To find the right jacket, it's helpful to know a few basic technical properties. These three points provide a solid basis for your selection.
Two of the most important metrics for a technical jacket are its waterproofness and breathability.
A good rain jacket that is waterproof and breathable thus offers protection from external moisture while preventing excessive sweating inside.
The choice of material largely depends on the intended use.
Often, it's the small details that determine the comfort and functionality of a jacket. Look for features such as:

A hardshell jacket is primarily designed for weather protection. It is completely waterproof, windproof, and very durable. A softshell jacket, on the other hand, is more flexible, significantly more breathable, and only water-repellent. It is better suited for intense activity in more stable weather, while the hardshell is indispensable in rain and storms.
Always follow the manufacturer's care label. In general: close all zippers and Velcro fasteners before washing. Use a special detergent for technical apparel and avoid fabric softener, as it can clog the pores of the membrane. To reactivate the water-repellent property of the outer layer (DWR finish), the jacket can be treated in a dryer at a low temperature or with an iron after washing. If water no longer beads off, the DWR finish should be renewed.
Breathability refers to a fabric's ability to allow water vapour (sweat) to pass from the inside to the outside. This is crucial to avoid getting wet from the inside during physical exertion. High breathability ensures a dry and comfortable microclimate by preventing heat build-up and effectively wicking away moisture.
