Choosing solar lights for your garden: what to consider when it comes to light, batteries and IP ratings

Solar lights offer a cordless way to illuminate paths, flower beds, lawns, patios and driveways. But choosing the right ones involves more than just picking a design. What matters is how and where you plan to use them: how much sunlight will reach the solar panel? Will the light be decorative or help you find your way? And is its stated IP rating suitable for the location?

Common pitfalls when buying solar garden lights

1. Stated lighting time without realistic conditions

Manufacturers’ stated running times usually assume plenty of sunlight and a fully charged battery. In autumn and winter in the UK, on cloudy days or in a shaded spot, the lights may not stay on for as long. A claim such as “8–12 hours” should therefore be treated as a guide, not a guarantee of how long the light will last each day.

2. Confusing decorative lighting with practical illumination

Small solar lights with ground spikes and just a few LEDs are often suitable for marking the edges of flower beds or paths. However, they won’t necessarily replace bright solar path lights for a driveway or steps. If you need lighting to help you find your way or improve safety, check the light output, positioning and beam angle, where this information is available.

3. Making broad assumptions about IP ratings and materials

The term “weatherproof” doesn’t always explain what conditions a product can actually withstand. The IP rating gives you a more specific indication. For example, IP44 means protection against solid objects larger than 1 millimetre and splashing water from any direction. An IP44-rated product should not be left standing in water or exposed to a strong jet of water for long periods.

Technical details to check before you buy

Solar panel, battery and charging conditions

A solar panel needs a spot that gets as much direct sunlight as possible. Trees, house walls and dense hedges can reduce its charging performance. Check that the top of the light will receive enough daylight throughout the day. Depending on the version, the Aigostar models in this selection use amorphous or polycrystalline silicon solar panels.

The battery type matters too. The models listed here use NiMH batteries, or a lithium battery in the smart version. Check the capacity, charging time and running time together. According to the product description, a charging time of around 4–6 hours and a stated lighting time of 8–12 hours apply under suitable charging conditions.

Light colour: warm white, cool white or RGB

Warm-white solar lights at around 2700 Kelvin create a soft, yellowish glow, making them a good fit for seating areas, patios and decorative lighting in flower beds. Cool white light at 6500 Kelvin looks much more neutral to bluish and can work well for visible path markers.

RGB solar lights cycle through different colours. They’re mainly for decoration, so don’t assume they’ll provide practical outdoor lighting. If you want a choice of colours as well as adjustable white colour temperature, consider smart models with RGB+CCT technology.

Installation, dimensions and IP rating

Solar garden lights with ground spikes can be pushed into soft soil or lawns without needing a mains connection. This type of installation is less suitable for hard ground. Check the height and footprint too, so the light won’t get in the way on paths or be damaged when you mow the lawn.

For outdoor lights, it’s important to check the IP rating and temperature range. According to the product descriptions, the Aigostar models featured here with an IP44 rating are designed for outdoor use and an operating range of around -10 °C to 50 °C. The smart light is listed as IP54 or IP44. As with other models, don’t submerge it, and keep the solar panel free of dirt.

Frequently asked questions about solar garden lights

How long do solar garden lights stay on?

Running time depends on sunlight, charge level, battery capacity and temperature. Several of the models listed here are stated to provide around 8–12 hours of light under suitable conditions. In winter, or after several consecutive dull days, the lights may not stay on for as long.

Can solar lights be left outside in winter?

It depends on the product specifications. Models with a stated operating range of -10 °C to 50 °C can be used within that range. However, you should still avoid snow, ice, standing water and heavy soiling. If the light won’t be used for a long time, storing it somewhere dry may be a good idea, if the manufacturer recommends this.

Do solar lights use electricity from the mains?

Solar lights charge their batteries using an integrated solar panel and don’t need a mains connection during normal use. However, the energy they generate depends on daylight and location. If you need reliable lighting for entrances or steps, take extra care to check the light output, sensors and positioning.
