Outdoor LED string lights can add decorative lighting to façades, balconies, pergolas and trees. But choosing the right set involves more than counting the LEDs or looking at product photos. Unclear IP ratings, leads that are too short and unsuitable light colours can all lead to disappointing purchases.
Three things are particularly likely to cause problems with outdoor lighting:
Before choosing string lights for your patio or garden, measure the area you want to illuminate. For hanging lights, the distance between fixing points is important too. Meteor Shower string lights with several vertical tubes create a falling-light effect and are better suited to façades, trees or larger decorative displays. Classic G40 string lights with individual bulbs, on the other hand, work well along railings, pergolas and outdoor areas at cafés.
An LED curtain light is usually attached to a wall, window or canopy. An LED garden net light can be draped over bushes, small shrubs or decorative areas. Before buying, check that the light string length, lead and fixing materials are all suitable for your setup.
The IP44 rating means protection against solid objects above a certain size and splashing water. It is suitable for many covered outdoor areas, provided that plugs and the power supply are kept protected. IP65 offers greater protection against dust and water jets, so it may be more suitable for installations exposed to the elements.

Dimmable string lights offer greater flexibility in seating areas, at celebrations or in hospitality venues. On some models, a memory function saves the last light setting you selected. Depending on the product, smart string lights may offer app control, music synchronisation, voice control or integration with a smart home system. Before buying, check Wi-Fi compatibility, suitability for outdoor use and the power supply required.
Why it suits this need: This compact set, measuring 5 × 0.3 m, is ideal for smaller balconies, window areas or targeted outdoor Christmas decorations.
The stated coverage area, eight hanging points and 70 cm spacing make it easier to plan the installation than relying on the LED count alone.
192 LEDs and a 6 W power supply. Warm white? This model actually emits white light at 6,500 Kelvin, and has a memory function and IP44 protection.
Why it suits this need: This long string features 75 replaceable G40 LED bulbs and is designed for patios, gardens, hospitality venues and events.
The 45 m length and IP65 rating are clearly stated, making it easier to plan for open outdoor areas than with a product that gives no specific coverage or protection details.
Warm white light, dimmable operation, replaceable bulbs and the option to connect up to 500 bulbs in total.
Why it suits this need: This 10 × 0.5 m arrangement, with 15 hanging points, is ideal for larger façades, retail spaces or event decorations.
The 5 m cable length, 70 cm spacing and IP44 rating are all specified, so you can plan your setup using more than just the product photos.
720 warm white LEDs at 3,000 Kelvin, a 9 W power supply and a memory function that saves the last lighting mode selected.
Why it suits this need: This compact light net with 96 warm white LEDs is designed for bushes, fences, walls and smaller garden areas.
The fixed 1 × 1 m net size helps you avoid overestimating the coverage you need when placing your order.
Nine lighting modes, a memory function, a 3 m lead, fixing hooks and IP44 protection. The net emits warm white light at 2,500 Kelvin.
We’ve put together a complete, regularly updated list of products that meet these strict selection criteria and fully comply with the safety regulations in force in the EU.
Attach the string lights using suitable hooks, clips or the supplied fixing materials. Cables must not be under tension or rub against sharp edges. For IP44 products, take particular care to protect the power supply and plug connections from direct rain.
Their actual lifespan depends on how long they are used, moisture, temperature, physical strain and the quality of the cables and connections. Models with replaceable bulbs can sometimes still be used if one bulb fails. Before each season, check for cracks, loose connections and damaged insulation.
Consumption depends on the power rating, how long the lights are on and the number of LEDs. A product with a 9 W power supply would use 0.09 kWh over ten hours of operation, assuming it consistently draws the stated power. A timer, dimming function or shorter daily operating time can help reduce energy use further.
