Buying model cars: A guide to diecast models, toy cars and collector vehicles

Model cars can be designed for playing, collecting or displaying. However, there are clear differences between a robust toy car for everyday use and a delicate collector’s model. If you choose based only on the vehicle brand or eye-catching packaging, you will often overlook important details.

Three common buying mistakes:

  • Confusing scale with size: A 1:64 scale model is not automatically suitable for every race track. Play areas, display cabinets and dioramas all have different space requirements.
  • Overestimating the metal content: The term diecast model car usually indicates a metal body. The wheels, windows, interior and attachments may still be made from plastic.
  • Collector features are not suitable for children: Opening doors, small accessories, acrylic covers and delicate paintwork are often intended for older users. The age rating is therefore more important than an especially detailed design.

The most important buying criteria for model cars

1. Scale and intended display location

The scale describes the ratio to the original vehicle. 1:64 scale car models are compact and suitable for collections with many vehicles, taking along on the go or for Hot Wheels play worlds. A 1:64 model is considerably smaller than a 1:36 scale car model.

Models in 1:36 scale require more display space, but often offer more clearly visible details such as doors or interiors. Before buying for a display cabinet, check the length of the model. A 1:16 vehicle, such as Bruder vehicles, requires considerably more space again.

2. Materials and moving features

With metal model cars, a body made from zinc alloy or other diecast metal provides greater weight and a solid feel. Plastic parts are not necessarily a disadvantage: on large emergency vehicles, they allow features such as a ladder, loading crane or light-and-sound module.

Pay particular attention to:

  • The material used for the body and attachments
  • Rolling or sprung wheels
  • Opening doors or tailgates
  • Pull-back function
  • Included figures and accessories
  • Display base or acrylic cover for collector’s cars

The features should suit the intended use. For a display cabinet, a clean paint finish is more important than a play function. For children, on the other hand, robust wheels and easy-to-use moving parts may be crucial.

3. Age rating and safety

Toy cars for children aged 3 and over must not contain easily detachable small parts that could pose a choking hazard. For many models, the product information expressly states that they are not suitable for children under 36 months. With collector’s models rated 14+, doors, mirrors, covers and other small parts should not be used as toys for toddlers.

Before buying, also check whether batteries are required. The Bruder MB Sprinter Fire Department vehicle, for example, requires three LR44 button cells, which are not included according to the product information. With battery-operated models, keep the battery compartment and button cells out of the reach of small children.

Volkswagen, police and other collecting categories

If you are specifically looking for a Volkswagen model car, you will find options for different uses: The SIKU VW T5 Special Forces Command is a compact metal-and-plastic model for children aged 3 and over, with an opening tailgate. The 1:64 scale SIKU VW Beetle ADAC combines a metal body with rubber tyres and is also rated for ages 3 and over.

Adult collectors may be interested in the 1:36 scale Volkswagen T1 Bus, a 1987 BMW M3 or a Lamborghini Revuelto, among others. Depending on the version, these models feature opening doors, pull-back drive and an age rating of 14 and over. With police and fire service vehicles, you should also check whether figures, batteries or accessories are actually included in the delivery.

Hot Wheels model cars, McLaren models and other racing car models can also be brought together by scale, series and intended use. For a gift for car enthusiasts, a single display model with a base is often more suitable than a random multi-pack. For younger children, however, a robust vehicle with freely rolling wheels may be the better choice.

FAQs about model cars

Which model cars are suitable for children aged 3 and over?

Suitable models are those whose packaging expressly states an age rating of 3 and over and which do not contain easily detachable small parts. SIKU vehicles and certain Hot Wheels toy cars are listed in the product information as suitable for ages 3 and over. The information provided for the individual listing should be checked before buying.

Which scale is best for a collection?

1:64 is space-saving and suitable for extensive collections, race tracks and dioramas featuring several vehicles. 1:36 offers more visible surface area for details and is better suited to individual display pieces. Large interactive toy vehicles commonly use scales such as 1:16, but they require considerably more storage space.

How do you care for diecast model cars?

Dust can usually be removed with a soft, dry cloth. For models with an acrylic cover, the cover should be cleaned separately. Moisture, direct sunlight and intense heat can damage the paintwork, plastic parts or electronics. For some products, such as the Yamaha-YZF-R1 model, cleaning with a cloth lightly moistened with alcohol and without using water is recommended. The manufacturer’s instructions for the individual product take precedence.
