The right outdoor string lights can add decorative lighting to a balcony, patio, garden, fence or event space. But product information can sound more reassuring than it proves to be in everyday use. It’s not just the number of LEDs or an eye-catching product image that matters: the key is the combination of IP rating, power supply, cable length and intended use.
The word “waterproof” is not necessarily a precise technical specification. Look for a clearly stated IP rating. IP65 string lights are generally protected against dust and water jets from different directions. However, this doesn’t mean every component can be left underwater for long periods.
For many solar products, the IP rating applies only to the string lights. The solar panel, battery box or connectors may have different specifications. So don’t place the panel in a dip where rainwater can collect.
Solar string lights need plenty of direct sunlight. Under a covered balcony, behind a wall or beneath a tree, the stated charging time may increase considerably. In winter and on cloudy days, how long the lights stay on also depends on how much energy they have actually stored.
The solar models featured here are listed as taking 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight to charge and providing 8 to 14 hours of light. These figures depend on the weather, so don’t treat them as a guaranteed daily run time.
Long string lights aren’t automatically right for every space. The distance between the LEDs, the number of bulbs and the colour of the light all matter. G40 string lights, with their larger globe bulbs, are a good choice for pergolas, patios or event spaces, for example. For delicate decorations on branches and railings, flexible solar copper wire string lights are often more practical.
When choosing outdoor LED string lights, check that the IP rating is clearly stated. IP65 is suitable for typical outdoor areas exposed to rain and splashes, but not for immersion in water. Protect connectors from standing water. For mains-powered products, also check that the power supply and plug are suitable for outdoor use.
Solar products run on a built-in rechargeable battery and don’t need an external socket. Automatic dusk activation is convenient, but you’ll need to switch the lights on before using them for the first time. With connectable string lights, check the maximum connection capacity and whether you can safely connect multiple sets.
Dimmable string lights give you more control over the lighting for patios, hospitality venues or events. For decorative models with changing effects, a timer and memory function can also be useful, so you don’t have to select your preferred setting again each day.
Warm white light has a subtle effect and is often a good choice for seating areas, weddings and hospitality venues. Multi-colour string lights are better suited to birthdays, Christmas decorations or garden parties. Copper wire can be wrapped flexibly around branches, railings or decorative objects. ABS plastic is often used for housings and bulb holders.
Before you buy, check the actual length of each string. Sets vary, for example, from 8 metres with 80 LEDs to 12 metres with 120 LEDs, and 20 or 45 metres with G40 bulbs.
Why it suits this profile: Two 8-metre strings, each with 80 LEDs, are ideal for smaller balconies, plants, windows or individual areas of the garden. Solar power means there’s no need for a socket.
The stated IP65 rating and specific string length make planning easier. The solar panel should still be positioned in an open, sunny spot.
Solar-powered, with 8 lighting modes, a memory function and flexible copper wires.
Why it suits this profile: This 45-metre G40 string is designed for large patios, pergolas, cafés, gardens and event spaces.
The IP65 rating, replaceable bulbs and shatterproof bulb covers provide clear information to help you plan for outdoor use.
45 metres long, with warm white light, dimmable bulbs, a connectable design and capacity for up to 500 bulbs according to the product information.
Why it suits this profile: The longer 12-metre strings, each with 120 LEDs, are well suited to larger trees, fences, balconies, weddings or colourful outdoor Christmas decorations.
The product information clearly states the length, number of LEDs, IP65 rating and weather-dependent run time. This helps you plan based on more than just promotional images.
12 metres per string, 120 LEDs, eight modes with a memory function and multi-colour lighting.
Why it suits this profile: The 20-metre version combines decorative G40 bulbs with a manageable length for balconies, patios, gardens or smaller celebrations.
The string is listed as IP65 rated, with replaceable bulbs and the option to extend it. Keep the connectors protected from standing water.
20 metres long, with 23 warm white G40 LED bulbs, dimmable brightness and an extendable design.
We’ve put together a complete, regularly updated list of products that meet these strict selection criteria and fully comply with the safety regulations in force in the EU.
Consumption depends on the number of LEDs, their power rating and how long they’re switched on. Solar string lights get their energy from the solar panel and don’t use mains electricity while they’re on. For plug-in models, compare the wattage with the expected daily usage.
The string lights themselves are protected against dust and water jets when rated IP65. This doesn’t automatically apply to the solar panel, battery housing or connection points. Don’t leave them submerged or in places where rainwater can collect.
Their lifespan depends on factors including the battery, LEDs, weather, installation and storage. Replaceable bulbs can make it easier to keep using certain G40 models. For solar products, care for the battery according to the manufacturer’s instructions and check it if performance starts to decline.
