Choosing an Outdoor LED String Light: Key Criteria and Tailored Recommendations

An outdoor LED string light can beautifully illuminate your balcony, terrace, garden or entrance area. However, when buying one, it’s not just about the number of LEDs and the light colour. The power supply, ingress protection rating, cable length and intended installation are also crucial. Overlook these points, and you might end up with a string light that’s too short for where you want it, not sufficiently protected against moisture, or uses far more batteries than you expected.

Common Buying Pitfalls for an Outdoor String Light

1. “Waterproof” doesn’t always mean waterproof

Many listings use the term waterproof string light, even though the product only offers protection against splashing water. The level of protection is indicated by the IP rating:

  • IP44: Protection against solid objects larger than 1 mm and against splashing water from any direction.
  • IP65: Dust-tight and protected against water jets. This does not mean the string light can be submerged.
  • The battery compartment or mains connector may have a lower protection rating than the LED cable itself.

For a covered balcony, IP44 can be sufficient. If you’re mounting a string light for garden and balcony out in the open, a higher protection rating makes sense, provided the manufacturer explicitly states it’s suitable for that use. Connections should always be protected from standing water.

2. Number of LEDs doesn’t replace sufficient length

A high LED count sounds impressive at first, but it tells you little about the actual coverage. Check the following:

  • Total length of the string light
  • Length of the connecting cable
  • Spacing between the LEDs
  • Number of individual strands or hanging points
  • Required fixing points

A string with 100 LEDs spread over roughly 10 metres distributes light very differently from one with 100 LEDs over 4 metres. For a hedge, railing or pergola, the mounting area matters more than the sheer number of LEDs.

3. Light colour and modes are often misjudged

Warm white LED string lights typically fall in the range of around 2,700 to 3,000 Kelvin and appear yellowish to warm. A version with 6,500 Kelvin, on the other hand, looks noticeably cooler and more like daylight. For a cosy terrace, a wedding or a party, warm white is often preferred; for eye-catching outdoor Christmas lights, multi-coloured or dynamic light changes can be more suitable.

Multiple modes are handy if you have different scenarios in mind. However, they don’t automatically improve the light quality. Check whether there is a memory function and whether the brightness can actually be dimmed.

The Most Important Buying Criteria

Power supply: battery, solar or mains connection

A battery-operated string light can be used flexibly in places without a power socket. Check whether batteries are included and how many are needed. If you use it for several hours a day, replacement batteries can become an ongoing cost.

A solar string light needs direct sunlight on the solar panel. In the shade, during short daylight hours or in cloudy weather, the lighting duration may be shorter. The stated run time should therefore be taken as a weather-dependent guideline.

Mains-powered models are better suited to permanent installations. For outdoor areas, the socket, power supply and connection must be suitably protected and designed for outdoor use.

Protection rating and installation location

The IP rating should match the actual installation location. A string light under a roof overhang is less exposed to rain than one strung freely across a lawn. Secure the cable so that no strain is placed on the connection. Cables should not be routed over sharp edges and should be stored dry when not in use for long periods.

Light colour, brightness and lighting modes

For subtle decoration, warm white LEDs or small star and teardrop shapes work well. For larger areas, longer strings with a denser LED arrangement can be more practical. A dimmable string light gives you extra control over brightness, provided compatibility with the specific dimmer or controller is stated.

For events, also check whether the timer or memory function works reliably after switching on. This reduces repeated adjustments, but doesn’t replace secure installation.

FAQ about Outdoor LED String Lights

How long does an LED string light last outdoors?

The lifespan depends on the LED components, cable quality, switching cycles, moisture and storage. Without a manufacturer’s specification, it’s impossible to give a reliable guarantee. Remove the string light during storms or store it dry when not in season. Battery models should be stored without batteries inserted to prevent leakage.

Which LED string light is suitable for a balcony?

For a balcony, a compact battery-operated string light, a solar string light in a sunny spot, or a short mains-powered version are all practical options. For a covered railing, IP44 may be sufficient, provided the connection and battery compartment stay dry. Measure the railing before buying and also account for the cable length to the control panel.

Does an LED string light use a lot of electricity?

Compared to many older types of bulb, LEDs generally require very little electrical power. The actual running costs depend on the wattage, operating hours and your electricity tariff. With battery models, you have the cost of batteries instead of electricity. With solar products, there’s no mains power needed, but the lighting duration depends on daylight and weather conditions.
