Buying LED Strip Lights: A Guide to Choosing the Right Option for Living Spaces, Cabinets and Vehicles

An LED strip can illuminate a worktop, highlight a shelf or provide decorative lighting around a window. The choice ranges from simple USB-powered LED strips to app-controlled RGB-CCT systems. However, unclear product specifications and misjudged conditions of use often lead to disappointing purchases.

Common pitfalls when buying LED strip lights

1. Adhesive strips do not stick to every surface

A self-adhesive LED strip will usually stick well to dry, smooth and grease-free surfaces. However, the backing may come loose from dusty wood, rough plaster or silicone-containing surfaces. Clean the surface and allow it to dry completely before installation. Additional clips can be useful for long strips or those mounted facing downwards.

2. “Waterproof” does not necessarily mean “suitable for outdoor use”

The level of protection is indicated by the IP rating. A product with IP20 is intended exclusively for dry indoor areas. IP65 provides protection against dust and water jets, but does not automatically mean that an LED strip can be operated permanently underwater. For vehicles, windows or outdoor areas, you must also consider the controller, power supply, connectors and adhesive points.

3. Brightness, power supply and runtime are often underestimated

Many LED strips are powered via USB, but depending on their length they may require a suitable power source. With battery-powered or rechargeable models, operating time depends on brightness, sensor activity and battery capacity. RGB lighting is not automatically suitable as functional task lighting either: for cabinets, kitchen worktops or desks, light colour and brightness are more important than a large number of colour effects.

The most important selection criteria

Length, cutting and installation

Measure the required length before buying and plan the cable routes and connections. An LED strip with marked cut points can be adjusted to the required length. It may only be cut at these points. When installing around corners, observe the permitted bending radius, as sharp bends can damage the tracks and LEDs.

For cabinets and shelving, a narrow LED cabinet light strip or a USB LED light bar is often more practical than a long decorative strip. Magnetic mounts allow you to remove the light later for charging or cleaning.

Light colour and control

  • Warm white is ideal for cosy ambient lighting.
  • Cool white improves visibility in cabinets, hallways and work areas.
  • RGB creates colourful effects, but does not replace neutral functional lighting in every situation.
  • RGBCCT combines RGB colours with an adjustable white tone.
  • A dimmable LED light should allow the brightness to be adjusted continuously or in clearly defined steps.

Depending on the model, control is via a switch, remote control, app or voice assistant. A smart LED strip may also support schedules and scenes. Check whether a Wi-Fi hub is required and whether your preferred smart home system is supported.

Power supply and IP rating

USB models can be operated using a mains adapter, computer or power bank. The adapter is not always included. For power supplies, the voltage and current must match the manufacturer’s specifications.

IP20 is sufficient for dry indoor areas. If an LED strip is used near moisture, check the specifications for the specific model and the position of the power supply. An LED strip with motion sensor should also provide information about its detection range, lighting duration and battery.

LED strip light FAQ

How is an LED strip attached?

Most self-adhesive LED strips are applied to a smooth, dry and clean surface. For longer runs or challenging surfaces, mounting clips, magnets or additional brackets can provide extra support. Plan the position, including the cable exit, before sticking the strip down.

How long does an LED strip last?

The actual service life depends on LED quality, operating time, heat dissipation, power supply and installation. Good ventilation around the power supply and avoiding sharp bends can help ensure reliable operation. With battery-powered models, you should also take battery ageing into account.

Does an LED strip use a lot of electricity?

Power consumption depends mainly on length, LED density, brightness and operating time. A shorter strip at reduced brightness uses correspondingly less energy than a long RGB LED strip running continuously at a high brightness level. For an accurate estimate, the wattage specified for the product and its daily usage time are key.
