Buying soft toys: how families, gift buyers and collectors can find the right cuddly companion

Soft toys can be made for cuddling, playing, decorating or collecting. In practice, though, unclear age guidance, materials that are difficult to clean and exaggerated product claims can often lead to disappointing purchases. It’s worth checking the construction, safety and care instructions carefully, especially when choosing a soft toy for children or a baby comforter.

Common pitfalls when buying soft toys

1. A cute appearance doesn’t replace age guidance

Button eyes, sewn-on accessories, plastic parts or small charms can come loose with heavy use. So a product that looks like a baby comforter isn’t automatically suitable for babies. The manufacturer’s information and specific warnings are what matter.

Several of the soft toys featured here are not suitable for children under three years old, as small parts could be swallowed. Blind-box products may have an even higher minimum age.

2. ‘Washable’ doesn’t always mean machine washable

Care instructions vary considerably. Some soft toys can be cleaned at 30 °C on a delicate or wool cycle, while others should only be wiped with a damp cloth. Electronic soft toys must be completely separated from their electronic unit before washing.

Before you buy, check:

  • Is machine washing allowed, or is surface cleaning the only option?
  • Does the soft toy need to air-dry?
  • Can it go in the tumble dryer?
  • Does it have removable parts, a battery compartment or a music box?

3. Blind boxes, collectable figures and plush bag charms aren’t automatically toys for young children

With a blind-box plush series, you won’t know what’s inside until you open it. That adds an element of surprise, but makes it harder to choose a particular character. These products also often contain small parts or charms, so they’re more suitable for collectors, teenagers or adults.

It’s also worth setting a budget for blind boxes. Buying several packs doesn’t guarantee you’ll get a particular figure.

What to look for when choosing a soft toy

Age, small parts and labelling

The age guidance should match how you plan to use the toy. A CE mark indicates that the manufacturer declares the product meets the applicable EU requirements. However, it doesn’t replace checking the seams, eyes, bows, buttons and plastic parts before each use.

For children under three, look for:

  • no small parts that can come loose easily,
  • no long ribbons or cords,
  • securely sewn-on features,
  • clear warnings,
  • regular checks for damaged seams.

Never use an electronic soft toy with music, lights or movement if its battery compartment is damaged. Keep cords and fastening ribbons on a musical comforter for babies away from their sleeping area.

Materials and care

Polyester is widely used in soft toys, either for the outer fabric or the filling. But the material alone doesn’t tell you how soft, shape-retaining or easy to care for a toy will be in everyday use.

Also check:

  • dimensions and weight,
  • type of filling,
  • washing temperature,
  • drying instructions,
  • any plastic or glitter details,
  • guidance for sensitive skin.

A large soft toy measuring 90, 100 or 135 cm needs plenty of space and may not be as easy to machine-wash as a 16 or 20 cm model.

Purpose and size

Compact soft toys are handy for taking out and about, perhaps as a companion in a rucksack or as a decoration on a desk. Seated animals and larger soft toys can make decorative additions to a child’s bedroom. Collectable figures and plush characters, on the other hand, are often displayed on a shelf, desk or in a cabinet.

The right size depends not only on the child’s age, but also on where the toy will be used. A 35 cm soft toy may be suitable for cuddling and taking along, while a 100 cm panda is more likely to be used as a seat or decorative feature.

Care and durability for everyday use

How long a soft toy lasts depends mainly on how it’s used, its seams and how it’s cleaned. Always check the care label and the manufacturer’s instructions before washing. After cleaning, let the toy dry completely to prevent moisture from lingering inside.

Check regularly for:

  • seams, eyes, noses and appliqués,
  • filling and changes in shape,
  • battery compartments and cables,
  • ribbons, loops and charms,
  • odours or visible dirt.

If the toy is visibly damaged, young children should no longer use it. A soft toy makes a particularly thoughtful gift when its age suitability, care requirements and intended use are all a good match.

Frequently asked questions about soft toys

What age are soft toys suitable for?

It depends on the individual model. Some products are intended for children aged 18 months and over, or three years and over. Blind-box plush toys and models with small parts may have a higher minimum age. Always follow the information on the product page and packaging.

How often should you wash a soft toy?

There’s no general rule. If the toy is visibly dirty or often comes into contact with skin, cleaning it is a good idea, provided the care label allows it. Between washes, some products can simply be aired carefully or surface-cleaned.

Are electronic soft toys suitable for babies?

Not every electronic soft toy is suitable for babies or for unsupervised use during sleep. Take battery compartments, cables, ribbons and removable modules into account. For a musical comforter, check the safety instructions, age guidance and advice on using it in bed carefully.
