A shopping trolley can make it easier to transport shopping, laundry or luggage. However, models vary considerably in their wheels, load capacity, storage space and folding mechanism. A large bag alone doesn’t tell you whether a shopping trolley will suit your day-to-day needs.
Three common misconceptions often lead to the wrong choice:
First, think about how much you usually need to carry. For smaller errands, a wheeled shopping bag or compact shopping trolley may be enough. For a weekly shop, laundry or family needs, models with a large bag and a capacity of around 38 to 45 litres are more practical.
It’s important to distinguish between bag capacity and maximum load capacity. A 40-litre compartment can hold a lot, but that doesn’t mean you should fill it to the brim with heavy drinks. Place heavy items at the bottom and as close to the centre as possible. This keeps the centre of gravity low and makes the trolley more stable to pull.
Also check whether the load limit applies to the bag, the frame or the trolley when used without its bag. A 2-in-1 transport trolley may have different load limits for shopping and hand-trolley use.
Two large wheels are often suitable for level paths, supermarkets and pavements. EVA or PU wheels may run more quietly than hard plastic ones. For cobbles, kerbs and stairs, consider models with six wheels.
A shopping trolley with 6 wheels usually has three wheels on each side, arranged to rotate. This design can make it easier to get over individual steps, but it doesn’t replace careful handling. Check:
A trolley without a parking brake shouldn’t be left unattended on a slope. For a shopping trolley for older people, an easy-to-reach handle, manageable weight and stable standing position are particularly important. It does not provide any medical or therapeutic benefit.
A metal or steel frame provides a defined structure. Polyester and Oxford fabric bags are lightweight and may be water-repellent, depending on their coating. However, “water-repellent” doesn’t automatically mean waterproof. If it rains for a prolonged period, protect delicate items separately.
Also check:
A folding shopping trolley or foldable transport trolley is useful for small homes and car boots. The folding mechanism should work without excessive force and click or visibly lock into place when opened. Watch out for pinch points around the metal joints when folding it down.
Why this product suits your needs: This two-wheeled model is designed for everyday shopping on level urban routes and has a removable bag.

600D Oxford bag with a water-repellent coating, two EVA wheels and a removable bag so the frame can be used as a transport aid.
Why this product suits your needs: The six PU wheels and 38-litre bag are designed for routes with kerbs, steps and larger shopping loads.
The stair-climbing function is described alongside its specific wheel design, but the trolley should still be used with an evenly distributed load and careful guidance.

Its lifespan depends on the load, the surfaces you use it on, how well you maintain it, and the quality of its wheels and joints. Avoid overloading it regularly, don’t pull it over unsuitable edges, and clear dirt from the wheels. Store fabric bags in a dry place to prevent odours or mould. Moving joints can be maintained occasionally in line with the manufacturer’s instructions.
Models with six wheels and a triple-wheel mechanism may be suitable for individual steps or kerbs. However, they won’t necessarily work on every staircase. Check the height of the steps, the width of the staircase, the load and the handle position. Heavy loads still need to be guided slowly and carefully.
Apart from the purchase price, ongoing costs are usually low. The main things to consider are replacement wheels, possible repairs and maintenance. If suitable spare parts are available, removable bags can be replaced when they wear out. In the long run, a model with a sturdy frame and easy-to-access components may be more practical than a very cheap trolley with wheels or joints that can’t be replaced.
