Outdoor LED string lights can add carefully placed accents to gardens, balconies, terraces or patios. When buying, however, it is not just the number of LEDs and the colour of the light that matter. Unclear protection ratings, leads that are too short or an unsuitable power supply often mean that the lighting is not suitable for its intended location in everyday use.
This buying guide from the Joybuy Product Recommendation Officer explains which details really matter and which models are suitable for different uses.
The term waterproof string lights is not very informative without a specific IP rating. String lights with IP44 are protected against solid foreign objects above a certain size and against splashing water from various directions. However, they are not designed to be immersed in water.
IP65 also provides protection against dust and water jets. The same applies here: the product must not be submerged. With solar lights for the garden, the solar panel and battery compartment must also be assessed separately, as these components do not always have the same protection as the LED cable.
Solar string lights with lots of LEDs can cover a larger area, but the spacing between the lights affects the overall appearance. Closer LED spacing is suitable for trees or delicate decorations. For LED string lights in the garden or along a railing, wider spacing can create a more even line.
It is therefore worth checking:
Battery-powered string lights can be used flexibly on balconies, terraces or at parties. However, the batteries need to be replaced regularly. Solar string lights, on the other hand, need the panel to be positioned somewhere with as much sunlight as possible. Shade from walls, trees or roofing can reduce charging performance.
A timer string light and string lights with different lighting modes are practical if you do not want to adjust the lighting manually every time. A memory function can save the last setting selected. With permanently installed outdoor Christmas lights, the cable routing should also be planned to prevent trip hazards.
IP44 may be sufficient for a sheltered balcony or covered terrace, provided the manufacturer’s specifications expressly permit use in the intended outdoor area. For areas fully exposed to the weather, IP65 is often more suitable. The protection rating does not automatically apply to every component. The battery box, mains plug and solar panel must be protected in accordance with their respective instructions.
Measure the area before buying and allow extra length for curves, fixing points and the lead. A 5-metre string with 50 LEDs is suitable for smaller decorations. Longer systems with more light sources may be suitable for hedges, larger terraces or event spaces.
Use suitable clips or cable ties for installation and avoid sharp bends. Copper-wire string lights should not be repeatedly bent sharply.
Warm white is understated in many outdoor areas and works well around seating areas or as decorative string lights for balconies and terraces. Multicolour models are more suitable for parties, seasonal decorations or outdoor Christmas lighting.
With solar products, charging and lighting times depend on the weather. Figures such as “8 to 14 hours” or “up to 12 hours” should therefore be understood as manufacturer values under certain conditions, rather than a fixed daily operating time.
Why this product suits this profile: These battery-powered string lights are suitable for smaller balconies, indoor areas and sheltered outdoor spaces where there is no socket nearby.
The specifications clearly state 5 m, 50 LEDs, IP44, eight lighting modes, a timer and a memory function. The battery box must not be submerged in water.
Three AA batteries, 8 modes, a timer and warm white light for smaller decorative areas.
Why this product suits this profile: These garden solar lights combine a longer string with IP65 protection and an integrated lithium battery, making them suitable for areas fully exposed to the weather and with sufficient daylight.
The IP65 protection rating, 4–6-hour charging time and stated maximum lighting time of up to 12 hours are clearly specified. The panel needs to be positioned somewhere with suitable sunlight.
10 m string length, 160 LEDs, warm white light, eight modes and a 1,200 mAh lithium battery.
Why this product suits this profile: Two flexible copper-wire strings, each with 80 LEDs, can be arranged around plants, railings, windows or decorations.
IP65 and the guidance on protecting the solar panel and battery compartment make it clear that splash resistance is not the same as protection against immersion.
Two strings, eight lighting modes with a memory function, multicolour light and a stated lighting time of 8–14 hours depending on weather conditions.
Why this product suits this profile: These long outdoor lights are designed for larger terraces, gardens, parties, weddings or event spaces.
The 45 m length, IP65 rating, replaceable light sources and the permitted connection of up to 500 light sources provide specific information for planning.
75 G40 LED light sources, warm white light, dimmable design, replaceable light sources and the option to connect multiple strings for larger areas.
We have put together a complete, regularly updated list of products that fully meet these strict selection criteria and the safety regulations applicable in the EU.
This depends on the stated protection rating and the manufacturer’s specifications. IP65 models are protected against dust and water jets, but not automatically against immersion. The battery box, plug and solar panel must also be positioned in accordance with the instructions.
Their service life depends on the LED components, rechargeable battery or batteries, weather conditions, installation and care. One model, for example, is specified as lasting 15,000 operating hours. This figure describes the intended operating time of the LEDs and should not be confused with a guaranteed total service life for the complete system.
During normal operation, solar string lights draw their energy from the integrated rechargeable battery, which is charged via the panel during the day. The actual lighting time depends on sunlight, temperature, charge level and the selected lighting mode. For shaded locations, a battery-powered model may be more practical.
