Solar garden lights provide decorative and practical lighting without a permanent mains connection. They’re suitable for paths, flower beds, lawns, driveways and patios. However, garden solar lights can vary considerably in light colour, IP rating, battery and installation.
If you focus only on design or the stated operating time, you could miss important details. For example, a solar garden light may not charge properly if it’s placed in the wrong location. An RGB solar ground light won’t necessarily provide even lighting along a path. And a low IP rating may not be suitable for every exposed outdoor area.
Manufacturer claims such as ‘8–12 hours’ generally apply under suitable charging conditions. Shade from buildings, trees or hedges, short winter days and dirty solar panels all reduce the energy available. So it’s not just the battery capacity that matters: the panel’s position and the amount of sunlight it gets each day are important too.
Check the IP rating before you buy. IP44 protects against solid objects 1 mm or larger, as well as splashing water from various directions. This is sufficient for many sheltered areas, but it doesn’t mean the light can be left standing in water or submerged. IP65 offers greater protection against dust and water jets, making it a better choice for more exposed outdoor areas.
A warm white solar light at around 2700 K creates a softer glow for patios, flower beds or entrances. A cool white solar garden light at 6500 K looks much crisper and can work well for paths or clearly defined edges. An RGB solar light, on the other hand, is mainly for decorative effect. For consistent visibility along longer paths, the colour, light distribution and spacing between lights matter more than an RGB function alone.
Check whether the product emits warm white, cool white or RGB+warm white light. The Aigostar Smart Solar Floor Lamp, for example, combines RGB, warm white and daylight white, with a stated colour temperature range of 2700 K to 6500 K. Its stated light output is 350 lm.
Smaller solar ground lights, by contrast, are usually designed for decorative effect. The Aigostar lights with RGB or 2700 K are rated at 0,006 W, so they’re better suited to accent lighting for flower beds, lawns and paths than to lighting a large area.
For weather-resistant outdoor lighting, the IP rating and operating range are key. Several of the Aigostar models listed here have an IP44 rating and a stated temperature range of -10 °C to 50 °C. The Smart Solar Floor Lamp has an IP65 rating.
Even with an IP rating, the product shouldn’t be left standing in water. Also check the casing and contacts regularly for signs of moisture, dirt or corrosion.
A solar garden light with a ground spike should be placed in soil that’s soft but firm. The panel should be positioned facing upwards, with as little shade as possible. The Aigostar RGB models state a charging time of 4–6 hours and an operating time of 8–12 hours under suitable conditions. According to the product details, the Smart Solar Floor Lamp has an 8,000-mAh lithium battery and a maximum operating time of up to 24 hours.

It depends on the model and the amount of sunlight. Several Aigostar lights have a stated charging time of around 4–6 hours. Before using one for the first time, make sure the panel is fully exposed to direct daylight.
Yes, as long as you stay within the temperature range stated by the manufacturer. In winter, shorter days, the lower position of the sun and frequent cloud cover can reduce operating time. A clean panel placed out of the shade will help it charge more effectively.
No. Solar models charge their batteries using the integrated panel and don’t normally need a mains connection. They don’t add to your household electricity costs, although you may need replacement batteries or new lights over time. When replacing a battery, check the specified battery type, and dispose of batteries and electrical equipment in accordance with local regulations.
