Buying LED string lights: a guide to choosing the right lights for indoors, balconies, gardens and parties

LED string lights can add a decorative touch to your balcony, living room or gaming room. But when you’re shopping, it’s not just the number of LEDs or the range of colours that matters. Claims such as ‘waterproof’, ‘smart control’ or ‘long run time’ often apply only to specific components and conditions of use.

Check the technical specifications before you buy to avoid common pitfalls:

  • An IP44 rating offers protection against splashing water, but not immersion or prolonged heavy rain.
  • Solar string lights only work reliably if the solar panel receives enough direct sunlight.
  • A smart LED strip usually needs a power socket, an app and a compatible Wi-Fi or Bluetooth system.
  • Many battery-powered models are supplied without batteries, so remember to factor in the extra cost.

The most common pitfalls when buying LED decorative lights

1. Assuming more LEDs means brighter light

A high number of LEDs doesn’t automatically mean brighter or more even lighting. LED spacing, light colour, design and power supply all matter too. For example, a 15.3-metre string light with 150 LEDs spaced 10 centimetres apart spreads the light over a larger area. That may work better for decorative edging than a shorter string with LEDs placed closer together.

2. Not checking exactly what ‘waterproof’ means

When choosing outdoor lighting, check the IP rating. IP44 is designed to protect against splashing water from different directions, so it may be suitable for sheltered areas such as balconies, patios or gardens. However, the product must not be immersed in water. According to the product information, the light string on the VIVREAL solar string lights has an IP65 rating; the solar panel and battery compartment must still not be immersed in water.

For long-term outdoor use, check the cable connections, power supply, control unit and solar panel, as well as the LEDs themselves.

3. Buying smart features without checking compatibility

App control, voice control and music synchronisation are useful, but they depend on having the right setup. Before you buy, check:

  • Does the product support your Wi-Fi band, or only 2.4 GHz?
  • Do you need a particular app?
  • Is voice control compatible with Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple Home or another system?
  • Does music synchronisation work through a microphone or the smartphone app?
  • Is the strip designed for indoor use?

An RGB LED strip with a protective coating may be more resistant to dust and light scuffing. That doesn’t automatically make it suitable for outdoor use.

Technical details to compare

Power supply and ongoing costs

Battery-powered models are easy to hang wherever you like and don’t need a cable running to a socket. However, you’ll need to replace the batteries regularly. The M.TK 15 m Light Tube LED requires three AA batteries, which are not included. The M.TK Hanging LED Starburst Light Firework Lamp uses four AA batteries, also not included.

Solar string lights reduce the need for mains electricity. According to the product information, the VIVREAL model takes around 6 to 8 hours to charge in direct sunlight and provides approximately 8 to 14 hours of light, depending on the weather and charge level. Shade, dirt on the solar panel and short winter days can all affect the actual run time.

Length, LED spacing and installation area

Measure the area you need to cover before placing your order. For railings, trees or window frames, the length and cable routing are key. A string that’s too short will leave gaps, while excess cable can get in the way during installation.

For LED strips, the surface is particularly important. They should be fitted to a dry, clean and preferably smooth surface. The adhesive backing may not stick as well to dusty, rough or damp walls. Sharp bends can damage the conductive tracks.

Light colour and controls

Warm white is often a good choice for subtle Christmas lighting, a dining room or a patio. Cool white at 6500 K has a daylight-like appearance and can stand out more in decorations, along paths or in displays. RGB models offer colour changes and scene modes for gaming rooms, party lighting or different living spaces.

Also check whether the string lights are actually dimmable or simply offer different flashing and colour programmes. These are not the same thing.

Practical tips for installation and care

  1. Prepare the surface: Clean the areas where you’ll apply LED strips to remove dust and grease, then let them dry completely.
  2. Protect cables and plugs: For outdoor lighting, keep connections out of puddles and check the relevant IP rating.
  3. Insert batteries correctly: Don’t mix old and new batteries or different battery types. Remove the batteries if you won’t be using the lights for a long time.
  4. Don’t use LED strips while they’re coiled: Heat can build up, particularly with mains-powered models.
  5. Position the solar panel: Direct sunlight improves charging performance. Regularly remove leaves and dust, and keep the panel out of the shade.

LED string lights FAQs

How long do LED string lights last?

Their actual lifespan depends on the quality of the LEDs, how long they’re used for, heat build-up, batteries and exposure to moisture. Only take a specific lifespan into account if it’s stated in the product details. For outdoor models, sheltered installation can reduce exposure to rain and temperature changes.

How much electricity do LED string lights use?

Consumption depends on the power rating, how long the lights are on and their power source. For mains-powered products, the wattage shown is the key figure. Battery-powered models don’t use mains electricity directly, but you’ll need to replace their batteries. Solar string lights charge their built-in battery via the solar panel; their run time depends on sunlight and weather.

Can I use any LED string lights outdoors?

No. Check the IP rating and the intended area of use. IP44 is generally suitable for splashing water, but not immersion. A strip that isn’t specifically rated for outdoor use should be kept indoors. The power supply, control unit and connections must also be protected from moisture.
