A portable Bluetooth speaker lets you play music without a wired connection, is easy to carry and can cope with rain, dust or a day by the lake. The range stretches from a mini Bluetooth speaker for your rucksack or kitchen to a heavy-duty party speaker with lighting and inputs for a microphone or guitar.
However, product descriptions often use the same buzzwords without explaining what they mean in practice. If you focus only on wattage, battery capacity or the label “waterproof”, you could end up with a speaker that doesn’t suit the way you’ll use it day to day.
A waterproof speaker isn’t automatically suitable for every situation involving water. The IP67 rating generally means the casing is dust-tight and, according to the technical specifications, can be submerged in water to a depth of up to 1 metre for a limited time. However, this doesn’t mean the speaker is suitable for prolonged submersion, high-pressure water, salt water or charging while wet.
Check that the charging cover is closed, and dry the speaker before connecting the USB-C cable. If you’re choosing a speaker for the pool, it should also float in case it’s accidentally dropped in.
The claim “up to 20 or 30 hours” describes ideal operating conditions. Volume, bass mode, lighting, Bluetooth connection and the music you’re playing all affect actual battery life. A Bluetooth speaker with long battery life may need recharging much sooner when used at high volume.
For hiking and travel, weight, charging time and the charging port matter as well as maximum battery life. A heavy speaker with a long battery life isn’t necessarily practical if you have to carry it for long distances.
High output power alone doesn’t tell you much about sound quality. Small enclosures can reproduce voices clearly, but naturally have less capacity to deliver deep bass than larger models. A compact mono speaker is often enough for podcasts, audiobooks and background music. For a garden party or a larger room, stereo speakers, passive radiators and a larger enclosure are more suitable.
Think about where you’ll place it, too. Some models are designed to project sound in a particular direction, while others adapt their playback to their position.
The first digit describes protection against solid objects, while the second indicates protection against water. With IP67, the “6” means dust-tight, while the “7” indicates limited protection against immersion under the specified test conditions. IPX7 describes water protection but makes no claim about dust resistance.
A dustproof speaker with an IP67 rating is therefore generally better suited to sand, dry walking trails and camping than a model that only specifies water protection. Even so, the rating doesn’t replace proper care: remove any sand and dry damp connections thoroughly.
Bluetooth 5.3 or 5.4 can provide a modern wireless connection, but range also depends on walls, interference and the smartphone you’re using. Figures such as “up to 9 metres” should be treated as a guide.
Multipoint is useful if you want to keep two source devices connected at the same time. For example, two people can take turns choosing music without having to set up a new connection each time. For everyday use by one person, a stable Bluetooth connection to your smartphone is usually enough.
A portable speaker should suit the way you plan to carry it. Weighing around 260 to 330 grams, a speaker is better suited to a rucksack, bike bag or hand luggage. Models weighing several kilograms usually offer more volume and features, but are better suited to a patio, garden or event.
Other useful features include USB-C, a carry loop, an equaliser app and easy-to-reach buttons. A built-in microphone can let you take hands-free calls. If you only want to listen to music, you may not need these extra features.
Why this product suits this type of user: According to the product specifications, this compact model weighs around 263.65 grams and is designed for use with a smartphone, tablet or laptop. It’s a good fit for the kitchen, picnics, walks and short trips.
The product specifications state up to 20 hours of playback, IP67 protection and a floating design. This makes it easier to assess battery life and water suitability than relying on vague marketing claims with no specific figures.
Lightweight design, integrated carry loop, IP67 protection and True Wireless Stereo pairing with a second compatible speaker.
Why this product suits this type of user: According to the manufacturer, this speaker combines a weight of 590 grams with PositionIQ, multipoint Bluetooth 5.3, IP67 protection and a built-in microphone. These features are useful for everyday use, travel and outdoor listening in different positions.
The stated IP67 rating and specific Bluetooth range of up to 9 metres make its suitability for outdoor use easier to assess. Battery life is listed as up to 12 hours, clearly identified as a maximum figure.
Sound optimisation based on orientation, USB-C, multipoint connection, and stereo and party modes with compatible Bose speakers.
Why this product suits this type of user: With a stated weight of 3.3 kilograms, up to 25 hours of battery life, LED lighting and Party Connect, this model is aimed at garden parties, larger rooms and frequent events.
You can assess its features against specific details: IP67 protection, a detachable shoulder strap, USB-C, a 3.5 mm input and a stated battery life. Its weight is also clear, so you can factor in that it may not be ideal for hiking.
Two ULT sound modes, 360-degree lighting, smartphone charging and the option to connect compatible Sony speakers.

Switch on the speaker, turn on Bluetooth on your smartphone and select the device name that appears. If it’s a new connection, you may need to confirm a pairing request. If there are several devices nearby, try temporarily disconnecting any Bluetooth devices you don’t need.
It depends on the volume, sound mode, lighting and age of the battery. The manufacturer’s “up to” figure is a useful point of comparison. For frequent outdoor use, models with a stated battery life of 12 to 30 hours and a USB-C charging port are practical. The usable capacity may decrease after many charge cycles.
An IP67 speaker is dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion under specified conditions, according to its IP rating. Even so, it shouldn’t be left in water for long periods, exposed to a high-pressure jet or charged while wet. If it comes into contact with salt water or chlorinated water, it’s a good idea to clean it afterwards according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
