Buying an LED string light: a guide to choosing one for interiors, balconies, gardens and celebrations

An LED string light can illuminate your living room, balcony, patio or garden decoratively with minimal effort. However, it is worth taking a close look at the technical specifications before buying. Product images often show an atmospheric setting, but they do not always reveal the actual illuminated length, whether the model is suitable for outdoor use or how many batteries are required.

Common pitfalls when buying an LED string light

1. Total length and illuminated length are confused

With string lights, it is not just the total length that matters. Part of the cable may serve as a lead between the socket or battery compartment and the first light. A string light with a total length of 5 metres may therefore have a considerably shorter illuminated section. When planning, you should consider these details separately:

  • Total length: complete length including the lead
  • Illuminated length: section containing the LEDs or light fittings
  • Distance between the lights: affects the visual density
  • Lead cable: important if the battery compartment or socket is further away

2. “Suitable for outdoor use” does not mean waterproof

The IP44 rating indicates protection against solid foreign objects larger than 1 millimetre and against water splashes from various directions. It is suitable for many decorative applications in sheltered outdoor areas, such as on a balcony, patio or under a canopy. However, IP44 does not mean that the string light may be submerged. The battery compartment, plug and connections should be protected from continuous rain.

A model with IP20, on the other hand, is intended primarily for dry indoor areas. A decorative string light of this kind should not be used in the garden or on an unprotected exterior wall.

3. The light colour and operating mode do not suit the intended use

Warm white string lights with around 2,700 to 3,000 Kelvin create a yellowish, warm glow and are often suitable for living spaces, dinner parties, wedding decorations or cosy evenings. Cool white light has a more functional appearance and may be better suited to practical areas. Multicoloured versions are more suitable for party lighting, children’s bedrooms or seasonal decorations.

The power supply should also suit the installation location:

  • Battery-operated string light: flexible and does not require a socket, but batteries need replacing regularly
  • Solar string light: requires a sunny location and sufficient charging time
  • Mains-powered models: suitable for longer operating times, but require a socket
  • USB or rechargeable models: practical for certain indoor areas and mobile applications

Which technical specifications matter before buying

Light points, spacing and length

A string light with 100 LEDs spread across approximately 10 metres distributes light much more evenly than a short string with a few widely spaced light fittings. Close LED spacing is often useful for a hedge or railing. A string light with baubles, on the other hand, creates individual decorative accents, as the light fittings can be larger and further apart.

Functions and controls

Check whether the product has only an on/off switch or offers several lighting modes. A dimmable string light, or a model with brightness control, offers more flexibility for living spaces and events. Memory functions can be useful if the last selected setting is retained the next time the light is switched on. A timer reduces the need for manual operation, but it is not a substitute for the manufacturer's safety instructions.

Safety and care

LEDs produce comparatively little heat during operation, but they must not be covered or used near naked flames. Batteries should not be mixed if they are different types or have different charge levels. If storing the light for an extended period, it is advisable to remove the batteries from the battery compartment. A dry, soft cloth is generally sufficient for cleaning. Connections and battery compartments must not be immersed in water.

Choosing an LED string light to suit its location

For Christmas lights on dry indoor surfaces, short strings, string lights with baubles or multicoloured models may be sufficient. For a balcony or patio, you should look for a suitable protection rating and sheltered plug connections. Solar string lights are an attractive option for garden lighting if the solar panel receives sufficient sunlight during the day. In shaded areas, the illumination time may be shorter.

An LED rope light usually distributes light over a wider area and is suitable for outlines, shelves or larger decorative lines. String lights with baubles are often more suitable for individual accents on furniture or walls. For a wedding or larger celebration, you should also check the lead cable, attachment options and controls before combining several strings.

Frequently asked questions about LED string lights

How long does an LED string light last?

The actual service life depends on the LED components, power supply, operating time, storage conditions and moisture. Without specific information from the manufacturer, it is not possible to give a reliable general lifespan. With battery-operated models, the battery type and lighting mode also affect the operating time.

Can I use an LED string light outdoors?

This depends on the stated protection rating. IP44 is suitable for splashing water, but not for immersion in water. IP20 is intended for dry indoor areas. Even with IP44, battery boxes, plugs and connections should be protected from continuous rain.

Does an LED string light use a lot of electricity?

LEDs generally require little electrical power. For mains-powered models, the wattage stated on the product data sheet is the key factor. With a battery-operated string light, ongoing costs mainly result from replacing the batteries. A timer or shorter daily operating time can reduce consumption.
