Choosing LED Window Lighting: What to Consider When It Comes to Light Colour, IP Rating and Installation

LED window lighting can add targeted decoration to a window, wall or entrance area. However, LED window lights, string lights and curtain lights differ considerably in terms of power supply, mounting and intended use. If you choose solely based on price or a high number of LEDs, you may overlook important details.

Common pitfalls when buying

1. Indoor and outdoor use are confused

Not every decorative window light is suitable for damp conditions. A USB LED star with controller may be designed for living rooms, bedrooms or parties, but must not be used on an unprotected outdoor window. Conversely, an LED light net for outdoor use is often more robustly constructed, but still requires secure mounting and a protected power supply.

Look for clear wording such as ‘indoor use only’ or a specified IP rating. IP44, for example, means protection against solid foreign objects larger than 1 millimetre and against splashing water from various directions. The power supply and mains plug may nevertheless require additional protection from rain.

2. Multiple lighting modes do not replace the right light colour

RGB LED window lighting offers colour changes, flashing and fade effects. This is appealing for parties or seasonal decorations, but may not always be suitable for everyday use. For living spaces and subtle Christmas window decorations, warm white window lighting is often easier to integrate into your interior design.

Colour temperature is measured in Kelvin. Warm white in the region of 2,500 to 3,000 Kelvin has a yellowish, decorative appearance. RGB lights, on the other hand, offer a range of colours but do not automatically provide an even warm white. Check whether the light colour is fixed, changeable or exclusively coloured.

3. Installation is underestimated

An LED window string light can be attached using suction cups, adhesive pads, hooks or small brackets. Adhesive solutions may not hold as well on rough, dusty or damp surfaces. With an LED curtain lighting system, you also need to ensure that the width, cable length and position of the connection are suitable for the window.

Before buying, you should measure:

  • Width and height of the area to be decorated
  • Distance to the nearest socket or USB power source
  • Space for the controller, power supply and cable
  • Load-bearing capacity of the mounting points
  • Possible obstructions caused by window handles, curtains or shutters

Key buying criteria for LED window lights

Power supply and running costs

USB models can be powered using a computer, power bank or suitable USB mains adaptor. Check whether an adaptor is included. For mains-powered products, use the supplied power supply if specified by the manufacturer.

Electrical power in watts is the key factor when calculating electricity costs. You can estimate the approximate cost using:

Power in kilowatts × hours of use per day × electricity price × days of use

If the wattage is not included in the product description, clarify it using the technical data sheet or by contacting the seller before buying.

IP rating and safety distances

A decorative indoor window light does not require an outdoor IP rating. In the garden, on a patio or against an exterior wall, however, you should look for a suitable IP marking. This rating applies to the specific product; the power supply, plug and connection components must be assessed separately.

Electrical decorations should not be placed in direct water. Disconnect the lighting from the power supply before cleaning, and position cables so that they are not under tension or creating a trip hazard. Small mounting parts and cables should be kept out of reach of very young children.

Size, number of LEDs and light distribution

A high number of LEDs alone says little about the actual visual effect. The spacing between the light points, the shape of the frame and the size of the illuminated area are more important. A 60-centimetre star, for example, creates a single focal point. A 1 × 1 metre light net distributes the LEDs across a wider area and is suitable for windows, walls, fences or shrubs.

Frequently asked questions about LED window lighting

How can I attach LED window lights without causing damage?

First clean the surface with a dry cloth, and only use adhesive pads, hooks or suction cups suitable for that surface. In rented homes, solutions that can be removed without leaving residue are a sensible choice. The cable should not be trapped in the window sash. Also check whether the manufacturer supplies specific mounting accessories.

How long does LED window lighting last?

The actual service life depends on operating time, heat generation, the power supply and the surrounding environment. Indoor lights should be used in a dry, well-ventilated area. With outdoor products, a protected power connection improves operational safety. Specific service-life details should be taken directly from the relevant technical data sheet.

Does an LED window string light use a lot of electricity?

Compared with many older light sources, LEDs generally require little electrical power. However, you need the wattage of the specific model to make a reliable assessment. If used daily, a timer or switchable USB power source can help prevent unnecessary operating hours.
