Buying a play kitchen: what to consider about materials, features and safety

A play kitchen encourages imaginative role play and lets children act out everyday activities such as cooking, washing up and shopping. But looks aren’t the only thing to consider when buying one. Many products seem appealing thanks to their numerous accessories, lights and sound effects or familiar brand names, but they won’t always suit the space you have, your child’s age or the way they’ll use it.

This guide explains which features really matter when choosing a play kitchen, and which common buying decisions can lead to disappointment.

Common pitfalls when buying a play kitchen

1. Confusing the number of accessories with play value

A large accessory set may sound like a great deal at first. What matters, though, is whether the pieces work with the kitchen and can be stored away easily. Small items can quickly get lost and may not be suitable for younger children. So check:

  • Which items are actually included?
  • Is there somewhere to store them?
  • Are the small parts and accessories suitable for the intended age group?
  • Is this a complete play kitchen or just an add-on set?

For example, an 8-piece kitchen role-play toy can be a useful first set or an addition to an existing kitchen, but it won’t necessarily replace a freestanding play kitchen with a hob, sink and storage.

2. Lights and sounds aren’t always practical

A play kitchen with lights and sounds can add extra ideas to playtime. However, battery-powered features come with ongoing costs and need to be handled safely. Check:

  • the size and number of batteries required,
  • whether the battery compartments are secure and easy to access,
  • the volume and whether the sounds can be switched off,
  • how electronic components are protected from water.

If the play kitchen has a sink, only use water where the manufacturer says it’s suitable. Electronic hobs and microwaves must not come into contact with liquid.

3. Underestimating the dimensions

A large wooden play kitchen can take up a lot of floor space in a child’s bedroom, hallway or shared playroom. As well as its width and height, consider the doors and drawers, and how much space it needs around other furniture. Measure the intended spot before you buy and leave enough room to move around.

Key things to consider when choosing

Materials and construction

A wooden or MDF play kitchen often feels sturdy, but it needs to be assembled carefully. Check the details on:

  • the materials used for the body and fronts,
  • rounded edges,
  • stability,
  • screw joints and fixings,
  • care instructions.

FSC-certified wood indicates that the wood comes from certified sources. It isn’t a general guarantee of quality for every individual component. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning and use instructions for coated or painted surfaces.

Age guidance and safety information

Many models are labelled as play kitchens for children aged 3 and over. This may be because they contain small parts that could be swallowed, or features that require supervision. Before buying, check:

  • the age guidance and warnings,
  • information about small parts,
  • the CE marking and any available conformity information,
  • stability after assembly,
  • whether screws and connectors need regular checks.

The CE marking is a manufacturer’s declaration that certain EU requirements have been met. It doesn’t replace checking whether the specific model is right for your home and your child’s stage of development.

Height, play position and use

A height-adjustable play kitchen may be a good option if several children of different heights will be playing together. For fixed-height models, compare the worktop height with your child’s height. For nurseries and families with several children, a sturdy construction, enough space between play areas and easily accessible storage are also important.

An outdoor play kitchen needs extra care. Empty and dry the water container and sink after every use. If it won’t be used for a while, store it somewhere dry or cover it with a suitable cover.

Assembly, care and ongoing costs

Almost all larger models need to be assembled by an adult. Allow plenty of time, and check and tighten the screws after the first use. Clean wooden surfaces with a dry or slightly damp cloth, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Electronic modules must not be cleaned under running water.

Batteries are usually not included with lights and sound features. Check the specified battery size, such as AA or R6, and remove the batteries if the toy won’t be used for a while. If you see a battery leaking, only an adult should clean the compartment. Don’t use the toy again until the issue has been resolved.

Play kitchen FAQs

Which play kitchen is suitable for children aged 3 and over?

Choose a model that’s explicitly labelled as suitable from age 3, and check that its warnings are appropriate for how you plan to use it. Small parts, battery compartments and doors that move should be supervised during play.

How much space does a play kitchen need?

It depends on the model. Compact options may be around 70 cm wide, while larger ones can be more than 80 cm wide. You’ll also need space to open the oven, fridge or drawers, plus a safe area in front of the kitchen for children to move around.

Is a play kitchen with lights and sounds worth it?

These features can add to imaginative play. Whether they’re worth the extra cost depends on how often your child will use them. Consider battery costs, volume, cleaning and the safe use of electronic components.
