Buying scented candles: A guide to fragrance, burn time and safe use

A scented candle combines warm light with a room fragrance and can be used as a home accessory or gift. The selection ranges from scented candles in glass jars and aromatic candles to scented tealights. However, product claims are not always directly comparable. If you decide based solely on the fragrance name or packaging, you can easily overlook important information about materials, burn time and safety.

Common pitfalls when buying scented candles

1. A high fragrance-oil concentration is not a universal measure of quality

A statement such as “8% fragrance oil” initially describes the proportion of fragrance components. On its own, it does not indicate how intensely a candle will be perceived in a particular room. Room size, air circulation, personal sensitivity to fragrance and the composition of the fragrance also affect how it is experienced.

For small rooms such as a bedroom, a subtle scented candle for the bedroom may be more suitable than a strongly perfumed option. In the living room, entrance hall or a larger dining room, however, a larger candle with a higher wax weight may be a better choice.

2. Burn times are not always stated under the same conditions

“Up to 27 hours” or “up to 30 hours” are guidelines, not a guarantee for every use situation. A wick that is too long, draughts or an unevenly melted wax pool can alter consumption. A long-burning candle should therefore be assessed not only by its stated number of hours, but also by its net weight, container size and care instructions.

3. A decorative container does not replace a safety check

A decorative candle in a glass or ceramic container can complement your interior beautifully. However, the container becomes hot while the candle is burning. It is important to use a stable, heat-resistant surface, maintain sufficient distance from flammable materials and supervise the candle continuously. A reusable glass is practical, but it should only be used for another purpose once it has cooled completely and been thoroughly cleaned.

Which criteria really matter when choosing scented candles

Wax type and material

The label should clearly state whether the candle is made from paraffin wax, a wax blend or is a soy wax candle. A soy wax candle is not automatically made from pure soy wax: some products use blends containing paraffin or other types of wax. According to the product description, the Zooly models mentioned here use a blend of American 113 soy wax and Givaudan blended wax. The Yankee Candle tealights are described as a soy wax blend with high-quality paraffin wax.

The key point is that material information, net weight and safety instructions should be provided in full on the product page or packaging.

Wick and care

The wick affects the flame height and burning performance. The Zooly candles specify an HTP wick, which is recommended to be trimmed to approximately 6 mm before lighting. For the Yankee Candle and Glade products, the recommendation is approximately 5 mm or around 0.2 inches, respectively.

Before lighting a container candle for the first time, the wax pool should ideally melt right to the edge. This helps to reduce tunnelling. Most product instructions also recommend not burning a candle for longer than four hours at a time.

Size, room and fragrance family

For a scented candle for the living room, larger containers or several smaller candles may be suitable. A 567-g candle will offer a different usage time from a 112-g candle. For a bedroom, bathroom or small hallway, more compact formats are often sufficient.

Fragrance families can help when choosing a scent:

  • Vanilla, musk and sandalwood: warm, soft-feeling notes, such as those in Warm Cashmere.
  • Fruity notes: cherry, berries or pomegranate may be described as particularly noticeable.
  • Floral notes: peony, silk flower or vanilla blossom.
  • Woody notes: juniper, patchouli or other woody accords, for example.

As fragrance perception is subjective, shoppers should check the specific notes listed rather than relying solely on terms such as “fresh”, “luxurious” or “intense”.

Using scented candles safely and economically

A few simple steps are key to safe, even use:

  1. Place the scented candle on a level, heat-resistant surface and avoid draughts.
  2. Trim the wick to the length recommended by the manufacturer before each use.
  3. When burning a container candle for the first time, leave it lit for long enough for the top layer of wax to melt as evenly as possible.
  4. Do not burn the candle for longer than four hours at a time unless the product instructions state otherwise.
  5. Stop burning the candle when approximately 1 cm of wax remains. Individual products may have different safety instructions.
  6. Never leave burning candles unattended and keep them away from children, pets and easily flammable objects.

A candle should also be allowed to cool completely before being moved. This reduces the risk of spilling hot wax or damaging the container.

Scented candle FAQ

How long can a scented candle burn continuously?

Many container candles have a maximum burn time of four hours per session. The specific recommendation can be found on the packaging or product page. Tealights should be allowed to burn down fully in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions; relighting them may cause the wick to sink into the wax.

Which scented candle is suitable for the bedroom?

Fragrance notes and intensity are key considerations for the bedroom. Smaller formats with a moderate fragrance release may be more practical than large candles with a high fragrance-oil content. A scented candle should only be burned while you are present and never while you are sleeping.

How much does it cost to use a scented candle?

The ongoing cost depends on the purchase price, net weight, actual burn time and frequency of use. For a rough comparison, divide the price by the stated total burn time. This figure is only a guide, as draughts, wick care and the burn time per use all affect consumption.
