Buying a night light: Which features make sense for children's rooms, hallways and bedrooms

A night light should provide orientation without unnecessarily brightening the room. However, when choosing one, many shoppers look first at the design, colours or a low price. This can mean important features are easily overlooked: a sensor may respond too late, the battery may not last through the night or the light may be much cooler and brighter than expected.

For parents and families in Germany, three common purchasing misconceptions are therefore particularly relevant:

  • “Automatic” does not always mean motion detection: A night light with a dusk sensor switches on when it gets dark, while a night light with a motion sensor is activated only when movement is detected. Both functions serve different purposes.
  • A low wattage does not describe the light output on its own: Actual brightness also depends on lumens, beam angle and colour temperature.
  • Decorative children's lamps are not automatically suitable for unsupervised play: Materials such as silicone or plastic may feel pleasant to touch. Even so, guidance on water, heat, power supply and recommended age remains essential.

The most important buying criteria for a night light

1. Check the sensor type and automatic switch-off

A night light with a dusk sensor responds to the ambient light level. For example, it switches on when the room becomes dark and off again during the day. This solution is suitable for hallways, stair landings or sockets near a child's room when you want a subtle guiding light to remain on automatically.

A night light with a motion sensor, on the other hand, lights up only when movement is detected. According to the product details, the AIGOTECH NL01 uses a PIR sensor with a range of up to 7 metres and a detection angle of 120 degrees. These models can be practical for moving around at night, but should be positioned so that furniture or doors do not block the sensor.

Also check the switch-off time. According to the product information, the GRIFEMA model with motion and dusk sensors stops illuminating after 60 seconds without any further movement. That may be sufficient for a short trip to the bathroom or stairs.

2. Colour temperature, lumens and dimming levels

Colour temperature is measured in Kelvin:

  • 2700 to 3000 K: warm white and often pleasant for bedrooms, children's rooms or hallways.
  • 6500 K: a noticeably cooler white, as used by the Aigostar plug-in night light with dusk sensor.
  • RGB: multiple colours and effects, more suited to ambient lighting than discreet orientation.

Brightness is measured in lumens. A light with 8 to 20 lumens is generally designed to provide gentle illumination along a route, while decorative lights can have a different visual effect depending on their design. Dimming levels make it easier to adjust the light to its intended location. According to the product description, the GRIFEMA night light offers five brightness levels, while another 2-piece set features continuous dimming from 10 to 100 per cent.

3. Power supply and positioning

A plug-in night light requires neither battery changes nor charging time. However, it remains tied to a particular socket. In narrow hallways, check whether the housing will cover neighbouring sockets.

A rechargeable night light can be used more flexibly in a child's room, bedroom or hallway. The VIVREAL A046 charges via USB-C, and its stated battery capacity is 1200 mAh. Battery life is specified as up to six hours at maximum brightness. Actual operating time depends on the selected brightness level.

Special precautions apply in bathrooms or areas next to sinks. According to the product details, several of the products mentioned here are intended exclusively for indoor use and are classified as IP20. They are therefore not designed to withstand splashes. A night light must also not be covered, dismantled or operated near easily flammable textiles.

Frequently asked questions about night lights

How much electricity does an LED night light use?

Consumption depends on the power rating and operating time. A 0.5-watt model uses 0.5 kWh over 1,000 operating hours in theory. Sensor operation can reduce actual consumption because the light does not remain switched on continuously. For running costs, wattage, sensor control and daily usage time are therefore the key factors.

Is a night light with a motion sensor suitable for a child's room?

It can be a sensible choice if light is needed only when getting up or entering the room. Choose a low brightness setting and warm-white light wherever possible. With young children, the device should be positioned so that the cable, socket and housing do not become playthings. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for use and cleaning.

How long does an LED night light last?

The stated service life varies depending on the model. For example, the Aigostar plug-in night light with dusk sensor is rated at 25,000 hours, while the AIGOTECH NL01 is rated at 10,000 hours. For rechargeable models, battery ageing is also relevant. Charging cycles, heat, maximum brightness and frequency of use all affect how long the battery remains usable in everyday conditions.
