Buying Soft Toys: What Parents, Children and Collectors Should Look Out For

Soft toys may seem straightforward at first glance: choose a cuddly toy, order it and give it as a gift. In practice, however, age recommendation, build quality, materials, care requirements and size determine whether a soft toy will remain suitable for everyday use. This is particularly important when choosing a soft toy for babies and toddlers, as small details such as detachable accessories, electronic modules or loose stitching can make a difference.

Character plush figures, collectible figures and blind-box toys also deserve a closer look. Random selection can make unboxing more exciting, but it does not always provide the design you were hoping for. Our selection showcases different soft toys for different situations – from a first soft companion to a decorative XXL figure.

Common Pitfalls When Buying Soft Toys

1. Age recommendations and product descriptions are confused

The label ‘from 0 months’ does not automatically mean that every detail is suitable for a newborn. The safety information on the packaging and in the product description is what matters. Products with small plastic parts, buttons, dummies or detachable tags may have a higher minimum age.

One example is a Monchhichi soft toy. It has plastic parts on the face, hands and feet and is recommended for children aged three and over. It is therefore not suitable as a cuddly toy for babies, even though its plush body is soft.

2. ‘Washable’ does not always mean machine washable

Care instructions are essential for a cuddly toy intended for sleeping or taking out and about. Some models can be washed entirely in the machine, while others may only be cleaned on the surface. Electronic soft toys often require the module to be removed before the fabric can be washed.

Before buying, you should check:

  • Is machine washing permitted, or is hand washing the only option?
  • Can the product go in the tumble dryer?
  • Does an electronic module need to be removed?
  • How can the cuddly toy be dried completely after washing?
  • Should the stitching, eyes and tags be checked regularly?

3. The size and function do not suit the intended location

Large cuddly toys need plenty of space in a child’s bedroom and are less easy to transport. A 90 or 100 cm soft toy is more suitable as a seat, decorative feature or cuddly companion than for a pushchair. Conversely, a small soft toy can be more practical for holidays and day trips.

An interactive soft toy also adds batteries, sounds, lights and moving elements to the equation. These functions should suit the child’s age and the intended setting – for example, not if you are looking for a quiet companion for the night.

Important Selection Criteria for Soft Toys

Age and small parts

Pay attention to the recommended age group and warning notices. Products with small parts or plastic elements may be unsuitable for children under three. For babies, a soft toy should ideally have no easily detachable decorations, long ribbons or removable accessories. If the product description contains conflicting information, the manufacturer’s safety instructions and the labelling on the packaging take priority.

Materials and build quality

Polyester is used as the outer and filling material in many soft toys. The fibre type is not the only important factor. You should also look for:

  • securely closed seams,
  • firmly attached eyes and appliqués,
  • evenly distributed filling,
  • clear material information,
  • sufficient durability for regular use.

For a soft cuddly toy for babies, the surface should feel pleasant without being excessively fluffy or prone to shedding. For collectors and fans, print quality, embroidered details, faithful character design and stability may be more important.

Size, weight and care

A soft toy measuring between 20 and 35 cm is generally easier to carry and store. Large cuddly toys measuring 90 or 100 cm in height are more suitable for beds, sofas or children’s bedrooms. You should also check the weight: a 695 g soft toy is suited to older children and travel in a different way to a lightweight model weighing around 90 g.

The care instructions should match how the toy will be used. Hand washing may be sensible for delicate character plush figures, while machine-washable models can be less demanding in family life. Electronic versions may only be cleaned in accordance with the relevant manufacturer’s instructions.

Soft Toy FAQs

Which cuddly toy is suitable for babies?

For babies, only consider products whose age recommendation is explicitly suitable and whose safety information does not mention unsuitable small parts. A lightweight comforter may be more practical for everyday use than a figure with plastic parts, accessories or long ribbons. When using one in a sleeping area, parents should follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.

How long does a soft toy last?

Its lifespan depends on the stitching, filling, material, intensity of use and care. Regularly checking for loose seams, damaged eyes or escaping filling is advisable. Only wash a soft toy according to the stated care instructions and allow it to dry completely before using it again.

How much does it cost to run an interactive soft toy?

The ongoing costs mainly come from the batteries. Depending on how often it is used and the range of functions, an interactive soft toy with two or three AAA or AA batteries will need replacements regularly. A soft toy without batteries has no such running costs, but it will not offer lights, music or sound functions.
