Buying a shopping trolley: what matters for stability, comfort and foldability

A shopping trolley can make transporting groceries much easier – provided its construction, storage capacity and wheels suit your everyday needs. For regular supermarket trips, commutes or households without a car, colour and capacity are not the only factors that matter. Handle height, weight distribution and suitability for kerbs or stairs should also be checked before buying.

The following advice comes from the perspective of the Joybuy Product Recommendation Officer. The aim is to provide an objective shortlist, put marketing terms into context and help you avoid common poor purchases.

Three common pitfalls when buying a shopping trolley

1. Large capacity without a suitable supporting structure

A large shopping trolley may seem practical at first glance. However, when the bag is fully loaded, the frame, base or wheels may be placed under greater strain. The term “heavy shopping trolley” does not automatically indicate a tested maximum load. Therefore, look for specific information about load capacity, a stable bag base and even weight distribution.

Heavy products such as drinks or tins should ideally be placed at the bottom. This keeps the centre of gravity low, making the wheeled shopping trolley less likely to tip over.

2. Overestimating the stair-climbing function

A stair-climbing shopping trolley can be helpful when getting over individual steps. However, it does not replace a level, safe means of transport and is not equally suitable for every stair width or load. Check whether the wheels are genuinely designed for steps and how the trolley is meant to be guided.

When carrying it up several floors, the trolley’s own weight also matters. A very robust trolley may already be relatively heavy when empty. For people with limited mobility, the combination of unladen weight, handle position and actual load capacity is therefore particularly important.

3. Foldable does not automatically mean space-saving in everyday use

A foldable shopping trolley should be easy to collapse without much effort and should fit into the intended storage space when folded. Before buying, check the folded dimensions if they are provided. A removable bag can make cleaning easier, while the attachment to the frame should still be secure.

Parameters to compare before buying

Wheels, frame and surfaces

Two wheels are suitable for ordinary routes, pavements and smooth surfaces. For cobblestones, high kerbs or uneven paths, larger or wider wheels are generally beneficial, provided the manufacturer specifically states this. The wheel axles should not visibly wobble, and the frame should remain as resistant to twisting as possible even when the bag is loaded.

For everyday shopping in Germany, the following questions are also worth considering:

  • Is the trolley designed for level surfaces, or for steps as well?
  • Is there any information about the maximum load?
  • Can the bag be removed for cleaning?
  • Are replacement parts or care instructions available?
  • Does the trolley remain stable when parked?

Handle and ease of use

An ergonomic handle should be comfortable and secure to grip. For older people and users with limited mobility, a comfortable handle height, controlled turning circle and low unladen weight are important criteria. A very short handle can lead to an awkward posture, while a handle that is too high can make the trolley harder to control.

Also check whether the handle is firmly attached to the frame. With a wheeled shopping trolley, it should not be necessary to control the trolley solely via the bag.

Material, bag and interior

Steel or metal frames can provide a sturdy foundation, while PP plastic makes baskets lightweight and easy to clean. The material alone, however, says little about the actual service life. The connections, base, seams, fastenings and wheel construction are what really matter.

A shopping bag with frame is practical if it can be detached from the frame. An easily accessible interior is useful when carrying groceries of different sizes. Anyone who also uses the trolley on foot or on public transport should additionally look for a secure fastening and a shape that is easy to carry.

Additional baskets for shopping and storage

Not every need calls for a wheeled trolley. A shopping and storage basket can be useful for smaller errands, the boot of your car or organised storage at home. Winpex’s foldable basket is made from PP and MDF, measures 43,5 × 30 × 24 cm and offers around 30 litres according to the product details. The removable wooden lid can serve as a simple portable tray. You can find the product as a foldable storage basket with wooden lid.

PP baskets with capacities of 1,8 or 6 litres are designed for smaller compartments. If you are looking for a picnic basket with a wooden lid, you should also bear in mind that MDF should not be soaked for extended periods. A soft, slightly damp cloth is recommended for cleaning.

Parents can also find child-friendly role-play accessories such as a children’s polka-dot shopping basket. According to the description, this product is suitable from 18 months. Toy cash registers with small parts, on the other hand, are labelled as suitable from three years and should be used under adult supervision.

Shopping trolley FAQ

How much weight should a shopping trolley be able to carry?

That depends on your usual shopping. A lower load capacity is sufficient for smaller errands, while sturdy frame and base specifications are more important when carrying drinks and provisions. The key factor is an expressly stated maximum load capacity. If this is not provided, distribute the weight carefully and do not infer it from marketing terms such as “Heavy-Duty”.

Is a stair-climbing shopping trolley suitable for older people?

A stair-climbing design can make individual steps easier to manage, but it is not automatically suitable for every person or staircase. Before buying, check the trolley’s own weight, handle height, wheel guidance and the effort required to pull it. If you are unsure, use it on level surfaces or with assistance.

How can you extend the service life of a shopping trolley?

Place heavy shopping at the bottom and as centrally as possible. Regularly remove sand and dirt from the wheels and frame, and follow the care instructions for the bag and fastenings. With models not designed for them, avoid high kerbs, very uneven paths and overloading. Foldable models should be stored dry and without weight left on them for extended periods.
