Buying scented candles: how to compare fragrances, burn time and materials

A scented candle combines warm light with a room fragrance, which is why it is often bought as a home accessory, for special occasions or as a gift. However, there are clear differences between a scented candle in a glass jar, a soy wax candle and a luxury scented candle when it comes to wax, fragrance intensity, size and burn time.

If you decide based solely on the packaging or fragrance description, you can quickly overlook important details. Three common purchasing misconceptions are particularly relevant:

  • “Long burn time” without a standardised comparison size: A large 567 g candle will naturally burn for considerably longer than a compact 70 g candle. The stated number of hours should therefore always be considered alongside the weight and number of wicks.
  • Fragrance oil is not the same as essential oil: A candle containing essential oils may also include perfume components. The full composition is therefore more important than a single marketing claim.
  • A decorative jar does not replace safety information: An attractive container does not automatically make the candle suitable for every location. Glass, porcelain and candle wax can become hot during use.

Which criteria really matter when choosing scented candles

1. Wax type and fragrance composition

A soy wax candle consists wholly or partly of soy wax. For blends, the product description should be read carefully. According to the manufacturer, the Zooly models use a blend of American 113 soy wax and Givaudan blended wax. Glade states that its candles use perfumed paraffin wax with various fragrance compositions and essential oils. Depending on the model, Yankee Candle lists either a soy wax blend or paraffin wax.

Three points are useful when making your choice:

  • Is the wax type clearly stated?
  • Are fragrance oils, essential oils or both listed?
  • Is there information about allergens or a complete fragrance ingredient declaration?

A high concentration of fragrance oil may indicate a more intense fragrance throw, but on its own it says nothing about personal tolerance. People who are sensitive to fragrances should check the ingredient information and seek medical advice if unsure.

2. Burn time, weight and wick

The long burn time depends on factors including the amount of wax, the wick, the shape of the container and burning conditions. Examples from the selection include:

  • Glade candles weighing 112 g: up to 27 hours
  • Zooly candles weighing 200 g: up to 30 hours according to the product information
  • Acqua Di Parma Aperitivo In Terrazza weighing 200 g: up to 50 hours
  • Yankee Candle Amber & Sandalwood weighing 567 g: approximately 60 to 90 hours
  • Diptyque 34 Boulevard Saint Germain weighing 600 g: approximately 90 hours

These are manufacturer figures and may vary depending on room temperature, draughts and care. A three-wick candle, such as the Diptyque model, must be lit with all three wicks at the same time according to the instructions, so that the surface melts more evenly.

3. Container, size and location

A scented candle in a glass jar is often suitable for the living room, hallway or bathroom. A stable, level and heat-resistant surface is essential, along with sufficient distance from curtains, paper, furniture and other flammable materials.

For a living room candle, larger containers or several smaller candles are suitable if you want a stronger room fragrance. In the bedroom, the fragrance intensity should be chosen according to personal preference. A candle with sandalwood or lavender notes can be selected as a room fragrance candle, but it is not a medical or therapeutic product.

Design is also a practical selection criterion: a porcelain container creates a different impression from a simple glass jar, while a coloured or reusable container can continue to be used as a decorative candle holder or storage container after the candle has burned down.

How to use scented candles safely and get more from them

For an even melt pool and controlled use, these steps are important:

  1. Place the candle on a level, heat-resistant surface and avoid draughts.
  2. Trim the wick to the manufacturer’s recommended length before lighting it; for many models, this is approximately 5 to 6 mm.
  3. When burning the candle for the first time, wait until the top layer of wax has melted as far out towards the edge as possible. Depending on the size, this may take several hours.
  4. Do not burn the candle for more than four hours at a time, unless the product instructions specify a shorter period.
  5. Never leave the flame unattended and extinguish the candle before approximately 1 cm of wax remains.
  6. Only move the container once it has cooled completely. An empty glass jar can be cleaned, reused or disposed of in accordance with local requirements.

FAQ about scented candles

How long should a scented candle burn at a time?

For the products mentioned, a maximum burn time of four hours at a time is usually stated. A shorter period may be advisable for smaller candles. The instructions provided by the respective manufacturer should always be followed.

Which scented candle is suitable for the bedroom?

This depends on personal fragrance preferences and sensitivities. Sandalwood, vanilla or floral notes such as jasmine and gardenia are popular options. A candle should only be burned in the bedroom under direct supervision and must be extinguished before leaving the room.

Is a scented candle suitable as a gift?

A scented candle as a gift is particularly suitable when you know the recipient’s preferred fragrance family, container size and interior style. If you are unsure, neutral decorative candles in glass jars or versions with clearly described fragrance notes are good choices. Brands such as Yankee Candle, Glade and Diptyque cover a range of different sizes and price points.
