A shopping trolley can make it much easier to carry groceries, laundry or parcels. However, models vary considerably in load capacity, wheel design, folded size and weather protection. A low price or a long list of features alone tells you little about how well a trolley will perform day to day.
Three common buying mistakes are particularly likely to lead to disappointment:
For small, everyday errands, 20 to 30 litres is often enough. If you regularly carry crates of drinks, a larger weekly shop or laundry, choose a bigger model. A 25 kg shopping trolley is suitable for heavier loads, provided the weight limit clearly applies to the mode in which you intend to use it.
It’s important to distinguish between:
A large capacity is of little use if the contents make the bag unstable. Place heavy items at the bottom and as close to the centre as possible. This helps reduce tipping and puts less strain on the wheel mounts.
Two large EVA wheels usually roll quietly and need little maintenance on flat surfaces. They’re a good fit for traditional shopping trolleys used for trips to the supermarket, market or nearby shops.
A stair-climbing shopping trolley, on the other hand, often has three rotating wheels on each side, making six in total. This design can help when negotiating kerbs and stairs. It doesn’t remove the need to handle the trolley safely: keep hold of the handle and guide it carefully on steps, never leaving it unattended.
Also look for:
A folding shopping trolley should be easy to collapse without a complicated series of steps. This is especially handy in small flats, in the car boot or when storing it behind a door. Before buying, check that its folded dimensions will fit in the space you have in mind.
An ergonomic handle at a suitable height helps you avoid walking with a permanently hunched posture. For older people and anyone with limited strength, a low trolley weight and a secure grip are also important.
600D Oxford fabric is a useful indication of the bag material. A water-repellent coating and cover flap help protect against dust and light rain. If you want to use a shopping trolley in wet weather, read the product description carefully: “water-repellent” does not necessarily mean it will stay waterproof in heavy rain.
Why it’s a good fit: This classic two-wheel model is designed for regular shopping trips on flat surfaces and comes with a removable bag.
The product description says it’s intended for standard surfaces and makes clear that it’s not designed for rough terrain or high kerbs.
Removable satin bag, steel frame and an overall height of 91 cm.
Why it’s a good fit: This model combines a 30-litre Oxford bag with a removable hand-cart frame, making it suitable for regular shopping trips and carrying parcels.
The specifications give a maximum hand-cart load of 25 kg and describe the bag as water-repellent, rather than claiming it is fully waterproof.
16 mm steel tubing, a sturdy axle, quiet EVA wheels and a flat-folding design.
Why it’s a good fit: The six wheels and built-in thermal compartment make this a useful option if you often tackle stairs, kerbs or longer journeys with temperature-sensitive shopping.
The safety information gives a maximum load of 30 kg and recommends keeping both hands on the handle when using the trolley on stairs, with the load distributed evenly.
Three-wheel mechanism on each side, 600D polyester and built-in insulation.
We’ve put together a comprehensive, regularly updated list of products that meet these strict selection criteria and the applicable EU safety regulations.
To keep your shopping trolley in good working order for longer, regularly clear hair, sand and small stones from the wheels and axles. Depending on the care instructions, fabric bags can be cleaned with a damp cloth. If the bag gets wet in the rain, let it dry completely before folding the trolley.
You should also avoid:
A folding hand cart is handy for carrying parcels or crates of drinks. However, remove the bag if the manufacturer intends the trolley to be used in this 2-in-1 mode.
For stairs, consider models with six wheels, or a three-wheel mechanism on each side. Move the trolley slowly, one step at a time, distribute the load evenly and stay within the stated weight limit. A stair-climbing shopping trolley doesn’t automatically make using it risk-free.
Its lifespan depends on the load, the surfaces it’s used on, how it’s stored and how well it’s cared for. A sturdy frame, a solid axle and hard-wearing wheels can all help it stand up to everyday use. Joints, wheel mounts and the folding mechanism are particularly prone to wear.
Ongoing costs are generally low. You may need to pay for replacement wheels, other wear parts or a new bag. If you have a shopping trolley with a thermal compartment, take extra care to clean it and dry the lining thoroughly.
