LED string lights can add decorative lighting to your balcony, garden, home or celebrations. However, when buying, it is not just the number of LEDs that matters. Unclear length specifications, an incorrectly assessed protection rating or an unsuitable battery power supply can often lead to disappointment.
For many products, the stated length also includes the lead cable. For example, string lights with a total length of 8.3 metres may have 8 metres of illuminated length and 0.3 metres of connecting cable. When planning lighting for a railing, window or tree, the LED spacing length is therefore crucial.
Calling LED string lights waterproof is often inaccurate in everyday use. The IP44 protection rating generally protects against foreign objects and splashing water from various directions. However, it is not intended for immersion in water, permanently wet conditions or unprotected electrical connections.
The battery compartment and mains adapter must be kept dry. In heavy rain, storms or during prolonged periods when the lights are not being used, outdoor lighting should be taken down or stored in a protected place.
Warm white, at around 3000 Kelvin, generally has a yellowish, decorative appearance. It is suitable for Christmas lights, wedding lighting, seating areas and cosy balcony decorations. Cool white, at around 6500 Kelvin, appears noticeably brighter and more like daylight. This light colour is better suited to paths, shop windows, larger outdoor areas or crisp winter decorations.
By contrast, multicoloured string lights with red, green, blue and yellow LEDs create a more eye-catching lighting effect and are suitable for parties or seasonal decorations. For a calm table setting, they may appear too dominant.
Short models are sufficient for small decorations on shelves or windows. For string lights for gardens and balconies, you should first measure the area to be illuminated. A smaller distance between LEDs creates a denser lighting effect, while wider spacing emphasises individual points of light more strongly.
Guide values:
More LEDs do not automatically mean brighter illumination. Light colour, LED spacing, design and the desired decorative effect are also important factors.
Battery-powered string lights can be installed flexibly wherever there is no power socket. This is practical for balconies, camping, table decorations and temporary party lighting. You should consider the number of batteries required, the battery type and the operating time. Some of the models featured here require three AA batteries, which are not included.
Mains-powered models are more suitable for longer periods of use or larger areas. However, a suitable socket must be within reach. For outdoor installations, only a power supply specifically designed for this purpose may be used.
Multiple lighting modes can provide steady light, flashing effects or changing brightness levels, for example. A memory function can save the last selected setting. A timer is particularly useful if you want Christmas lights or party lighting to switch on at roughly the same time each day.
Before buying, check whether the product actually has a timer. Some models offer only different modes or a memory function.
Why this product suits this profile: The 20 star-shaped LEDs and battery operation are ideal for small decorative areas, windows, branches, parties and weddings where there is no nearby power socket.
The decorative star shape creates a clearly recognisable lighting effect, while the compact length makes it easier to plan smaller areas.
20 LEDs, warm white light and flexible battery-powered placement; designed for indoor and decorative outdoor areas.
Why this product suits this profile: 100 warm white LEDs, a total length of 10.3 metres, eight functions and a memory mode provide clear options for gardens, patios, parties or weddings.
The technical specifications state the separate lead cable, LED spacing, battery type and IP44 protection rating, rather than advertising only an imprecise total length.
3000 Kelvin, 100 LEDs, eight lighting functions, memory mode and IP44 protection against splashing water.
Why this product suits this profile: With 15 hanging points and 720 warm white LEDs, these meteor string lights are designed for larger Christmas displays, façades and commercial lighting installations.
The dimensions of 10 × 0.5 metres, the spacing between hanging points and the 220–240-volt adapter make it easier to plan large areas.
720 LEDs, 15 tubes, 3000 Kelvin, memory function and IP44 protection against splashing water.
Why this product suits this profile: RGBY light colours, 50 LEDs and eight functions are ideal for parties, camping, balconies and seasonal decorations.
The available colours and compact length are clearly specified. This makes it easier to judge whether the moving coloured light is right for the occasion.
50 RGBY LEDs, eight functions, battery operation with three AA batteries and IP44 protection against splashing water.
We have put together a complete, regularly updated list of products that fully meet these strict selection criteria and the safety regulations applicable in the EU.
Before installation, check the cables, LED housings, plugs and battery compartment for visible damage. With IP44 string lights, connections must not be left in puddles. The string lights should not be covered, as this could prevent heat from being dissipated properly. Batteries should be removed after prolonged storage to prevent leakage.
For indoor spaces, a string specifically designed for indoor use is sufficient. For example, the Atmosphera “Army” model has IP20 and, according to the product specifications, is intended exclusively for indoor areas. It should therefore not be treated as equivalent to string lights for outdoor use.
First, measure the length of the railing and plan the distance between the attachment points. Cable ties, decorative hooks or suitable clips can be used. The cable must not be pulled taut. For outdoor installation, the battery compartment, plug connections and power supplies must be protected from direct contact with water.
The actual service life depends on operating time, storage, batteries, mechanical strain and moisture. LEDs generally use little energy, but batteries are consumable items. Before each season, check the string lights for brittle cables, loose connections and damaged housings.
The cost mainly depends on the number of LEDs, lighting duration, battery type and selected mode. A timer can limit the daily operating time. For an accurate estimate, consider the manufacturer’s information on power consumption together with your individual battery costs.
