LED string lights are suitable for living spaces, balconies, patios, gardens, weddings, parties and seasonal decorations. The choice ranges from warm white string lights for cosy evenings to solar string lights for paths and flower beds. However, product images and terms such as “waterproof”, “energy-efficient” or “for indoor and outdoor use” alone reveal little about whether a product is genuinely suitable.
If you want to buy LED string lights, you should avoid three common pitfalls in particular:
For string lights designed for indoor and outdoor use, the IP protection rating is a key specification. IP44 means protection against solid foreign objects from 1 millimetre in size, as well as splashing water from various directions. This is suitable for covered balconies, patios or sheltered garden areas, but does not replace protection against immersion.
For outdoor products, you should also check whether the protection rating applies to the entire installation or only to the light itself. A power supply or battery box may have different requirements. When setting up the lights outdoors, it is advisable to position connections under cover wherever possible and follow the instructions for use.
A long string is not automatically suitable for every area. The key factors are:
A short warm white string light may be sufficient for decorating a window. For a hedge or larger gazebo, wider LED spacing may be more suitable, while closely spaced LEDs create a more even lighting effect. With meteor shower string lights, you should also consider the number of hanging tubes, the distance between them and the dimensions of the overall illuminated area.
Depending on the model, LED string lights are powered by mains electricity, batteries or solar energy. Additional features such as dimming levels, flashing modes, memory functions or remote controls are only useful when they suit the intended use. For calm LED decorative lighting, a static mode is often sufficient. For party string lights, weddings or seasonal decorations, several lighting programmes may be more practical.
