs with a timer function and is designed for the garden, balcony, patio and indoors.
The 5-metre length, 50 cm spacing and 8 cm diameter are all clearly stated. The IP44 note is accompanied by a safety warning that the battery box must not be submerged.
10 warm white LEDs, 6-hour timer and battery operation with 3 AA batteries; batteries are not included.
Why this product fits the profile: This meteor string light is designed for larger decorative areas, seasonal installations and colourful Christmas lighting.
The coverage of 10 × 0.5 metres, 15 hanging points and a 5-metre connection cable make the installation requirements clear in advance.
720 multi-coloured LEDs, 15 tubes, memory mode, 220–240 volt adapter with 9 watts and IP44 protection.
Why this product fits the profile: This lantern string light with a transparent cable is ideal for living rooms, bedrooms, patios and events where decoration is the focus.
The total length of 2.3 metres and the number of 10 LEDs are clearly stated. The model runs on 2 AA batteries, which need to be bought separately.
10 warm white LEDs, battery-powered operation, transparent cable and a length suited to smaller decorative areas.
We've put together a full, regularly updated list of products that meet these strict selection criteria and the safety regulations in force across the EU.
Before you start, measure out the route of the string and choose fixing points without sharp edges. Cables should not be sharply kinked or laid under tension. For outdoor lighting, it's best to position it so that water can drain away.
For battery models, keep the following in mind:
A solar string light should be positioned so that the panel faces a spot with enough daylight. For mains-powered models, make sure you have the right power supply and that the connection cable is routed safely.
The actual lifespan depends on factors such as how long it's used, how it's stored, moisture and mechanical stress. LEDs generally use very little energy, but batteries or power adapters may fail before the bulbs themselves. Storing the light in a dry place and removing batteries during long breaks can prevent damage from leaking batteries.
That depends on the stated protection rating and the manufacturer's instructions. An IP44 string light is protected against splashing water, but is not designed to be submerged. During cold or very wet weather, it may be a good idea to take the string light down and store it in a dry place.
For battery-operated models, the number of LEDs, the lighting time and the battery type determine the consumption. A solar string light uses daylight to charge, but needs a suitable location. For mains-powered models, you can estimate the running cost based on the wattage of the adapter and the daily operating time. Also look out for timer functions if you don't want the lights on all night.
