Buying a Multi-Cooker: A Selection Guide for Small Kitchens, Families and Quick Meals

A multi-cooker can supplement several kitchen appliances or take on individual tasks: soups, rice, pasta, vegetables, stews, hot pot and, depending on its design, grilled dishes or food cooked with hot air. However, the term is not used consistently. An electric cooking pot does not replace an air fryer, and an air fryer is not automatically suitable for soups or rice.

When choosing, therefore, capacity, heating technology, controls and cleaning matter more than the number of advertised programmes. Checking these points before buying helps you avoid an unsuitable purchase and choose an appliance that fits your everyday routine.

Common Multi-Cooker Buying Mistakes

1. Lots of programmes do not automatically mean lots of uses

A machine with ten programmes may still be designed for just one particular cooking method. An air fryer uses circulating hot air and is suitable for chips, vegetables, baked goods or roasting. An electric hot pot or mini cooking pot heats liquids and ingredients directly in the pot. This design is more suitable for soups, noodles or rice.

So check which heating technology is actually used and whether the desired preparation method is covered in the instructions. A slow cooker also operates at a low temperature and is not designed for quickly searing food.

2. The stated litre capacity does not always indicate the usable volume

With a cooking pot, the container usually must not be filled completely. Soups, rice and foods that foam need a safety margin. A 2.0-litre model is therefore not automatically suitable for preparing two litres of finished food.

For single people and students, 1.0 to 1.6 litres is often sufficient. Couples and small households can look at 2.0 to 2.6 litres. Families may benefit from larger containers of around 5 litres or more, depending on the dish, or from an air fryer with multiple cooking chambers.

3. Coatings and cleaning are often underestimated

A non-stick coating can make cleaning easier, but it requires suitable kitchen utensils. Metal cutlery or abrasive cleaning products can damage the surface. The appliance body, power cable and plug must not be immersed in water either.

Look for removable inner pots, baskets or grill plates. Dishwasher-safe parts are convenient, but this must be expressly stated in the product description or operating instructions.

Important Parameters to Check Before Buying

Heating Power and Temperature Control

The wattage indicates electrical power, not cooking speed directly. A 600-watt mini cooking pot is designed for small portions, while a 2,000-watt appliance, such as an induction hob, can heat water more quickly. However, higher power also means greater electricity consumption while the appliance is running.

A multi-stage temperature or power control is useful. Two settings are enough for noodles, soup and hot pot. Several settings are helpful if you also want to sear, simmer or cook food slowly.

With an induction hob, the cookware must be magnetic. Aluminium or ceramic pots without a magnetic base will not work. An electric grill, on the other hand, requires a stable, heat-resistant surface and sufficient clearance from walls and flammable materials.

Size, Shape and Storage Space

Measure the available worktop and cupboard space before ordering. Also allow room for the cable, lid and heat dissipation. An air fryer should not be placed directly against a wall if this would obstruct the air outlet.

A mini cooking pot with a 1.0-litre capacity fits into small kitchens and is suitable for individual portions. A 9-litre air fryer with two chambers, by contrast, needs more worktop space but can prepare two dishes separately. For family meals, a 5.7-litre multi-cooker with pressure-cooking and slow-cooking functions offers a different solution from a compact electric hot pot.

Safety and Ease of Use

Look for automatic switch-off, overheat or dry-boil protection and heat-insulated handles. With appliances that produce steam, the lid and steam outlet must be safe and easy to operate. A child lock can be useful on an induction hob, but it does not replace supervising children.

Before using the appliance, read the German operating instructions, the permitted filling level and the cleaning guidance. An appliance with a rotary control is often straightforward to use, while touch controls can provide additional programmes and make the surface easier to clean.

Running Costs and Energy-Efficient Cooking

A multi-cooker uses electricity according to its power rating and running time. A 1,000-watt appliance uses approximately 1.0 kilowatt-hour when operated for one hour. The actual cost depends on your individual electricity tariff and on whether the appliance operates continuously at full power.

For energy-efficient cooking, short heating times, suitable portion sizes and a lid that minimises heat loss are important. Do not compare the required cooking time based on wattage alone. A small pot may use less energy for a single portion than a large hob pan, while a larger multi-cooker may be more practical for several portions.

Multi-Cooker FAQs

What can you cook in a multi-cooker?

That depends on the design. An electric cooking pot is generally suitable for rice, noodles, soups, vegetables and hot pot. A multi-cooker may also steam, sear, slow-cook or, depending on the model, cook under pressure. An air fryer is designed for hot-air dishes, baking and roasting. The specific functions should be confirmed in the operating instructions.

How long does a multi-cooker last?

There is no standard service life. It depends on how often the appliance is used, how it is cleaned and stored, and the condition of the cable, heating surface and coating. With coated pots, use wooden, plastic or silicone utensils and allow the appliance to cool completely before cleaning.

Is a multi-cooker cheaper to run than a cooker?

That depends on the dish, portion size, power consumption and electricity tariff. For individual portions or short cooking times, a small electric pot can be practical. For larger quantities, a standard cooker or larger multi-cooker may be more suitable. The key is to compare the wattage with the actual operating time.
