Buying scented candles: A guide to choosing fragrance, burn time and safe decoration

Scented candles combine home fragrance, warm light and decorative appeal. Whether you are looking for a Yankee Candle scented candle, a large scented candle in a jar, a soy wax candle, tea lights or LED candles, there is plenty of choice. However, differences in wax, wick, container size and fragrance profile have a direct impact on how a candle is used, how long it lasts and its price.

If you buy based solely on colour or brand name, you can easily overlook important details. Three common buying habits are particularly likely to lead to disappointment:

  • “Long burn time” without context: Claims such as “up to 90 hours” are guidelines. The actual burn time depends, among other things, on wick care, draughts and how long the candle is burned each time.
  • Treating fragrance oil concentration as the only measure of quality: A strong fragrance is not suitable for every room. In smaller rooms or for those with a sensitive sense of smell, a subtler fragrance profile may be more pleasant.
  • Decorative glass without a safety check: An attractive container is no substitute for a stable, heat-resistant surface. A jar must also not be used if it has cracks or other damage.

Which criteria matter when choosing scented candles

1. Wax, weight and realistic burn time

The wax affects how a candle burns and how it needs to be cared for. Depending on the product, a soy wax candle or a soy wax blend may be combined with other types of wax. You should therefore check the specific material information rather than relying solely on the word “soy”.

Weight is also relevant: a large scented candle in a jar weighing 567 g contains considerably more wax than a 70-g candle. Yankee Candle Signature Large Jars, for example, are stated to burn for up to 90 hours; the 567-g Baking Memories model with two wicks is listed as lasting for around 60 to 90 hours. These figures are manufacturer estimates, not a guarantee for every usage situation.

For a fair comparison, it is worth:

  1. Recording the weight of the wax.
  2. Dividing the stated burn time by the weight.
  3. Checking whether the candle has one wick or several.
  4. Observing the recommended maximum burn time per session.

2. Choose a fragrance profile to suit the room

Fragrance notes can be broadly grouped according to how they are used:

  • Vanilla scented candle: Sweet, soft and often well suited to living rooms or bedrooms.
  • Cinnamon candle and Christmas candle: Spicy, warming notes for winter and Advent decorations.
  • Autumn candle: Combinations of pumpkin, apple, cinnamon, clove or baked notes.
  • Fresh scented candle: Citrus, cotton, green leaves or herbal notes create a cleaner impression in a room.
  • Floral scented candles: Gardenia, jasmine or rose add a distinctly floral accent.

The fragrance description should ideally be assessed by looking at the individual notes. Yankee Candle’s “Clean Cotton”, for example, lists ozone, green leaf, bergamot and cotton notes, along with lily of the valley, rose, vetiver, cedarwood and musk. This is a different direction from the sweet and spicy composition of Baking Memories, with cinnamon, baked goods, vanilla, praline and tonka bean.

3. Size, wick and container

Multiple wicks can help create a more even melt pool in wide candles, but they also need to be trimmed regularly. Before each use, the wick should be trimmed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions — for the products mentioned, usually to around 5 to 6 mm.

Important technical details include:

  • Container diameter and height
  • Number and material of the wicks
  • Weight of the wax
  • Maximum burn time per session
  • Distance from curtains, paper and other flammable materials
  • Condition of the glass

A 200-g candle from Zooly measures 7.5 cm in diameter and 6 cm in height, with a stated burn time of up to 30 hours. The container can be reused once it has cooled completely and been cleaned. This is practical, but it should not be confused with a guaranteed longer lifespan for the candle.

How to use scented candles safely

A few basic rules apply to traditional candles and tea lights:

  • Always place them on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
  • Never leave burning candles unattended.
  • Keep them away from curtains, furniture, paper and draughts.
  • Keep children and pets at a safe distance.
  • Trim the wick before lighting.
  • Do not burn a candle for longer than stated by the manufacturer, often a maximum of four hours.
  • Do not move the container while the wax or glass is hot.
  • Stop using the candle when approximately 1 cm of wax remains or if the glass is damaged.

LED candles are an alternative when you want decorative light without a naked flame. However, they do not provide home fragrance. If you would like both, you can combine LED decoration with a scented candle placed separately, remembering that the scented candle must also be supervised.

Frequently asked questions about scented candles

How long does a scented candle burn?

Burn time depends on the weight, wax blend, number of wicks and how the candle is used. According to product information, small 70-g candles can burn for up to 25 hours, while 567-g jars with multiple wicks are stated to burn for up to 90 hours. “Up to” indicates an estimated figure under certain conditions.

How can you prevent a scented candle from tunnelling?

When lighting the candle for the first time, the top layer of wax should ideally melt evenly all the way to the edge. Trim the wick to the recommended length before every use. Burning the candle for too short a time or using a wick that is too long can encourage an uneven melt pool.

Which is more economical: scented candles or tea lights?

That depends on how you plan to use them. A large candle provides longer use in one container, while tea lights can be used flexibly in lanterns, table decorations and at events. If you use them regularly, a multipack of 100 tea lights may be more economical; for a gift, a decorative candle gift set is often the better choice.
