An LED string light can add a decorative touch to a child's bedroom, balcony or patio. At first glance, however, many options on the market look very similar. Differences in length, light colour, power supply and ingress protection rating determine whether the string light is suitable for your intended use.
Typical buying mistakes come down to three recurring pitfalls:
For a small mirror, a shelf or a bed frame, a short decorative string light is often sufficient. For a balcony, pergola or garden fence, however, several metres make more sense. Pay attention to the specifications for total length, illuminated length and lead-in wire.
A high LED density creates a more even light distribution. With the M.TK MOVETECK LED String Light, for example, the light points are spaced 8 cm apart. It is specified with 100 LEDs and a total length of 8.3 m. The version with 140 LEDs covers 11.2 m, while the variant with 180 LEDs reaches 14.7 m.
The bulb shape also affects the effect. Globes, copper wire, classic light points and meteor tubes create different decorative looks. A meteor shower light, for instance, is ideal for a cascading light effect on windows, trees or facades.
Warm white light tends to feel understated in living spaces and with classic Christmas lighting. Cool white, specified at 6500 K, appears noticeably clearer and more like daylight. For a cosy room decoration, shoppers should therefore look at the light colour first, rather than just the number of LEDs.
A string light with multiple light modes offers extra choice between steady-on, flashing effects, wave or fade functions. A memory function is handy if the last setting you chose is retained when you switch it back on. For a party, wedding or seasonal decoration, this feature can simplify operation. For subtle continuous lighting, however, a simple on/off switch is often enough.
A battery-operated string light can be placed on a balcony, patio or while camping without needing a mains socket. Check whether batteries are included. Several models listed here require 3 AA batteries, which must be purchased separately. Battery compartments should be protected from moisture outdoors and emptied if the lights won't be used for a long time.
A solar-powered string light needs a spot with as much direct sunlight as possible for the solar panel. The VIVREAL version specifies a charging time of 6 to 8 hours under direct sunlight and a run time of 8 to 14 hours. The actual run time can depend on the weather and the charge level.
The ingress protection is indicated by the IP code. IP20 is intended for dry indoor areas. IP44 protects against splashing water from any direction, but is not designed for immersion in water. IP65 offers a higher level of protection against dust and water jets; again, submersion is not intended. A waterproof string light should therefore not be assumed to be suitable for every weather condition. Connections and power adapters must also be protected from standing water.

The lifespan depends on the LED technology, electronics, operating time, moisture and mechanical stress. A general time estimate is therefore not meaningful for every product. Store the string light in a dry place, avoid sharp kinks and only use the specified power supply. For battery-operated models, remove the batteries if the string light won't be used for an extended period.
This depends on the stated IP rating and the construction of the entire system. IP44 is suitable for splashing water, not for standing water. With IP65, the protection against dust and water is better, but the power adapter, plug connections and solar panel should still not be submerged. Indoor products with IP20, such as many decorative globe string lights, should not be used outdoors.
LEDs generally require less electrical power than many older types of bulb. However, the running costs depend on the wattage, daily operating time and power source. With battery-operated models, you also have the cost of AA batteries. Solar string lights don't need mains power, but they rely on sufficient sunlight. So check the stated power consumption and choose the length and brightness to match your actual use.
