An outdoor LED string light can add decorative illumination to a balcony, patio, fence or garden. However, product images and general advertising claims do not always lead to the right purchase decision. Technical details such as IP rating, power supply, light colour, cable length and installation location are what really matter.
If you focus only on the number of LEDs or a low price, you can easily overlook important limitations. The following criteria will help you rule out unsuitable products and choose string lights for your garden or balcony that match your intended use.
An IP44 string light is protected against solid foreign objects measuring 1 millimetre or more, as well as splashing water from different directions. However, this does not mean that the power supply, battery compartment or solar components can be left in the rain permanently. Pools of water and submersion must still be avoided.
An IP65 solar string light offers greater protection against dust and water jets. Even so, it is not designed to be submerged. With mains-powered products, the plug must also be protected from direct moisture.
A high number of LEDs does not automatically guarantee even illumination. Check the distance between the light sources and the actual illuminated length. An extension cable does not count towards the LED length. A greater total length may be useful for a fence or house façade, while a small net light can be used to target a bush or section of wall.
A battery-powered string light is suitable for areas without a socket, but it involves ongoing costs and requires a well-protected battery compartment. A solar string light depends on direct sunlight and weather conditions. Mains-powered models provide a constant power supply, but require a suitable outdoor socket and a protected connection.
For a waterproof LED string light, you should check the IP rating of the complete product and the information provided for the power supply. With IP44, the light elements can be exposed to splashing water. Nevertheless, the connection should be positioned under an overhang, inside a protected outdoor box or in another comparably dry location.
With solar-powered models, the panel should be positioned where it receives several hours of direct sunlight. The stated illumination time depends on the weather and is not a fixed value for every season.
Depending on the model, a string light with 8 modes can offer steady light, flashing, wave or fade effects, for example. A string light with a memory function saves the last selected mode. This is useful if the lighting is used regularly and you do not want to set it again every time you switch it on.
Also check whether batteries are included. Several M.TK models require three AA batteries, which are not included according to the product information.
Why this product suits this profile: This battery-powered string light is designed for decorative applications where there is no fixed socket, and provides warm white light for balconies, gardens, parties or Christmas decorations.
The specifications state a total length of 10.3 metres, 100 LEDs, 3 AA batteries and IP44. This makes it possible to assess the coverage, battery requirements and suitable location in advance.
3000 Kelvin, 8 modes, memory function, dimmable brightness according to the product description, plus a 0.3-metre connection cable.
Why this product suits this profile: This compact LED net light is designed to illuminate even surfaces such as bushes, fences, walls or small garden areas, providing warm white light across a defined net size.
The 1 x 1-metre coverage prevents an inaccurate assessment of the area illuminated. The IP44 rating, mounting hooks and information about the protected power supply make the usage limits clear.
96 LEDs with 2500 Kelvin, 9 lighting modes, memory function, a 3-metre connection cable and included fixing materials.
Why this product suits this profile: Two flexible solar string lights, each measuring 12 metres, are suitable for gardens, patios, balconies and seasonal decorations without a cable running to a socket.
The product data states a charging time of 6 to 8 hours, a weather-dependent illumination time of 8 to 14 hours and IP65. Even so, the solar panel must not be submerged.
2 sets with 120 LEDs each, 8 modes plus a memory function, flexible copper wires and automatic on/off switching according to the product information.
For a larger area, 11.2 metres with 140 cool white LEDs or 14.7 metres with 180 LEDs may be suitable. Both M.TK models run on three AA batteries, offer 8 modes, a memory function and IP44. The cool white colour temperature of 6,500 Kelvin is better suited to crisp contours and large-scale outdoor Christmas lighting.
For indoor spaces such as living rooms, kitchens or bedrooms, the 5-metre RGB LED Strip is an option. It features 150 LEDs, a remote control, dimming function and a 24-volt power supply. The IP20 rating rules out permanent outdoor use. An LED light tube or RGB strip should therefore only be used when its IP rating is expressly suitable for the intended installation location.
We have put together a complete, regularly updated list of products that fully meet these strict selection criteria and the safety regulations applicable in the EU.
This depends on the stated IP rating and the manufacturer’s instructions. IP44 models are suitable for splashing water, but should not be left in standing water. Power supplies and plug connections require additional protection. Before severe frost, storms or a prolonged period of non-use, it is advisable to take the lights down.
LEDs generally use little energy compared with traditional light sources. Battery-powered models involve the cost of regularly replacing the AA batteries. Solar products do not incur electricity costs for charging, but their illumination time depends on sunlight and the condition of the rechargeable battery.
Use suitable hooks, clips or the supplied fittings. The cable should not be under tension or rub against sharp edges. With a net light, spread the area out fully first and then secure it evenly. Before installation, check that the connection will remain dry and accessible.
