LED string lights for indoors and outdoors can add a decorative glow to windows, balconies, gardens, children's bedrooms or patios. However, design is not the only factor to consider when buying. Unclear IP ratings, unsuitable power supplies or a lighted section that is too short often lead to disappointing purchases.
Outdoor string lights should have a clear IP rating. IP44 means protection against solid foreign objects measuring 1 mm or more, as well as splashing water from different directions. This does not mean that the string lights can be left in water or permanently exposed to rain without protection.
Important: with many products, it is not just the LED string that matters – the power supply is important too. A power supply intended for outdoor use must be protected from direct rain and standing water.
With string lights, it is the lighted length that counts, not just the total length. A string with several metres of power cable may look larger in the product photo than the area it actually illuminates. Always check:
String lights with different modes may offer flashing, wave or dimming sequences, for example. In everyday use, however, it is important whether your preferred setting is saved. A memory function can be useful if the lights are used regularly. A timer reduces the need for manual operation, but is not available on every model.
Warm white LED string lights create a yellowish, warm impression with a colour temperature of around 2,500 Kelvin. They are often well suited to living rooms, bedrooms, windows and traditional Christmas decorations.
Multicoloured LED string lights, or string lights with coloured balls, are more suitable for children's bedrooms, birthdays and party lighting. For decorative balls, the material, diameter and spacing should be specified. Larger balls need more space and will therefore appear more closely packed on shorter strings.
Mains-powered models provide a constant power supply, but require an accessible socket. Battery-powered string lights offer greater flexibility for windows, balconies or areas without a socket. However, the batteries need to be checked regularly and removed before storing the lights for an extended period.
For outdoor products, look for IP44, a suitable power supply and safe cable routing. Cables must not be trapped under doors, against sharp-edged furniture or in areas subject to heavy loads.
Why this product suits this profile: These decorative string lights are aimed at shoppers who want to style a living room or child's bedroom with just a few light points. They are intended for indoor use and are mains powered.
The specifications state a total length of 435 cm and a lighted length of 385 cm. This makes it easier to assess the actual coverage area. Use is expressly limited to indoor spaces.
20 coloured balls, each with a diameter of 6 cm; mains operation and a stated minimum guarantee of 2 years under EU consumer law.
Why this product suits this profile: Measuring 1 × 1 m, this LED net light is designed for smaller, clearly defined areas such as bushes, fences, walls or patio areas.
The product specifications state that it has 96 warm white LEDs, a 1 m net area, a 3 m power cable and IP44 protection. The power supply must still be protected from direct contact with water.
Warm white light at 2500 Kelvin; 9 light modes, memory function, mounting hooks and a 31-V safety power supply according to the product description.
Why this product suits this profile: This LED curtain light is designed for windows, doors, walls or sheltered outdoor areas where you want to decorate a larger rectangular surface with warm white light.
The dimensions of 120 × 120 cm and the 128 Micro LEDs make the coverage clear. IP44 indicates protection against splashing water; the product description recommends avoiding direct contact with water.
8 light modes with memory function; 6-hour timer followed by an 18-hour pause; battery operation, with batteries not included.
We have put together a complete, regularly updated list of products that fully meet these strict selection criteria and the safety regulations applicable in the EU.
Before installation, measure the area and plan for a socket or decide where the batteries will be placed. The supplied hooks, suitable cable clips or adhesive strips designed for the surface can be used for secure fastening.
Also bear in mind:
IP44 permits use in areas exposed to splashing water, but it does not replace a fully sheltered installation location. In rain, snow and frost, follow the information provided by the relevant manufacturer. The power supply must always be protected from direct contact with water.
The cost depends on the power rating, daily operating time and electricity tariff. The simple calculation is: power in watts ÷ 1,000 × operating hours × electricity price per kilowatt-hour. With a stated power rating of 0.9 watts, consumption per hour of operation is correspondingly low. For battery-powered models, you will instead incur the cost of replacing the batteries.
Their lifespan depends on factors including LED quality, the power supply, moisture, storage and mechanical stress. A general lifespan cannot therefore be applied to every model. Dry storage, installation without tension and use of the specified power supply can help extend their useful life.
