Buy outdoor LED string lights: a buying guide for gardens, balconies and patios

Outdoor LED string lights can illuminate paths, railings, trees or seating areas decoratively. However, the number of LEDs is not the only factor that matters when buying. Inadequate water protection, an impractical power supply or a lead that is too short can prevent the lighting from working at the intended location.

This buying guide from the Joybuy Product Recommendation Officer helps you assess technical specifications correctly and choose outdoor string lights to suit a balcony, garden, patio, Christmas tree or event.

Common buying mistakes with outdoor LED string lights

1. “Waterproof” does not automatically mean suitable for every type of weather

The IP44 protection rating protects against splashing water from various directions. It is therefore suitable for sheltered outdoor areas such as covered patios, balconies or decorative installations. However, an IP44 light must not be immersed in water. Battery compartments, power supplies and plug connections must also be protected from standing water.

IP65 offers a higher level of protection against dust and water jets. Nevertheless, the solar panel or light unit should not be submerged. The specific manufacturer’s information remains decisive.

2. Length alone says little about the actual coverage

When choosing Christmas string lights or decorative string lights for gardens and patios, buyers should pay attention to several measurements:

  • Total length including or excluding the lead
  • Distance between the LEDs
  • Number of LEDs or bulbs
  • Number and spacing of hanging strands
  • Available length to the socket or solar panel

An 8.3-metre string with 100 LEDs distributes light differently from a 20-metre string with 23 larger G40 bulbs. A closer LED arrangement is often more practical for a tree, while party lighting along a fence can accommodate larger gaps.

3. Light colour and power supply are often considered too late

A warm white string light of around 3000 K creates a yellowish, warm glow. By contrast, 6500 K appears noticeably cooler and more like daylight. Warm white light is often chosen for Christmas trees, weddings and seating areas; cool white can be suitable for creating clear outlines along paths or on façades.

There are three typical power supply options:

  • Battery-powered string lights: flexible to position, but require regular battery changes.
  • Solar garden string lights: independent of a socket, but reliant on direct sunlight and the weather.
  • Mains-powered version: suitable for longer operating times, but requires an accessible and protected socket.

Technical parameters to check before buying

Protection rating for the intended location

The IP44 or IP65 rating is only meaningful if it suits the installation. IP44 may be sufficient for a sheltered balcony. For a freestanding garden installation, a higher protection rating is often advisable. The power supply and battery box may have a different protection rating from the LED string itself.

Number of LEDs, light colour and bulb shape

More LEDs do not automatically mean greater brightness. LED spacing, design, light colour and orientation are also important. Star-shaped covers are ideal for decorative accents, while larger G40 bulbs create visible points of light along pergolas or fences. Star string lights are particularly well suited to Christmas decorations, weddings and children’s bedrooms.

Lighting modes, timer and memory function

Multiple modes can switch between steady light, flashing effects, waves or slow fading. On certain models, a memory function saves the last selected setting. A timer is particularly useful with battery-powered string lights, as the lighting does not need to remain switched on continuously.

Practical tips for installation and use

  • Check the string for damaged cables, loose sockets or cracks before installation.
  • Position power supplies and battery boxes so that water cannot collect in them.
  • Do not install outdoor lighting near naked flames or strong sources of heat.
  • Remove batteries before storing the lights for an extended period to prevent leakage.
  • Do not bend the cables sharply or cover the lights with fabric or other materials.
  • For mains-powered products, use a suitable, protected outdoor socket.

Frequently asked questions about outdoor LED string lights

Can outdoor LED string lights be left out in the rain?

This depends on the stated protection rating. IP44 is suitable for splashing water, but not for immersion. IP65 provides greater protection against water jets; even in this case, the power supply, battery box or solar panel must not be placed completely in water.

How long do LED string lights last?

The lifespan depends, among other things, on operating time, humidity, temperature, mechanical stress and the quality of the power supply. Without specific manufacturer’s data, it is not possible to provide a reliable general estimate. Regular visual checks and dry storage when not in use can help extend the practical service life.

How much does it cost to run LED string lights?

With battery-powered models, costs arise from replacing or recharging the batteries. Solar models require sunlight and normally do not consume mains electricity during operation. With mains-powered lights, the LED wattage and daily operating time affect the cost. A timer can limit operating time and reduce consumption.
