Who are these solutions for?

Online players with a preferred platform

You want to play against friends or other online players on a real board, and need a verified connection to your platform and smartphone or computer. The specific app connection matters more than a general platform logo. MILLENNIUM and Chessconnect document different options for specific models.

Players who want automated moves

You want to move your own pieces while seeing your opponent’s moves appear automatically on the board. This requires motorised piece movement – not just automatic move detection or LED indicators. Chessnut lists this as a manufacturer feature for Move.

Players with an existing DGT setup

You own a traditional DGT e-board or want to combine electronic pieces, a computer connection and a separate move display. You’ll need to choose a compatible board, software and, if required, chess clock as a complete setup; DGT and Chessconnect document specific connection options.

What should you look for when buying?

Start by choosing your platform connection, then decide how you want your opponent’s moves displayed, and finally check the piece recognition and device connections you need.

What to consider What to look for Who it matters most to
Platform access Check the model, app and platform together. For Lichess, check the designated Board API access and the time controls supported. If I want to play on my preferred platform and follow its connection rules, specific app support matters. Around 36% of consumers prioritise platform access.
Opponent’s moves Check whether the pieces move automatically, moves are indicated by LEDs or are shown as notation. If I don’t want to move my opponent’s pieces myself, I need motorised movement rather than a simple display. Around 29% of consumers prioritise how their opponent’s moves are shown.
Piece recognition Check which pieces are recognised and how captures and changes to the position are handled. If I want to move pieces on the board without also entering moves on screen, reliable detection matters to me. Around 21% of consumers prioritise ease of use and move recognition.
Devices and accessories Check the data connection, operating system and app, as well as the required set of pieces and, if needed, a clock. If I want to keep using my existing devices or add to a traditional board setup, the whole configuration needs to work together. Around 14% of consumers prioritise their device setup.

Common misconceptions

  • A platform logo doesn’t automatically mean there’s a compatible connection

With Lichess, the way your e-board connects is what matters. The platform distinguishes between hardware being advertised and the Board API access actually being used.

Check the specific connection method and authorisation before choosing a model or app.

Using an intermediary app may mean an extra installation and setup step.

  • Automatic move detection isn’t the same as automatic movement

A board may detect your moves or show your opponent’s moves with LEDs without moving the pieces itself. Chessnut, by contrast, lists motorised piece bases as a feature of Move.

Before you buy, decide whether you want to move your opponent’s pieces yourself or expect them to move automatically.

  • Don’t assume USB connectivity or clock compatibility

According to DGT, the USB-C port on the DGT Pegasus is for charging only and doesn’t transfer moves. The manufacturer also states that a DGT3000 cannot be connected.

Check that data can be transferred and accessories are compatible with the exact model.

  • A traditional e-board isn’t automatically a complete online chess set

The DGT USB e-board manual requires compatible electronic pieces. Whether you can also display moves separately depends on the software configuration you use.

Check what’s included and only budget for accessories that your chosen software setup actually needs.

Depending on your setup, you may need compatible electronic pieces and additional connection or display components.

Key brands at a glance

MILLENNIUM

The eONE M841 is particularly relevant for online games. Other MILLENNIUM boards may need a separate M822 ChessLink module.

  • MILLENNIUM lists USB, Bluetooth and 81 LEDs for the eONE. The documented apps and platforms vary by device.
  • Support isn’t universal across every app or model, so check the specific combination of board, app and device.

DGT

DGT offers a mobile Bluetooth connection with Pegasus, as well as traditional USB e-boards for configurable computer and display setups.

  • DGT documents LED rings on Pegasus for displaying moves. The manual also describes how traditional e-boards can show an opponent’s moves with compatible software setups.
  • Pegasus doesn’t transfer data over USB-C and isn’t compatible with the DGT3000. According to its developer, Chessconnect’s iOS support is limited to Pegasus.

Chessnut

Air is a sensor-based board with LED indicators; according to Chessnut, Move adds motorised piece movement.

  • Chessnut says Air can recognise piece type and colour. Chessconnect documents Bluetooth or USB connections for Air and Pro.
  • In its list dated 22 December 2025, Lichess included Chessnut Yihu among the e-boards that don’t use the official Board API. The list doesn’t distinguish between models or firmware, so check access for your specific setup.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell whether an e-board uses the designated Lichess access?

The authorisation should show the permission “Play games with the board API”, or board:play. Lichess warns that accounts may be suspended for using unauthorised e-board access; this platform rule isn’t a German legal approval requirement.

Can I play any Lichess time control with an e-board?

No. The options listed by Lichess depend on the type of game. Rapid, Classical and Correspondence are available; Blitz is intended for certain direct challenges, games against AI and tournament challenges. The app you use may also limit the options available.

Can I use an engine or hints when playing online against people?

On Lichess, you mustn’t use chess software to help you choose moves against human opponents. Turn off analysis and hint features for these games; the rule applies regardless of your board model.

Which online connections are documented for the MILLENNIUM eONE?

MILLENNIUM lists ChessLink for Lichess on Android and iOS, as well as the Chess.com app on Android. Chessconnect documents access through an extension for Windows and Mac, and an app for Android and iOS. According to Chessconnect, the eONE M841 doesn’t need a separate M822 adapter.

Does the DGT Pegasus need a computer or chess clock?

The manufacturer’s documented setup connects Pegasus via Bluetooth to an Android or Apple mobile device. USB-C is for charging only, and a DGT3000 cannot be connected. For Chess.com, the German retailer lists a native Android app; Chessconnect documents its own Pegasus connection.
