Buying LED strips: A guide to choosing the right light colour, smart home features and installation

LED strips are suitable for many areas of the British home: as indirect lighting behind the television, as LED TV backlighting, beneath kitchen wall units or as decorative lighting for gaming and living areas. LED strips with motion sensors can also illuminate cupboards, hallways and shelves without permanent wiring.

The choice may seem straightforward at first glance. In practice, however, unclear information about length, IP rating or controls often leads to unsuitable purchases. Our buying guide explains what to look for before purchasing an LED light strip or LED tape.

Common pitfalls when buying LED strips

1. RGB is confused with RGBIC

A basic RGB LED strip can usually display just one colour across its entire length. With an RGBIC LED strip, on the other hand, several colour zones can be displayed at the same time. This makes effects such as moving lights and colour gradients possible.

The description “16 million colours” alone says little about how the strip will perform in everyday use. Also check whether the product can control individual segments and whether this feature is actually available in the app.

2. Self-adhesive does not automatically mean permanent installation

A self-adhesive LED strip needs a clean, dry and preferably smooth surface. Dust, grease, textured wallpaper or heat can affect adhesion. Before installation, measure the route, unroll the strip fully and test the position.

The tape must not be sharply bent around corners. Some models can only be cut at marked points. Cutting at an unsuitable point can damage the circuit.

3. The IP rating and intended use are overlooked

An indoor LED strip with IP20 is intended for dry rooms and is not protected against water. For kitchens, bathrooms, balconies or patios, the specific IP rating is crucial. A model with IP44 is protected against splashing water and solid foreign objects, but is not suitable for submersion.

A solar string light is a different type of product. It uses a solar panel and rechargeable battery, making it more suitable for gardens, paths or patios than for precise indoor lighting.

Technical parameters you should check

Length, cut points and power supply

Measure the required route, including corners and connections. A 5 m LED strip will not automatically fit every wall or television. For TV backlighting, the recommended screen size must match your own device.

Also pay attention to:

  • Nominal length and possible extensions
  • marked cut points
  • mains power, USB connection or battery
  • required mains voltage and the included power adapter
  • heat dissipation during extended use

A battery-powered LED strip can be installed flexibly, but needs to be recharged regularly. A mains-powered LED tape is better suited to a permanent installation near a socket.

Light colour and dimming function

Neutral or cool white light can be practical for worktops and cupboards. Warm white light of around 2,700 to 3,000 Kelvin is often used for living areas and decorative applications. A dimmable LED strip offers additional flexibility.

With RGBCCT models, you can adjust white tones as well as colours. The Hama model in this selection offers a stated colour-temperature range of 2,700 to 6,500 Kelvin. Check whether the desired light colour is available as a fixed setting, continuously adjustable option or only through preset scenes.

Controls and smart home compatibility

An LED strip with a remote control can be operated independently of an app. Wi-Fi LED strips and LED strips with app control, on the other hand, usually require a Wi-Fi connection, often in the 2.4 GHz band. For smart home users, the supported platforms are also important.

Matter can make integration with compatible systems easier. Nevertheless, check that your existing hub, voice assistant and preferred app work together. Features such as schedules, grouping, music synchronisation and voice control may vary depending on the system.

We have put together a complete, regularly updated list of products that fully meet these strict selection criteria and the safety regulations applicable in the EU.

Plan installation and operation properly

Before installation, the surface should be cleaned and dried completely. With longer LED strips, adequate ventilation around the power supply is important. When switched on, the tape should not remain tightly coiled, as heat can build up.

For outdoor areas, only use products with a suitable, explicitly stated IP rating. An IP44 model must not be submerged. Power supplies, control boxes and plug connections must be positioned according to the manufacturer's instructions.

LED strip FAQ

How long does an LED strip last?

The actual service life depends on LED quality, operating time, heat dissipation, the power supply and installation. A general lifespan figure is therefore of limited value. Follow the manufacturer's specifications and avoid sharp bends, persistently high temperatures and operation with an unsuitable power supply.

How much electricity does an LED strip use?

Consumption depends on the length, power and brightness. A model with a maximum power rating of 24 W uses approximately 0.24 kWh over ten hours at full power. Consumption may be lower when the light is dimmed or segments are switched off. For an accurate estimate, compare the stated wattage with your daily usage time.

Can every LED strip be cut?

No. Only cut LED tape at the cut points marked by the manufacturer. Some TV sets or special extensions are not designed to be cut. The product description and installation instructions will provide further information.
